The guy's a douche for holding that kind of demonstration in front of a school, but unless there is a rule forbidding public demonstrations in the area (in which case police can be summoned to move him along) there is no reason to escalate things.

You don't know he's doing it to harm the children - there's no reason to believe his being a tool will harm any children - but even if it did, the appropriate response isn't to beat the guy for speaking an unpopular opinion.

And if you're so concerned that a kid might be traumatized by seeing a guy talking; how can you have no concern for the kids seeing someone beaten up for talking? What's the worse lesson: "Some people have terrible opinions" or "it's ok to assault people who disagree with me?" "Some people express themselves in hurtful and thoughtless ways" or "if i say something unpopular I might just get smashed in the face with a bat?"

I'm saying it's wrong to assault this guy even if what he says is absolute shit - which I believe it is. And harm done to these kids and our society by this creep is far less than what is done by bat wielding assailants who silence people for saying things they don't like.

You are completely right and i agree with you 100%. For the record i did say that i believed that "the person that hit him is just as bad if not worse than the guy". Im not saying that it was right for the girl to hit the guy. However i am saying he deserved punishment for his actions just like the girl deserved jail time for her actions. Hypothetically if what the girl did was not against the law for some reason she would deserve some form of punishment. What the dude did was morally wrong and, in my opinion, he deserved to be punished (regardless of by what means or by whom/ whom it may affect as long as its an equal punishment). lets just agree to disagree man, it pretty much comes down to just raw opinions at this point haha.

Maybe you want to take that back to tumblr. If the children are traumatized from someone with a differing opinions, they should be counseled and given a reason to understand why he's wrong. Teaching them to violently lash out at people who say things they don't like isn't defending them. It isn't helping them. It's scarring them for life.

If you want to maintain a civilized society, you can't beat people for holding a minority view or even being vocal about it. Even in an uncivil society, like where rape is acceptable, the only hope for recourse would have to come for toleration of minority voices.

Im unclear as to what you are arguing at this point. My opinion is that the guy deserved to be hit. I agree its uncivilized to hit people of course and i would argue its uncivilized to hold signs like that in from of facilities that are meant to educate young minds, not only is it extremely detracting to those students, it also has no place in from of kids who have no power in the first place, the kids have no power to change anything and protests like this belong elsewhere. I would also say that the person that hit him is just as bad if not worse than the guy. Once again these types of voices have no place in and outside of schools and he is clearly doing it to psychologically harm the students and to gain publicity. And dude, common, irrelevant personal attacks like "that that back to tumblr" dont help you here.

Even if he was, we're a civilized people. Is it really to much to ask that we respect someone's right to say what they believe, even if we deeply disagree?

If the shoe was on the other foot and he was defending rape victims in a society that accepted it as normal, would you really want him hit with a bat because every there thought he was being an ass?

and of course the dude has a right to hold a sign like that, no question. But he better be ready to get some backlash for it.

what he is doing is (potentially) physiologically damaging toward his targets and hes doing it to be an ass. If you are willing to harm other people to prove your own point, youve got whats coming to you as long as its equal. One could argue they chick that hit the dude with the bat was working to defend the children from harm, thus making her civilized. Mental damage can (arguably) be just as great as physical damage in some respects. so ye homeboy deserved to get hit, he should expect it dishing out that kind of "attack". And in no civilized society would it be permissible to allow rape, so no someone defending rape victims would not deserve to be hit.
