Maybe set levels as time periods, so ya' have a natural looking general species progression.

I know right, and you should be able to approve your own evolutions and evolve additional abilities depending on the environment and food; there's a fish that gets poison out of eating jellyfish tentacles; so ''kinda'' like that.
If you'd grow up in a vulcanic environment, the creature'd naturally be more resistant to heat and maybe have a tougher hide from all the minerals in the diet.

I can't come up with many better abilities on such short notice.
