It is pretty tough to tell with snakes unless you take them to the vet. Before I knew that Andromeda is a girl I decided her nickname would be Andy so that it is unisex. I met a cool person at my school who is a snake enthusiast who "popped" her. Popping is when you squeeze the uni-hole and it makes the penis pop out if it exists. It was pretty gnarly to see but at least I know her name fits now.

I would be afraid to do those types of things because I might hurt it. Oh god I almost did something to my bird when I first I got him. I decided to give him some grapes the books and online sources said it was fine so I cut them up really small and dropped them in her food bowl but I woke up to see her spazzing out. It scared the shit out of me.

The only thing that went through you head was. "You then fucked up now".

So I when I first got him I asked the store clerk to give me a vet for the bird. They gave me the wrong fucking number which went back to the store and they said "Welp we just sell them we can't help you" I was...really...pissed. I ened up finding up a long time away. In the end though he was fine. I decided to be safe never to him grapes again but still..Boy I was upset.
User avatar #394 - lolerlaura (05/13/2013) [-]
I found that out the hard way about my snake. Any sort of possible resporitory problem is fatal to them and Andy coughed up some mucus on me so I freaked. The place I got her wasn't any help (I found out that any pet store is a bad idea to get snakes as they are over priced and unhealthy) and the nearest vet that treated reptiles was really fucking far away.
#408 - marikochan (05/13/2013) [-]
Wow we literally went through the same thing but with different pets. Pet Stores are douchebags and the only place that can help is like miles away. Everything is so centered on cats and dogs that they forgot about all the other pets. Makes me really pissed at that. And on top of that..they lied to me saying that gave me a number to the vet for my bird when it was really back to their store. I was so pissed at them! And...I'm going to be working there this summer. Can't tell if irony..
User avatar #411 - lolerlaura (05/13/2013) [-]
You gotta do what you gotta do. But I will never buy another animal from one of those stores (except maybe a fish). I think it is extremely irresponsible that they will sell the animals but not have any information on where to get them taken care of.

I also think it is really sad that most employees are terrified of the reptiles. They are seriously neglected in pet store chains. Ball pythons are solitary animals yet you see many jammed into a tiny tank.
#414 - marikochan (05/13/2013) [-]
That's just horrible. The reason I'm applying is because I like all pets and I'm not scared of them. It should be a requirement not to scared of fucking animals if you're going to work at a god damned pet store. Its like..common sense kinda ya know?

You gave me an idea. If I get the job I'm to buy a notepad and keep it on me to give away vet numbers to all the pets there so this won't happen again hopefully while I'm there. Someone has to know what their doing.

There was this snake in my biology class. Everyone did find it of course nasty but it was the nicest snake I ever saw. I mean it came up to the glass whenever I came. It was very friendly. I didn't think they were "Monsters" as everyone labeled them I just thought they would just sit up and chill all day. Like "Hey man I'll just lay up here and stuff. What's going on?"
#418 - lolerlaura (05/13/2013) [-]
That is a wonderful idea! You would save someone some serious heartache and stress if you let them know where to find a good vet.

Sometimes I take Andy on walks to the store I got her at to get her food (people bring their pets in all the time). Once the lady who was supposed to ring me up ran away and I had to wait until they got another cashier because she was so terrified of my snake.
#420 - marikochan (05/13/2013) [-]
But...if your snake was a bad snake she should have known you wouldn't have brought your snake to a store if it was to hurt anyone. Oh god I bet that was hilarious but offensive at the same time. If it was me I would have had the sudden urge to ask to pet it
#421 - lolerlaura (05/13/2013) [-]
I have had several people ask to pet her and I always bring around hand sanitizer so they can. I watched two little kids badger their dad into buying them a ball python after I let them touch her (I told him to look for a breeder instead of the poor bastards in the store).

I thought it was hilarious actually. Out of all the pet snake breeds I would say ball pythons are probably one of the least threatening. Cute little faces and fat little bodies get to me every time
#424 - marikochan (05/13/2013) [-]
Ermagerd man! That looks like the snake in my Freshman class! Kinda...From the side at least

Sideways picture because why the fuck not? I've been wondering what snake it was so I could get my own.
User avatar #426 - lolerlaura (05/13/2013) [-]
My guess based on the eye shape and markings is a corn snake. they are great beginner snakes and are pretty chill as well.
#427 - marikochan (05/13/2013) [-]
I feel derpy. Most of them on Google are orange. Is that a matter of gender for the color?
User avatar #428 - lolerlaura (05/13/2013) [-]
Nope. google corn snake color morphs or just a brown corn snake and you will find some that look similar to the pic you just showed. Orange is just the most common color but they come in tons of colors.

Ball pythons have even more crazy morphs.
#430 - marikochan (05/13/2013) [-]
D'awwwww that's my first snake right there. As soon as I move...This places is a no no to pets but birds and stuff. Oh! I guess he would allow snakes. So...is she nice and silky feeling?
User avatar #431 - lolerlaura (05/13/2013) [-]
Not really silky but they do feel really cool and smooth. Corn snakes can live with each other if the tank is big enough which I think is cool.

Hormones can influence it, but pink is actually neutral. Brown is girl. If it's only going blue-to-pink, it's pretty much a safe bet that it's a male. Trust me, I had a cage of 10 parakeets (well, got up to 20 when they decided to breed, but we would sell the babies to keep it at an even 10.)
#331 - marikochan (05/12/2013) [-]
Thank god I finally know now. Not even the pet store workers couldn't tell me. Welp..I guess I should come up with a unisex name or just male. I had my share of parakeets not as much as you but about 4. Most of them was easy to tell like most of the parakeets I had was male because it was just dark purple all day and everyday. Thanks kind sir. You gave me a world of good just now.

Depending on what kind you get. Ball pythons like Andromeda here get 4-5 (in rare cases 6) feet long on average and will weigh no more than 15 pounds.

Adults can be pulled off your neck by the strength of a 10 year old so unless you are black out drunk, a baby, or asleep they are really no threat to anything but a mouse. (sometimes the mouse is a bigger threat to them)
#282 - marikochan (05/12/2013) [-]
Awesome I might get one soon. For an exchange heres a photo of my parakeet. I have no freaking idea what the gender she / he is for the name...ehhh I'm not sure yet. Her nose determines her gender blue = boy , pink = girl. That nose changes so damn often I don't even know anymore. Like right now its a boy but could be a girl in the next hour or so.
User avatar #388 - lolerlaura (05/13/2013) [-]
