But the problem is that ignoring one of the largest chunks of their personal identity is not going to help you understand them as people, individuals, or a whole. That may be good ideally, but for now you're just crippling your own ability to understand the world as it is.

Maybe most people here don't see the issue the way I do, maybe they do see it as a race thing and need to expand their perspective. I'd argue you need to expand yours as well to include the very real effects that race and other demographic divisions have on people, their lives, their perspectives, and who they are. Otherwise you'll never understand their actions and decisions.
