I want to go into aerospace engineering just because it sounds cool
#18 - fergin (06/17/2015) [-]
Everyone and their grandma are becoming engineers, there's too many people doing it just because it pays good. The best degree are ones that are in demand, pay well, and aren't being over populated.
User avatar #70 - Sethorein (06/18/2015) [-]
>everyone becoming engineers

Yeah, everyone is starting engineering and dropping out. The brutality of the undergrad experience weeds out most of the students.

It's one of few degrees I'd say still provides pretty high graduate employment.
User avatar #51 - dreygur (06/17/2015) [-]
Thing is, even though the quantity of engineers is huge, the demand is even bigger. And as securityexplain said, there are different kinds of engineers.
User avatar #32 - securityexplain (06/17/2015) [-]
Bullshit. Engineers of all sorts are regularly the most needed profession there is for last several decades, and that need is only growing.

Not to mention that term "engineer" means fuck-all, considering how many different areas have engineers in them. A medical engineer? Software? Architectural? Completely different things which you simply can't group together when it comes down to talking about job market.

Just because you are basing your opinions based on your own anecdotes from what you saw in your immediate vicinity and internet doesn't mean you're even remotely correct.
User avatar #71 - xdiabolicx (06/18/2015) [-]
Pretty sure some garbage men prefer to be called sanitation engineers.
User avatar #53 - cackrel (06/17/2015) [-]
You're explanation was so sexy man.
I'm going into biomedical engineering and I want to make prosthetics.
Thank the lord that I don't need to know how to spell.

Sounds like you guys are a little insecure about your career choice there. You wouldn't need to justify it if you weren't worried about it yourself. but whatever man, live your life the way you want. Good luck.

SCIENCE =/= ENG

I'm a science student and becoming awkwardly aware of how useless my degree is. But engineering degrees are a different story.

Also: engineers almost never pursue PhD's, their undergraduate degree is more than good enough to be gainfully employed.

pick one nigger.

If you get a degree with the word "Engineer" in it, I can guarantee you will have a job. It is the most stable job in the history of the world, next to doctors, and other such shit (civil jobs)

No matter what society comes to, there will always be engineers, and people will always be hiring them.
User avatar #73 - Sethorein (06/18/2015) [-]
medicine is quickly becoming a problematic sphere for employment. Too many specialists, not enough spots for 'em.
User avatar #36 - securityexplain (06/17/2015) [-]
Nigguh, I ain't even engineer.

As far as that link goes, its showing data for US only. And I'd rather not get in argument about US academics, as I don't have particular amount of kind words to say about their school/university system.

Do note that that data would be vastly different in rest of the world.
#65 - adriaan (06/17/2015) [-]
there is a saturation in academic jobs, but thats about it. the article doesnt talk about any commercial jobs. there are plenty of high tech jobs there . even than a lot of other sector want engineers as well.
#37 - fergin (06/17/2015) [-]
Yeah the US school system is shit, wouldn't mind having been born in a different country.

Just because so many people on FJ are Engineers or will be Engineers doesn't mean there are too many of them.

#24 - fergin (06/17/2015) [-]
Im not saying you wont be able to get a job because there's so many, you'll just have a little competition. At least in my state.
User avatar #25 - granate (06/17/2015) [-]
Well, hardly anyone I know IRL(Hah, I don't even know that many people) are related to Engineering.

True, some places in the world might have quite a few applicants, but what is an overcrowded University compared to more than 7 billion people in the world?
User avatar #20 - meatloafman (06/17/2015) [-]
engineering. Overcrowded. choose one
At least in the UK there is a crippling lack of engineers coming out of our universities.
#22 - fergin (06/17/2015) [-]
