Auto cars generally take so long to actually accelerate because it usually has to drop into lower gears, and econobox autos aren't exactly quick at shifting(partly to make smooth shifts for commuting) and it has to make sure you're going to continue accelerating so it holds onto the lower gear longer.
Also, what car do you have?
#14 - anonymous (08/02/2014) [-]
1. You have 1 hand on the wheel while shifting instead of 2. No matter how good of a driver you are you're even better with 2 hands on the wheel.
2. Sorry to hear about your ADD.
3. Or... you know... you could drive an automatic and not have to worry about any of that stuff.
4. You're driving a car... how is that not driving? What does it feel like? Tying your fucking shoes? You don't make any sense.
5. It accelerates just fine. You're not a professional racecar driver so i'm sure you'll be fine.

Yes they do and that's why they're better. When you're just trying to slowly move up at a stop light that's about to change or when you're in traffic and need to move forward a bit. Just let go of the break and it'll move forward. It's easier.

But you're using the brake while the car's trying to move forwards that's two opposite things so cant be good surely? :S (i dont know jack about cars) ;p just think automatic is lazy and boring to drive, i like changing gears and using the clutch i feel like im operating the car not just steering haha. plus my left leg gets bored with no clutch...

Not exciting? Oh I see now... you're one of those ADD having GOTTA GO FAST WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!! kinds of people. If you want to have fun then go on a racetrack and race. You're controlling plenty in an automatic.

ADD? probably, but not in the manner you are referring to.
I learned on an automatic, and then I got my car which is a manual transmission and whenever I drive an automatic I do not like the feel. It is slower (not the acceleration, the response time) Everything is handled through the computer, and although the amount of time it takes to switch gears in an auto is not terribly slow, I can feel the differences. When you slam on the gas to accelerate I feel it thinking, processing, deciding, and acting. It isn't you
Sure you tell it what to do because you have control of the pedal, but it is not you.. You are not driving.

It makes the driver's job a lot easier meaning that the driver can focus more on the road rather than shifting gears. Both hands on the wheel is better than 1 hand on the wheel.

In here it's much easier to control a manual car due to ice and snow - also, you don't keep your hand on the gear stick all the time, and I've had to use the hand brake once or twice to keep myself on the road (black ice), so it's not like having your hands glued to the wheel helps in that situation. A manual's also cheaper and easier to fix by yourself if something happens to the gears.
And what comes to the experience of driving, I love shifting gears, just the feeling of it. It's a preference of course - maybe in warmer climates it's easier, but in here I like to have full control to myself.

They're cheaper because nobody buys them. Not many people want a manual. If it cost the same as automatic no one would buy it.

They teach you to have both hands on the wheel for a reason... it's safer.
