Proudly flying a flag in itself is co-signing whatever violence and injustice is associated with it. Sure it doesn't physically hurt anyone, but it still carries a certain meaning behind it. Even slavery was only a part of it, its still a flag that carries a huge political connotation with it. White people who fly the flag might not fully sympathize with black people who are rightfully offended by it, but we can't just brush it aside as if shits all cool and act like it suddenly doesn't carry any racist meaning.

so what if i have t in my house in memory of my ancestor who never owned slaves but fought for states rights? yes the primary reason for civil war was slavery but it was about the states losing the right to do what they wanted and not let the government tell them how to run their state
#452 - sketchE (06/26/2015) [-]
so should we pull down the US flag for the mei lai massacre? what about nuking japan? should britain pull down their flag that has been about conquering the worldforcing people to be second class citizens in their own country? the confederate flag is like the swastika and the word nigger. the south wasnt sitting there saying let us keep our slaves well kill you so we can torture these people, many of which were worse off after the war. yes they went to war because of slavery but the big picture was the states didnt want you telling them what to do. slaves were given freedom in the south to fight the war and quite a few did
#472 - fukkentyranitar (06/26/2015) [-]
Maybe we should pull down our flags if innocent blood was spilled for them. And I'm pretty sure being free was more important to slaves than being feed garbage and kept in stables with the animals. Please don't insult my intelligence by telling me that black people were given freedom in order to fight for the preservation of slavery. We both know damn well they would have been dragged right back to the plantation had the South won. This is the same era when slaves were hung or burned alive for making eye contact with their slaver masters wife or daughter. Giving a person something they should rightfully have doesn't absolve the oppressor. That's like saying I should thank someone for not hanging me and raping my children in front of me.

People were still sold and traded as livestock and had less than no choice in the matter. That within itself is disgusting. If you support slavery, just say you do. No point in doing this song and dance anymore. There really isn't a grey area for something like that.
#491 - sketchE (06/26/2015) [-]
theres actually a lot of grey area in this. like hey paddy i know your starving so let me bring you over here and oh work for me for years on jobs too dangerous for the slaves i actually paid for. lets not mention the KKK was formed after slavery was over. maybe include the fact people basicly sold themselves back into slavery because they were freed with nothing to their names. im not in support of slavery but saying the confederate flag is a symbol of purely slavery is asinine. slavery would have ended one way or another eventually. and probably in a better way than it was. the whole reason the south lost the war is why they needed slavery ion the first place
only idiots think there is no grey area in any matter. what about the nazi who is legitimately fighting for his country. in this world there are facts and opinions. facts are what happened opinions are what you think of it. facts are the grey and your opinion is black or white
#497 - fukkentyranitar (06/27/2015) [-]
1. I never said that the confederate flag was purely about slavery, but slavery was still a big component too it.
2. Whether slavery was "necessary" or not, its wrong. If you bust your ass working for someone else, you should be compensated and treated properly. Not traded and sold and abused like animals.
3. I'm not an idiot for having a certain opinion. I'd be an idiot to shut down everyone else who debates it. In my opinion, there should not be a grey area for most racial and social issues. You either think mistreating people and supporting those who do is right or you think its wrong.
4. Fighting for your country is one thing. Serving under a megalomaniac drug addict that had a boner for ethnic cleansing is different. The Nazis either already hated other races or were brainwashed into hating other races. No one was innocent or ignorant. Everyone knew exactly what was happening. If you sit and watch innocents get wiped out for no reason and do nothing about it, you may as well be an accomplice. I could give a fuck if you had good intentions. The results speak for themselves.
#504 - sketchE (06/27/2015) [-]
im not sure if i mentioned it to you or someone else but the word nigger is much like many symbols of hate. it came from negus and negro neither of those are bad words. it was twisted into something bad. the confederates as a whole cared more about their states rights. the rich and powerful made it about slavery. the average man probably couldnt care less about owning slaves since he never will
#505 - fukkentyranitar (06/27/2015) [-]
If everyone had money back then, they'd have slaves without question. Starting something out with good intentions doesn't matter when you finish with shitty and disgraceful results. The average man not only stood by as it became about slavery, but they also began to adopt the mentality that blacks should be under white rule. Look at things like crop burnings, lynchings, church burnings and the list goes on and on. Like I said, I don't care about intentions. Show me results. The results of the confederate are still felt today. Getting rid of the flag will help race relations in america. Even if its minor, its better than nothing.
#506 - sketchE (06/27/2015) [-]
the kkk was a sorority of rich white males that became what it is. this isnt something that happened during the confederacy it came after it ended. you cant burn down a black owned church if blacks cant own anything right? i feel that what happened after the war was resentment for losing what they had as well as the bad things that went on. the south was under martial law for a while. so they looked for a scapegoat and they found one. to a slave owner slaves were actually worth something. they didnt hang them and burn them alive. thats like buying an xbox and lighting it on fire you dont do that. and yes thats fucked up but thats how they thought. to a plantation owner after the war they were a reason these soldiers were walking around his land taking half of his crops
#507 - fukkentyranitar (06/27/2015) [-]
Look, whether you like it or not, the Confederate flag represents a fucked up and disgraceful time in America. It should have never been celebrated even if there's no harm meant by it. For many people, the confederate flag is a sign of hatred that has haunted them since they were children and still haunts them to this day. Same thing with the word nigger. Good intentions mean nothing if you only get negative results.
#509 - sketchE (06/27/2015) [-]
why cant we change it? why cant we change the end result take the power away from the hate and make it good? sure we dont have to celebrate it but why cant we just say thats someone whos a proud southerner and that be the end of it. if good things can be turned bad they can be turned just as good. you dont improve race relations by banning things. you dont improve things by saying some people can do things and others cant. you improve race relations by educating people that we are all the same and treating each other like were all the same. demonise the people who do the bad things and not lump everyone who has a few similar charecteristics
#511 - fukkentyranitar (06/27/2015) [-]
If it could be changed, it would have been a long time ago. You can sugar coat a carcass as much as you want, but it will still taste like rotting flesh and blood. We shouldn't have to adapt to something that should have been left in the past already. The problem isn't changing and education. We need to start from scratch and ditch all the old shit. If you can't leave the past behind, you're doomed to repeat it. I'm more than ready to scrap all the bullshit and start fresh for once. Whether you're on board or not, we as human beings are going to move on. Leave all the confederate flags and shit too the old men who are still waiting for the south rise up against the government.
