I found the PDF of the paper, it was called "Psychology of killing" by William S. Frisbee Jr. (what a fucking name). It is a bit short but supposedly if you want fully fledged research you are to read "On Killing: The Psychological Cost of Learning to Kill in War and Society" by Dave Grossman. That is what William S. recommends at least. Still, if you don't want to dive into a long book on the subject I recommend the article.

True, but given he's firing a .50, you soon know his exact location. Add range, find good cover then engage. I'm talking as a freshman in college, so I have no idea what it would be like to come under fire, but given he's a tubby bastard with a 56 pound weapon (minimum), I don't know. He seems to be a easy target.
Thank you for your service by the way

The thing is most fire fights last a long time and most of the time we're so far away from each other we're not 100% sure what the fuck we're firing at, during my latest deployment I fired my rifle twice at an enemy and hit something once
in fairness i'm a combat medic in the New Zealand army so I rarely see fighting at all
The thing is locating them without optics or aerial observation is actually relatively difficult
The nightmare situation for me against this guy would be if my squad and I were coming up on a village for a routine health check and this guy and his mates had made themselves at home without us realising it, he could easily pin down the entire squad
But yeah if you knew where he was he'd be easy but if we knew where most of Al Queda and the Taliban was that would have been easy

I think you guys should be interested in a paper I read a while back, I think it was called "The psychology behind killing" or something. It describes how warfare (at least in the old days) were more about intimidation and not really a lot of killing each other then backs it with some degree of research.
User avatar #72 - mikhailovych (10/17/2014) [-]
Yeah I can see that I remember reading once that in many battles during the 100 years war it only required about 10% casualties to cause an army to rout

Terrifying is different than effective.
A CAG operator, Ranger, SAS or a sniper are all you need to take him down.
Plus, a KORD .50 fired from the hip has the accuracy of trying to piss in a urinal, hand free, while jumping and standing 6 feet away. You will hit little to nothing.
User avatar #71 - mikhailovych (10/17/2014) [-]
I know he will hit nothing but there's also the effect on the kind of support you can receive, if you get pinned down by this guy and a few of his buddies close air support is basically a no-go because no heli pilot wants to get near a .50 cal
and yes as I said if you're a special op unit or sniper you could easily take him but that is provided you know he's there, as far as I know ISIS fights much the same way Al Qaeda and the Taliban did while I was over there as in we don't know where the fuck they are until we stumble across them face-first
User avatar #76 - hourlyb (10/17/2014) [-]

Except I think this kinda says that people who enjoy doing that should do that, but we shouldn't shove math and science on kids who don't show interest in it. Essentially we should allow kids to choose what they prioritize in their learning at a younger age than college. I know for a fact I'm never gonna improve the condition of patients with prion based diseases, but maybe, just maybe, my performance on stage will make someone happier. Will bring light into their life, and give them meaning.

But that's probably just me being a pretentious actor.
#92 - xxxsonic fanxxx (10/13/2014) [-]
Holy fuck, imagine if you gave everyone from the grades 9-12 what they want to learn... They don't.

Learning science and mathematics is essential to becoming a contributing factor to human society. Taking an arts/dance/music class is not. In essence, choosing the arts/dance/music over the mathematics/science (most likely because one thinks it is boring and/or difficult or to "follow your dream) is turning your back on the advancement of mankind so you can enjoy yourself.

That's the most selfish thing I could ever imagine.
User avatar #93 - Endofzeeworld (10/13/2014) [-]
So you are saying that everyone should work for the advancement of society and species as a whole, and no one should do things for themselves to live a happy life of their own?

Could you say that in Russian, please?

This is genuinely one of the stupidest thoughts a person can have. Listen, fag:

Since our hairy asses began to walk upright, We had one major goal as men: To make everything within eyesight bend to our will. We broke bones and cut our flesh rending the ground beneath us into something hospitable in an otherwise brutal and unforgiving nightmare. We fought every beast we could find in a quest for dominance, Then, when we stood atop the mound of corpses of every creature that wished to do us harm, we moved on to the most dangerous game; Ourselves. We ******* chased down game until it died of exhaustion. We beat each other to doom-esque gore piles with our goddamn fists.
Then we realized rocks and sticks work better. We had a ******* bronze age. **** your textbook; That guy who found metal wasn't saying "Oh, I could till more soil with this". He was saying "Well **** ! I bet I could cleave way more heads than Ogg over there with this sharp **** ! And we started battling. For almost every ******* ancient city, we had a group of men dedicated to smiting other men. We used that to shape the world into nations, testing themselves against a tide of ever raging war to see who could stand our own lust for ******* death.
Samurai, Vikings, Pirates, Knights. We all knew them as children. Why? We didn't grasp feudalism. We didn't ponder their technological advancement over their foes. We knew they were good at one thing. War. And we wanted to be just. Like. Them.
Parade all you want about one small speck of humanity that did the same dance as our common ancestors, because you're still right, albeit stupid. You don't know if you want to swim in dark water. You don't know if you want to play with spiders. You don't know if you could eat a raw eel, But you and almost every man alive knows hes willing to kill if he needs to. Regardless of who you love, where you come from, what you worship, You're still a goddamn human, And war is your craft
