No, a jrpg is not an rpg.

It has some similarities, but it's very restrictive and focused on narrative, neglecting gameplay, like the interactive erotic novels it evolved from.
In my opinion, jrpgs should still be called "interactive novels" because that's what they are, really.
Weeaboos don't like to hear it, but it's true.

I think he meant it's not a Western RPG.

Still don't see why he's complaining.
#141 - mralice (06/25/2014) [-]
I know what he meant... I just found it odd, when the screencap I posted is clearly not a modern western-style RPG O_o ((I know the picture is small as piss. The game was made for Windows 3.1 at 640x480 resolution, so screenshots are of that resolution. But its still obvious I dont mean something like Skyrim, Fable, or Dark Souls.))
User avatar #144 - norkas (06/25/2014) [-]
Ah well.

Anyway, tell me more about Golden Sun. I've heard a little bit about it.

Think.... old school Final Fantasy, but still not as out-dated 10 years later lol.

To try to explain the plot would be ruinous, because the plot is what makes the game so good for its time. Its not too complicated, but not stupidly simple. There are side-quests, but not so many as to be a chore. You actually WANT to do them, and the optional bosses pose a threat worth tackling.

Its the old-school turn-based combat with the typical 4-character set-up. Theres magic, melee, summons, the usual. But... its done well.

The best I can say is: Try it. The first game is good. Downloading the game and an emulator is way too easy.

If you like the first, youll like the second, even tho it wasnt AS good (personal opinion) as the first (although the puzzles are alot harder and the optional bosses are WAY better).

As for the 3rd game, I havent looked into it to be honest. I didnt even know a 3rd game was made until months ago, and havent had the time to seek an emulator for it.

Its one of those games that I would play in my deathbed just for the nostalgia.

I'll give it a go. Never been one for Eastern RPGs, but hey. Trying new things is awesome.

If you can get through the HORRID Djinn tutorial in Golden Sun 1, youll be fine.

I swear it takes like 20minutes of smashing (A) to get through.... and then in the end, (A) is "Repeat everything again please" and you'll be pissed at yourself for hitting it on accident.

10 years later, and I STILL remember accidentally hitting (A): Repeat..... twice....

Well if emulated games aren't out of the question, I suppose I'll list my favorites from a few series:

Final Fantasy VI
Dragon Quest IV and V (and VIII if you can run PS2)
Chrono Trigger
Fire Emblem 4, 7, and 8 (more of a strategy-RPG hybrid)
Megaman Battle Network

as far as western RPG's go, most of them aren't turn-based:
The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind
Mass Effect (shooter-RPG hybrid)
Dragon Age (kind of like a single player MMO style combat)
Fallout New Vegas

Probably missing a bunch but this is a pretty ok list I guess

I would recommend "Heroine's quest" or the "Quest for Glory" series (you can get "Quest for glory 2 for free online). They are nothing like Golden Sun or Exile, but the are amazing and quite unique since they are PAC RPGs
User avatar #139 - mralice (06/25/2014) [-]
I dont like how QoG looks... FAR too many bright colors. But "Heroine's quest" looks exactly like something I'd be interested in! Thank you very much for the recommendation. Downloading it from Steam now :3

What is this... a PTSA Mom meeting where we make our decisions based upon 'feels'?

Damned if you do?
Our Leaders invaded Afghanistan for 1) Military foothold near(ish) to Russia, Iran, 2) Control of the Poppy Fields - our troops come back with stories about openly protecting the Poppy Farms and Opium Trade, and the CIA has a dark history of Drug-Running for Operations Money - and 3) Its multi-Trillion-dollar deposits of Rare-Earth Metals and Gold.

And we keep paying our taxes to support this nonsense... it's insane.

Damned if you Don't?
Nevermind the fact that Victoria Nuland was caught red-handed discussing the overthrow of the Ukranian Gov't (see links below). The government that we set up in Ukraine are our puppets - their 'request for help' isn't legitimate - it's basically international media theater.

www.google.com/#q=Victoria+Nuland
www.zerohedge.com/news/2014-02-06/fuck-eu-us-state-department-blasts-europe-revealed-alleged-mastermind-behind-ukraine

People are hating U.S. 'intervention' for a reason - because it is actually Aggressive-Conquest-In-All-But-Name!

When people (myself included) verbally berate 'The U.S.', I'm attacking 1) Our evil Officials and 2) the fools who fund them with taxes and unthinking support... I'm not berating the Founding Principles of America, the Spirit of its people, or the good that it has done in the past.
