of course you can, it's like Tazdingo said
your body always chooses to burn what is needed to keep your organs running
my body burns 1400-1600cals a day if I just sit down and do nothing, it's the base amount that my body need to function correctly. So basically I need more than 2000cals if I burn 300 a day, I'll get fatter but I also get more muscle, that's what bulking is.
if I go below 1500 I start feeling slow after a few weeks and it pretty much defeats the purpose of working out since you do it to get healthier
eat until you get full, keep the candy down
work out and don't break the habit once you get it also rest a lot
never do GOMAD (Gallon Of Milk A Day, it's what they preach at /fit/.. unless you juice and work out constantly and breathe muscle tissue you will get obese, scratch that: you'll get fat either way)
It's really not that hard, unless you have an obese way of eating and eat like 4000+ cals a day
don't cut down on fat, cut down on carbs
because the body burns what you have a surplus of, so eating less fat is counterproductive while eating less carbs helps your body burn the fat faster
if you notice that you gain weight(jnot the good kind) you should take a glance over what you've been eating lately and cut down on the obvious bad stuff

When your body starts running low on amino-acids which are needed to replace tissue in your organs, it starts disassembling the muscles it built in order to keep your vital organs running. If you continue with the diet, the body tries to save itself from starvation by going into what you might call an energy saving mode where it slows down the metabolism in order to conserve the fat for as long as possible, since it doesn't know how long you might go on without an adequate amount of food.
This happens whenever you have a large calorie deficit.

Starvation mode is usually largely a non-factor in diets, and if you're overweight you're not going to hit it on 1400 calories a day.
