Sounds solid, but I don't know enough about security so I can't really say if it's a good plan or not.

Try to start off small and get rid of gavelkind asap. Focus on your dynasty. Build out your demesne (those buildings count, especially keeps as they add large bonuses to your own levies).
Use your spymaster to scheme where your biggest vassals reside, that way you'll be able to block them from forming or joining factions, cutting those short.

Currently doing a playthrough as the HRE on easy (with pacts disabled). The British isles and factions, Byzantines, and Leon remain on the center. The Fatamids were destroyed in the crusade on Egypt, Seljuk's are the only worthwhile opponent with 37K men at this point.
Except I have 140K.

Basically, safeguard your succession line. Marry of your daughters in a matrimonial marriage. Try to secure a non aggression pact with strong ones near you, an alliance is even better (if they get into a fight, you don't have to pull your troops out to go and help them, just let them fight their battle).

Holding your own demesne is key at the start. Build it out as much as you can, and secure it for your heirs. Don't get powerhungry and grab more than you can chew, that will fuck you up very quickly.

Oh, also retinues. When you get enough manpower for them, MAKE THEM. I have won wars with my retinue alone and never had to mobilize my troops

always keep an eye on the plot thing, if someone is challenging your succession, try to improve your relationship with all the members of the plot or assassinate whoever they are plotting for. like if they want your brother on the throne, and you kill your brother, the plot disappears. but the best way is typcally to raise your relationship with all the members of the plot so they like you the most and then they'll leave and it'll never happen. then youll also have a happy kingdom and thats always good. But when i play as castille, you start off as the heir to Leon and Galicia so i try to assassinate them as soon as possible so i can inherit them, then it's just a matter of building up my forces and land through war. Once you form Hispania, it should be relatively easy to spread through africa and if you get lucky on a crusade you can get some insane land in some places.

I joined in on a crusade and at the last minute i took the lead in it and i managed to basically inherit half of sweden so i was able to spread down from there also. Then i inherited France so i was set up with a lot of land.
My best friend got me into this game and he always made me play a few games so i could fail on my own before he gave me tips to help me through

Sweden should be easy as long as your realm doesn't splinter too much with gavelkind.

Or instead of Ireland start as one of the english minors.
