Thank you, now I understand better.

As for your situation, the root of it is the subconcious. I think it's clear that at times of great emotional stress you feel the urge to hurt yourself. If you don't dig out the reasons why you do this and keep repressing it, one day it's just gonna *pop* and all of it will come to the surface and then you might actually end up really doing some damage to yourself.

Here's a video to help you undestand what I mean and most importantly, methods to bring to the conscious mind the programs or beliefs of the subconscious mind.
Basically, how to heal yourself.
I think it might sound a little "new age-y" at first but the concept of "the shadow" comes from Carl Jung, a psychiatrist. If you watch the whole video it'll become clear that you can apply it to your life and when you actually do it, you'll have an amazing reconnection experience, with yourself. (Those kinds of words are thrown around a lot in today's world but I do mean every part of them).

So, good luck, I hope you do check it or do something else that helps you and I hope you decide to have fun with the rest of your trip on earth.

So it's an impulse? it's not about it helping with the emotional pain?
User avatar #113 - mourningspawn (06/24/2013) [-]
Alright I'll explain. So I dont know about other people, but for me, yes its an impulse. I don't know why exactly, but i figure its because I am a very passive person and the few times i have done it, I might have felt like i was making it up to whoever I hurt, or redeeming myself for whatever I'd done, even if I was the victim. Now I tried cutting a couple times to see if it would be anymore help and it wasn't, I couldn't cut deep enough to bleed. But i have scrached myself with pins to the point of scarring but only a little blood. That scar is finally disappearing after years, it was so shameful to like to my mother about it when she noticed, she knew what i had done though. I made some promises to a few people i car about that i wouldn't hurt myself like that again but i stil get those impulses once in a while. Here's an example, (story time)

I've been depressed for quite a long time and I recently went through a breakup. It was a mutual decision to break up so it wasn't too bad but I still missed him and all that jazz.. Long story short, we had some issues and I freaked out for some reason and had an episode. I was in tears and rocking back and forth on my bed just staring into space like a manic. Something set me way over the edge and I started trying to scratch my own face (no idea why still). I bite my nails, so i didn't have anything to scratch myself with, you couldn't imagine the frustration. But I couldn't use anything to help me because I promised I wouldn't. I felt like a psycho but i couldn't stop. Looking back on it im fucking glad i didn't grab anything (at least I don't remember grabbing anything) because the scars would still be there now, and it would have made the situation much worse.

So to conclude, yes, for me, it is an impulse. But grabbing a blade is not. I think cutting is just something we all know about and is a resort for a lot of people when they're feeling like hurting themselves. Everyone has their own reason i guess

I always feel conflicted x.x I've always wished I could draw like a pro, but on the other hand being 'techy' has its perks as well I always know how programs work. doesn't really matter what I'm using. if it's electronic, I can find my way in it

Me too! Ive really wanted to get into programming but realism drawing and programming both take up so much time. I figured id learn to program when im older and have more time where im actually motivated
User avatar #29 to #28 - aherorising ONLINE (10/06/2013) [-]
well, to tell you the truth. everything gets harder as you get older. when you're young, your brain is still developing, and makes connections much faster than when you're older. Therefore whatever you practise doing while you're young, you'll be double as good as when you're older. it's as if your exp gain in skills is tripled or something :p
User avatar #30 to #29 - mourningspawn ONLINE (10/06/2013) [-]
damn. well i dont really see programming going anywhere for me, i really just like disecting and changing stuff so i guess its good im focusing on art, might go somewhere with it
User avatar #31 to #30 - aherorising ONLINE (10/06/2013) [-]
the point I was trying to make is that you gotta do things while you're young. and I have to warn you that the artist world is really, really competitive. seeing as there are so many artists these days, even the most brilliant ones do not get paid that much. perhaps the top 0.0001% makes a good pay. but it'd be worthwhile to try to develop interests in other areas as well. perhaps you could try mixing both? giving photoshop or 3-d modelling a try. any skill you can set on your resume will be a little bit extra right?
User avatar #32 to #31 - mourningspawn ONLINE (10/06/2013) [-]
Oh yeah, i was thinking about digital or concept art for gaming or movies or something. I dont really have much of a plan. I do have alot of hobbies though, but drawing is just what im pretty good at. Im a musician too (pretty much everything everyone wants to be growing up) and im good at acting, and makeup art too so maybe that could go somewhere. I dont know where i want to go, im pretty much just getting good at as much as i can before i get there
User avatar #33 to #32 - aherorising ONLINE (10/06/2013) [-]
that's a really good attitude. I'm pretty good with the piano recently trying to play by ear but then it'd be good to step to the next level with photoshop or something, as long as it's digital art. get yourself out there and see what you can do
pretty funny how you're almost my opposite or something
User avatar #34 to #33 - mourningspawn ONLINE (10/06/2013) [-]
Yeah hahah, but thats a good thing, we could learn a lot from each other. Im taking a digital imaging class for photoshop right now, and ive actually learned some stuff. Im still horrible at it though, photoshop is one of the hardest things to learn in my opinion. So many tools...
User avatar #35 to #34 - aherorising ONLINE (10/06/2013) [-]
hey I'm not saying I'm good at it. I don't even have photoshop :p just saying it's the next thing after manually drawing. I've also heard that many artist benefit from a touchpad to draw with. college's got me pretty much occupied. I'm learning about artificial intelligence, the human mind, cognitive neuroscience, programming (java, PERL, C), and language syntaxis. it can be really difficult at times though >.>
User avatar #36 to #35 - mourningspawn ONLINE (10/06/2013) [-]
Thats really awesome, I'd love to take those classes. Are you going to a university?
User avatar #37 to #36 - aherorising ONLINE (10/06/2013) [-]
haha believe me you don't. especially when you're working on "multiple translangual corpora of up to a million words to analyze the zipfian distribution between 2 languages using egrep in a console on linux". but there are some pretty cool interesting courses. I'm really learning how the human mind works and how people rationalize, learn, develop, grow, and think. and it's pretty neat. but yeah it's univesity, isn't that what college is by default?
User avatar #38 to #37 - mourningspawn ONLINE (10/06/2013) [-]
That sounds pretty heavy. and yeah i have no idea what it college is by default. Ive kind of held off planning for that kinda stuff, i cant even drive yet but people are up my ass about that and college.
User avatar #39 to #38 - aherorising ONLINE (10/06/2013) [-]
lol I can't drive either. don't need to in holland. :p but I gotta tell you, those people are kinda right yknow. from highschool on, it's pretty important what you wanna do and what you wanna go for. we have a niece who didn't really knew, and ended up starting and flunking like 4 or 5 different studies, simply because she never really took the time to think and look what she really liked doing.
User avatar #40 to #39 - mourningspawn ONLINE (10/06/2013) [-]
Yeah, i was thinking about taking a year off when i get out of highschool to figure that stuff out. after all i wont even be 18 when i graduate and here, that means i cant do anything
User avatar #41 to #40 - aherorising ONLINE (10/06/2013) [-]
an excellent choice. I took a gap-year myself as well. but I have to warn you that you really have to push yourself to keep motivated to do stuff. whether it's sporting, drawing, playing an instrument, or learning a new skill. it's just a waste of time doing nothing and looking movies n stuff which I did for some 3 months. there were special conditions
User avatar #42 to #41 - mourningspawn ONLINE (10/06/2013) [-]
WIll do, i dont think i could ever give up playing music or doing art, both are such accomplishing hobbies, if that makes any sense
User avatar #43 to #42 - aherorising ONLINE (10/06/2013) [-]
it does good to hear. just a heads up. lots of people tend to fall into boredom and doing nothing. yet it's really a lot of free time to spend. it'd be good to get a part-time job on the side or something if you can
User avatar #44 to #43 - mourningspawn ONLINE (10/06/2013) [-]
Of course, thank you. im keeping my eyes open for jobs now even, i think im going to stay with one of my cousins over the summer for an internship with something to do with computers. i forgot exactly but it should be cool
User avatar #45 to #44 - aherorising ONLINE (10/06/2013) [-]
that's a pretty good start then may I also suggest w3schools.org? it's a really good website for learning the basics of html, css, javascript, and coding in general. (you can use htmlkit to run them I think) it's basically what I started coding in ^^
