There's a difference between individuals who belong to the media having a bias, and the media itself having an avowed bias.
I think the issue is that you're thinking of the media as a literal entity
"The Media" is just whatever collection of news reporters/media content creators are present at a given time. It's just a bunch of random companies and personalities who all share the same right to express their views as the rest of us, only, they happen to have a better platform to spread those expressions
They're not tied to any code of honor or rule book that we aren't
Actually the media is allowed to as well, at least in the US. That's why we have FOX and CNN being polar opposites on the political spectrum. You raise a good point though, as the media usually follows the owner's/CEO's bias (Turner CNN/Murdoch FOX). Though it is unusual that newspapers would throw in on such scale one way, it isn't unheard of nor illegal.

I hadn't really thought of that, but the transparency in government thing is a good point. If there were no moles, or whistleblowers, or whatever, there would be no wikileaks, just as the first small example that came to mind for me. The government is supposed to be open with the people about what it's doing, but it's isn't. Not that that's new, that's just regular politics. A big part of why I voted for Trump was because he's not a politician, and I thought that with all the money and power he already has that maybe he would just be straight up. I've still got hope, but it's a little more banged up than before.
