While it may be true that a mandatory service may diminish the quality of an army, most people that served with me back when Germany had mandatory service learned to enjoy it pretty quickly. Of course, there´s always the handful of guys that just isn´t cut out for it, but they leave for civic duty pretty quickly.
I´m in favour of mandatory service because of that. Everyone does their duty, and the ones that think themselves too pretty to get dirty are put into the retirement homes and hospitals of the country, where even the most entitled little shit does an invaluable job to society.
Now that the Bundeswehr is conscription only, we have so few enlistments that many bases are scheduled to be closed or leased to civilian companies - because there are no soldiers to fill them.
But seeing that 80% (citation needed) of our equipment is fucking broken and useless anyway, that is strangely fitting.

Oh, no I completely agree. There are many good things about drafting people but many bad things as well, such as weakening the force like you said. But hey, I wish you the best of luck either way. I'm sure it will be an interesting journey.

Thinking about that just brightened my day... What country do you live in, by the way?

I'm in America As you probably could have guessed by my name, profile, and that picture... so service isn't mandatory. Right now I'm just a humble America loving poolee in the Corps, though. But my family has many Marines, airmen and soldiers.

I'm Greek, living in the UK for university but I've got to go back at some point before 2022 and serve. One of the good things about mandatory army service IMO is that it puts people like that in their place and gives them a strong dose of reality... although it does reduce the quality of the army if half the people don't want to be there I guess. Either way I might not even be placed in a physically demanding unit, depends on if my asthma gets worse or not

I get ~10 mentions a day just from the copy/paste alone, and then sometimes a few others that are actually about the Marine Corps. Some of the shit I've seen though, I'll tell you what... So many 14 year old kids saying shit like "Yeah, I haven't decided if I'm joining the Navy SEALs or the Marines yet." It's so terrible. I can't help but put them in their place every time. You don't just go and "join" the SEALs anyway, they aren't a branch. Saying that you're joining the Navy would be plenty but that doesn't sound flashy enough for these cunts.
User avatar #20 - nid (01/23/2015) [-]
Well as someone who lives in a country where army service is mandatory (9 months), the only thing I'm looking forward to for when I serve is seeing the 18 year old equivalents to those kids during the first week of boot camp. I imagine pride covered in mud and cries for Mommy.

Gorilla warfare, Al-Quaeda, bragging about confirmed kills, that copy/paste is full of cliches. That's what makes it funny, though.
