Trust me, I've seen some pretty bad ones. You should be in shape if you're going to be cosplaying a character as notoriously muscular as a saiyan, but you don't have to be super-jacked to pull it off right. Plus if you make the clothes right they actually make you appear more muscular. The right tailoring job will make anyone look better.

When you live farther north the sun doesn't cut through the center of the sky as much as it just kinda hops over the horizon for a few hours.
The sun probably rises and sets on the same side of the house away from the fence, so the angle the frost melted at is as high as the sun ever got in the sky.
I think I explained that well.. im not sure

there might have been something that cast a shadow big enough for the sun not to get to that part of the fence allowing some of the frost to remain on it

Also as information, not trying to be a dick, your costume is judged almost entirely on the basis of craftsmanship, occasionally how well you fit the role will help judges decide between two costumes for an award, but even if you don't match the character type, if your construction is superior, you'll win.
User avatar #108 - nemecyst (11/18/2014) [-]
"sweeping statemen" "my experience" "usually"

I was not saying this guy himself was a dick, but that people fitting the same profile as him generally follow certain trends.

I've seen some really muscular dudes make some absolutely fenominal costumes, but they usually don't rely solely on showing off their muscle and instead have amazing props, sewing work, and overall craftsmanship.

I'm 6'2" and 160lbs if anything I'm a smidge underweight, but I don't have a problem with people showing off, but what I'm saying is he entered in the wrong competition for that. A cosplay competition is about craftsmanship, not muscle tone. Anyone can buy a costume online.

I can't tell you the number of douchebags who think that because they're even moderately muscular that they can use that to compensate for a sub-par costume.

Furthermore getting in shape is, in my opinion, easier than designing a complex costume. Getting in shape requires dedication, don't get me wrong, but costuming requires extensive knowledge/research on materials, methods, in addition to the time and dedication required to produce a quality product. I'd say an average, middle-tier cosplay costs about $300-$400 and requires around 60-70 hours of work, not including research time, and that's at a journeyman level.

But back to the subject at hand. What I'm trying to say is trying to show off your muscles in a cosplay competition is like yoyo'ing in a martial arts competition, if you can't actually do what the competition is centered around, you just look like an idiot.
#116 - lolsrsslybro (11/18/2014) [-]
you clearly know nothing about bodybuilding if you're going to say costuming is comparatively harder.

60-70 hours of work is nothing compared to the amount of time and dedication body builders put into themselves. $300-400 dollars just about only covers the membership costs at an average commercial gym. not only that but to get prime results diet has to be in the right place meaning you'd put money into foods, supplements etc. i can go on and on about how bodybuilding is a lot harder than 'costuming' could ever be.

not only that but there's a lot of research involved in body building too. it takes a lot more discipline and knowledge than researching what materials look good for a fucking cosplay.
User avatar #121 - nemecyst (11/18/2014) [-]
I'm sorry, when did I say bodybuilding? I said getting in shape.

Let me put it this way, in order to design a sword for one costume I had to learn how to use a jigsaw, scrolling saw, plane tool, and a dremmel. Now if you don't have those tools that can run you quite a bit, even without materials. Now the current material I'm working with runs about $40-$50 per yard if you buy it in bulk and requires careful use of a heat gun as well as knowledge on how to manipulate the material. Furthermore you need to know how different materials work together. There's more to it than that but I'm going to sleep once I'm done with this post.

On top of knowing all this technically it takes hours of practice in order to actually be able to competently perform any of these actions.

Finally: I said getting in shape is easy. Run, do some basic lifting and exercises that a 10 minute google search tells you about and you can get in pretty good shape. Bodybuilding is hard, I know people who do it and their entire life revolves around it, and you know what? Good for them. Costuming and bodybuilding are different types of skills, costuming is art and bodybuilding is sport. With exercise you can do just about any technique right off the bat if you use the right amount of weight/resistance, with costuming you have to master the basics before you can even considering moving on to harder things.

tl;dr Bodybuilding =/= getting in shape, bodybuilding and costuming are too different to compare.
#126 - lolsrsslybro (11/18/2014) [-]
you say you're 6'2 and 160 lbs. it'd take you more than a year in order to pack on the amount of muscle mass to properly cosplay Goku. seriously, it takes a lot more than "getting in shape" to achieve a physique comparable to muscular characters. you would have to put on a good proportionate amount of size in order to do that while at the same time keeping low body fat to stay toned. as such, bodybuilding would have to be the subject for comparison in your original post.

also, learning an exercise is not something you can easily just do right off the bat. people struggle with form all the time which takes extensive training and practice to get right. it can take years to get a proper physique while it'd probably take a couple hours to learn how to use some tools.
User avatar #120 - miklthepikl (11/18/2014) [-]
i'd say its about equal. I'm currently getting in tip top shape for a Pantheon cosplay, but the shield/helmet/armor is looking to take just as much effort as eating right, and hitting the gym every other day.

Although, in this instance, i would agree with nemecyst, this cosplay is more about showing off his ripped body then it is actually crafting the costume. not that theres anything wrong with that, but i wouldn't consider it a good cosplay, just a very convincing body model
#127 - lolsrsslybro (11/18/2014) [-]
i'm not disagreeing with the latter. i just don't like how he's downplaying the amount of time and dedication it takes to obtain a great physique.
User avatar #122 - nemecyst (11/18/2014) [-]
Oh shit, you're the FJ'er who made the red hood costume right? Good job on that.

Will do, I'm Florida based so I do Metrocon Supercon and potentially Megacon this year, trying to get a Ryuko matoi cosplay done before the next con, I'm doing the bladed version and there are going to be over 60 spikes on it that I'm making out of worbla

User avatar #107 - mcmanybucks (11/18/2014) [-]
Maybe he does have that knowledge?`i mean, we're basically forming a personality from this picture..he might be a DBZ fan and actually have made this costume himself..im not too much in on cosplaying but if i was a judge id be judging on how the role was fulfilled, not just the costume..wouldnt look too convinving if the guy was fat as fuck..
User avatar #109 - nemecyst (11/18/2014) [-]

All of the mods listed in the op are compatible. Most mods in general are compatible, and the only place you tend to run into troubles is when you're trying to do stupid shit. You can't flawlessly have a completely overhaul mod like requiem AND a mod that changes combat mechanics. They both do that, and therefor will cause problems. As long as you don't add mods like a dipshit, you shouldn't run into problems.
