32 bit windows just means it only uses up to 3gb of available ram.

Just going to expant on "kindofpractical"'s explanation in case you don't understand it: Usually operating systems can sense what they're being used with, so in your case the operating system sees if the computer it's being run on is the one that is leginimately the one that it is registered with. This helps prevent piracy (I think) so that people don't just copy and paste the entire harddrive to have two copies of an OS.

You can probably contact Microsoft and find a way to get through this, because you're doing it through legitimate means. I had to replace the motherboard of my computer (which is usually what the OS is locked to) and I managed to activate my version of Windows through their customer service.

Most likely the operating system in hardware locked. That being said it shouldn't hurt to try. Why do you want to swap them?

right click on my computer, and click on properties. where it says "System type" is it 32 bit or 64 bit?

If it's 32 bit, then the max ram you can use is 4gb in total (video and system ram is combined in that value)

If so I'd be willing to bet your system is 32 bit , the solution is to install a 64 bit version of your operating system
