you would be suprised, if the perks for donating are good you can make loads of money. they best examples are MC "super" servers where you get at least 5 people online all the time with top tier ranks that cost 500 dollars.
infact I have donated myself for some donater perks on mc servers.

And Minecraft actually is trying to put a stop to that. I've big brother admin on a few game servers, and went to a few others for a while. The ones I was big brother admin on went down because no one donated and got bored of the game. Same with a few of the others.

Mojang is stopping servers that lock parts of their game behind pay walls for example "you can use diamond tools unless you donate" as this basically means that the server owner is making money off mojang's work. As for people getting board its up to the admins and mods to create events and to add plugins that keep the players engaged and interested.

what do you mean by hiding anything behind a pay-wall? locking off parts of a game is a paywall. but giving perks like non pvp flying in survival mode, different chat colors or also offering items that people can make normally seems okay with mojangs guidelines mojang.com/2014/06/lets-talk-server-monetisation/
as for the server failing and people getting bored, advertisement is also a major factor, getting new people makes things seem newer.

This probably seems out of place but actually what everyone thinks is the death command (thumb down) was actually the sign to not kill a fallen gladiator. A thumb up was a sign permitting the other gladiator to kill his foe. Also gladiators were more fat and pudgy than muscular because of their high diet in carb heavy vegetables. Everything you know is a lie.

Oh shit I didn't even realize someone already commented that.
