He could not - you see, after defeating Morgoth, imprisoning the armies of Numénor and setting the Undying Lands afar from the spheres of the physical earth Eru shaped the earth round at this point and only the "straight road" would lead to aman , the Valar pretty much turned their back on middle earth, only send the Istari with their restrictions. They did not know what exactly was going on and Gandalf himself could not overcome the restrictions by himself - only when he did die and told them what was going on could they be lifted.

I knew who they were at that age, but that was only because my parents liked their music, otherwise I likely wouldn't have known.

Yes, i'm blaming Her because she easily could have searched "Paul McCartney" in Google and known His entire history in 3 Minutes.
It's not like people these days have a database full of all the information they could ever need in their Pocket or anything... right?

quite easily, if it's someone as popular as paul mccartney. and even if they didn't know who he was, they could easily as well look him up and see why kanye west is doing a collab with him

omg! How dare you not know the name of every pharaoh through existence?! It doesn't matter that they are over thousands of years old, you should still know them as they are important and famous people!
Seriously. Fame is not everlasting and even the greatest of artists will be lost in time, never to be heard of again.

User avatar #50 - daniboyi (06/22/2015) [-]
well to be fair. The Beatles are quite old and people can't expect every person from the new generation to know who they are by names.
#54 - jamiemsm (06/22/2015) [-]
well yeah i agree, just wanted to point it out. but i wouldn't hold it against them for not knowing the names of people in bands like beatles or properly queen, since i can't name one of the guys from one direction

its that I EXCPECT THOSE DENSE LITTLE CUNTS TO KNOW WHO THE BEATLES ARE

because regarldes of age or whatever or not they like the beatles music or not that have mean to figute out who Paul McCartney is.. (ie the fucking interent ,mom or dad, a book from the libray)
ignorance is not excusable when you have the means to figure it out
User avatar #40 - europe (06/22/2015) [-]
Why should they know about something they don't care about?

>>#4 It's still dumb as fuck to say, "(Paul McCartney) boutta blow up thanks to Kanye!!!" without a quick Google search. Like, I can understand not knowing who he is immediately. I can understand not liking the Beatles. I can't understand saying dumb as fuck shit like that when their are a plethora of search engines giving you instant access to nearly any information you could want with greater ease than any other time in history.
User avatar #8 - zerpderp (06/22/2015) [-]
my music teacher used to have a whole month dedicated to teaching us about the beatles i fucking hate the beatles now
#4 - John Cena (06/22/2015) [-]
This day in age? Yes. The most hi tech generation can't do a simple Google search wondering what great bands are? I knew who the Beatles were when I was 10 from going through my mom's old records. Then by asking mom who that band was. Kids these days can know a bands entire history in 10 minutes from doing a basic search. So yes, I can blame people for not knowing something older than them. She literally could have typed "Paul McCartney" into Google before doing her tweet. She is seriously that stupid.
User avatar #3 - craaabs (06/22/2015) [-]
"Blame" might not be the right word. Compare the Beatles (and by extension Paul McCartney) A band with undeniable talent which shaped the genre today. Compared to Kanye who frankly is shit at rap but is very motivated to make money and be famous. He succeeds while bands of Beatles caliber go unheard at least in the opinion of those who get angry about some modern music

It's about what happened at the end of The First Age.

Now, there are two kinds of very powerful beings in The Middle-Earth: the Valar (pretty much gods) and the Maiar (lesser gods in the service of the Valar). Among the Maiar there are Gandalf (and all the other wizards), Sauron and the Balrogs.

At the end of The First Age, the Valar (good gods) decided it's finally time to deal with Melkor (Sauron's master) once and for all and they fought him. The battle had such a magnitude that a huge chunk of the world was destroyed. They decided to never use brute force ever again because it's destructive. When Sauron rose to power they sent 5 Maiar which had physical bodies, thus they couldn't use their powers to their full extent. That was in order to stop any other cataclysms.
#41 - awkwardjew (06/21/2015) [-]
As i understand it Balrogs were basically the same race or species or whatever as the Wizards, however had been turned evil by Morgoth. So they'd probably be evenly matched.

don't hold me to this though it's only what I've read online as I'm always interested in lore and shit
User avatar #18 - ljxjlos (06/21/2015) [-]
He could not use all of his powers. As Gandalf the Grey he was sent as an advisor, not to fight the wars of men and elves for them. He was restricted in his powers. Only when he died returning to the Throne of Manwe and telling the Valar of Sarumans Betrayal and Saurons Return, some of his restrictions where lifted.
User avatar #39 - emiyashirou (06/21/2015) [-]
I wonder where OP got this 'fact' from that Gandalf went to Eru after 'dying'.
#43 - John Cena (06/21/2015) [-]
Yeah So Do I. In the silmarillion and the book of lost tales it rather sounds as if he is send to the Aratar, just as Saruman is after his death, and manwe sends him back...
#19 - majkl (06/21/2015) [-]
Yeah but, thats the thing, a Balrog against 12 people can hardly be seen as fighting wars of men and elves for them - unless you mean that he could not overcome the restrictions by himself. I always imagined him like a cat playing with a mouse, but never thought that he might not even be able to choose to use his full power. That would make sense, thanks
User avatar #21 - ljxjlos (06/21/2015) [-]
He could not - you see, after defeating Morgoth, imprisoning the armies of Numénor and setting the Undying Lands afar from the spheres of the physical earth Eru shaped the earth round at this point and only the "straight road" would lead to aman , the Valar pretty much turned their back on middle earth, only send the Istari with their restrictions. #17 - godofhorizons (06/21/2015) [-]
Peter Jackson really didn't like magic. He tried to tone down Gandalf's magical powers in the movie. That's why he's only ever conjuring shields and balls of light and what not. Now whether or not Gandalf the Grey was powerful enough to just wipe away the Balrog, I do not know.
#20 - majkl (06/21/2015) [-]
Thats a shame but understandable. Magic has always been my favourite part in any fantasy genre. I guess I should read the books, hopefully the fight is more epic there - in the movie the fight was a not very believable, I mean all the sword swinging at a 10m tall demon made of fire - Cool but not believable
User avatar #68 - donatelo (06/22/2015) [-]
