yeah it sucked hard. pisses me off how so many people think dying you're hair, wearing stupid clothes and calling people posers is how to be punk. punk is a state of mind and not dressing like a tool and looking down on people because theyve never listened to every dead kennedys b side ever put out

you know at the end of the movie he realizes that he was just another "poser" like the ones he made fun of. its not a movie about the "rules of how to be a punk" its more or less showing the futility in the whole "you're a poser, NO you're a poser" argument. everyones going to die, no matter what you're label is.
the final line is even him saying, "I guess when all was said and done, I was nothing more than a God-damned, trendy-ass poser."

you make an excellent point, i never really looked at it that way, my main issue of the film was more the fact that there was no (at least by my recollection) representation of what i feel a real punk is, e.g. a henry rollins type who believes in the ideals and D.I.Y ethics of punk but doesnt need to wear the clothes etc. the overlying message of the film seemed to me to be 'punks are teens who do stupid shit but will eventually realise the folly of their ways and will assimilate into the general population.

i can definitely see what you mean. they do focus more on "how to act punk" than the ideals behind the actual music. hell they only actually go to one show in the movie. if they could make a movie about a little punk band rising from nothing and the troubles of actually doing it DIY, and make it interesting, i would watch the hell out of that.
to the effect of the last line of your comment i hate to refer to the last line of the movie again, ill post a link to it since its kinda long . its the second pargraph long one: www.imdb.com/title/tt0133189/quotes
while he does assimilate into the system, he tries to justify it as doing it to reach his own ends. tries to justify is the key there. is he going to wreck it from the inside? or is he just going to keep his head down, reproduce, rinse, repeat? i feel at the end that is the crossroads he is at. i think the message is instead of dying your hair and clothes crazy colors and taking to the streets to separate yourself from "the system" you merge into it so the change you want is being presented by a reasonable adult and not some blue-haired hooligan.

yeah that would be awesome, quite surprising really that given the lack of originality in cinema these days no one has (at least to my knowledge) really attempted to explore the topic of D.I.Y punk in a cinematic way, because theres a lot that could be done there.
yeah i see what you mean, i guess the fact that he self identifies as a poser shows that the film was never truly about punk to begin with but more the evolution of the characters. i never really looked at it from that stance but now that you mention it the message definitely rings true, ive always thought of punk as holding certain ideals while simultaneously not letting those ideals control you e.g. you can be anti establishment ( a phrase i really hate but i'll use it to illustrate a point) but youll do more good fighting from within the establishment than from the outside.
