As long as you can respect that and come from a view of understanding. I've watched my aunt and her husband (they're both technically straight) get run out of a church because of it and I remember asking her when I was little why her voice was so deep. Those kinds of things hurt in a way we'll not easily understand. I thank you for this discussion and admire that you didn't resort to insulting me.

You raise a valid point. I'm not saying they're mentally ill. There's at the most basic level, a wiring error where they're body says one thing, but they're brain says another. A lot goes into it and the levels of hormones in the mother's womb makes a difference as well as several other factors. I'm not an expert on the subject. Just a well read student with a transgendered aunt.

Kids by the age of 5 know what gender they are typically. Living as a transgendered individual is difficult and the surgery stresses the body more the older they are. I'm not saying they won't face difficulty, but if everyone told you you were a girl even though you knew you're a boy how would you react. I'm not saying they're innocent, I'm just saying that unless we knew how much they pressured him we can't know anything. For all you and I know, they could have been against it and only because he was so adamant and sent him to counseling and therapy who agreed that it's the best decision that they're allowing it. We're outsiders looking in and we can't know.
User avatar #48 - marmanator (08/29/2013) [-]
I honestly don't even understand this, how is saying i am the other gender (not want to be AM) any different from other mental diseases, im not shunning anyone who feels this way I just don't understand, there has to be something different about their brain that makes them think this way. and im not extending this to gay people, i don't think being gay is a mental illness. But if i said i was truly a penguin instead of a person, and started dressing up as a penguin and getting surgery to make myself look like a penguin wouldn't i be considered insane?

Unfortunately, not unless he changed school districts and moved somewhere else. But he'd most likely still face ridicule for having two mothers, for being a late bloomer, for sharting one time on the school bus. People ridicule each other to feel superior, everyone gets ridiculed for something at some point. I'm not saying he won't have a hard time, but it'd be even harder if he truly does identify as a female and doesn't get the surgery until later in life.
User avatar #42 - marmanator (08/29/2013) [-]
I don't think it would be harder later in life, because most people become more accepting when they're older (notice i say most some people are bigoted assholes) but as children we make fun of anything thats different, and gender swapping is seriously different. Plus what kind of decisions did you make when you were 11? I think the kids brave for coming out like that but when you're young you just repeat whatever your parents tell you, and if they tell you you're a girl then you say i think im a girl, im not saying it's they're fault but they had a huge hand in this kids decision, it was probably all them to be honest.

That's the thing about the hormone treatment, it pushes blocks his puberty from starting so if he backs out before the surgery they stop the therapy and let nature run its course. He might be a late bloomer because of it, but no real harm done.
User avatar #39 - marmanator (08/29/2013) [-]
