The poop problem is probably only a problem due to the selective breeding though. Evolving to where you can literally shit yourself to death due to your own hair doesnt sound like something that would happen naturally.

These are animals that can die from rolling on to their backs, they're flat so they can't gain enough momentum to roll themselves back over, so yes it is quite possible for them, in short, to "shit themselves to death" haha.

Wait, isn't that more to do with the fact that they have been selectively bred to produce more wool than they would naturally need? You make it sound as if humanity is doing them a favour.

Admittedly, there isn't much of an alternative to it, if it were to be nearly as efficient as current methods of obtaining wool. That's not really what I'm getting at. It was just your turn of phrase that was interesting.

IIRC the sheep or its direct ancestor anyway was going extinct before we domesticated them, from predators mostly. So they may not exist today if it weren't for our intervention.

Whether they have been selectively bred or not poop still gets stuck to the wool at the rear end which if not shorn actually tears the skin due to the weight, which further leads to maggot infestation. I know what I'm talking about I'm a shearer...

Perhaps they have been selectively bred by humanity to suit our purposes, and we'll save the morality discussion on that until later, but the current population of sheep exist as they are and it is our responsibility to properly care for them.

They have been bred to produce more wool now than they used to, however traditionally sheep would still often be found exhausted or dead when they have their full coats still in the summer. Or they would be found injured and bleeding because they would violently rub their bodies against trees or fences and things in order to scratch their coat off.
So yes they do produce more now, but even when they didn't their wool does need to be removed
