Our country has been a shit-hole since Christmas, 1913, when the Federal Reserve Bank was created, and everyone just allowed it to happen instead of refusing en-masse.
...Then since 1914 when the U.S. joined with in WW1, to help out the Brits for god-knows-what-reason.
...Then since April 5, 1933, when Pres. Roosevelt signed ExO 6012, and everybody just handed over their gold...
... Then since Pearl Harbor, when we decided to enter WW2 on the side of the Allies, once again getting entangled in a war that should have been constrained to the U.S. and Japan (maybe).
Truman, Johnson, Nixon, Ford, Clinton, Bush Sr, Bush Jr, Obama, and whoever comes after wouldn't have had any of their power if the past four generations would've stood up against the Tyrannical Wilson Regime back in the 1910s.
Our country has been shit for a long time.

technically the surplus was the result of raiding the social security and medicare trusts which is partly the reason why they cannot be sustained today. The national debt never actually went down because of that surplus. However I would agree that the economy was better back then thanks to the explosion of home computers and the internet. Also accounting for inflation, gas prices were the lowest they ever were back then.
