If you draw stuff, go with krita, It's actually legally free and intended for digital drawing. Photoshop, while great, isn't intended as a drawing program. It offers all the tools to use it as such, but it requires some time to tweak it to your liking.
If you do photomanip., dunno' about alternatives or torrents, sorry.
