I'm not too sure about that. We hold grudges for damn near anything. Look at sports violence. That gets to apocalyptic stages over a game, imagine what would happen if an alien species came and destroyed most of our planet and most of our people. Those few who remained would hold a grudge far greater than we could possibly imagine. I think it's a trait that is solely human, I know that's impossible to say for sure because we have no met alien races but, it feels that way. We hold grudges over the smallest things and against the most impossible odds.

We have little concept of defeatism when it comes to revenge. No matter how damaged we appear, how insurmountable the odds, we always seem to keep on fighting. There is no logic or reason behind it, I think a race superior enough to ours that they could so easily destroy us, would have adopted a level of rationality beyond our comprehension. Thus the concept of revenge would be pointless to them, making us all the more frightening.

You do know how difficult it is to eat that amount of protein just in your regular diet?

That'd be roughly four 4Oz chicken breasts a day for the average person. For someone bigger than that or looking to put on more mass you're looking at above 5 chicken breasts a day, each day. Simply putting in two scoops of your average protein powder can add up to 60 grams of protein so throw in a few handfuls of nuts and you're in the clear.

I've tried it with just dietary intake of protein and it is seriously difficult, expensive and draining.

If you lift weights, and have done so for a while, you don't need much more protein than the average person. A little extra milk or cheese will cover what you need. However, if you're a beginner, or a professional athlete, you need a little extra protein.
But then again, people react differently to things. I just think it's a little ridiculous to see women my age drinking expensive protein powder after half an hour dancing zumba.
User avatar #335 - luthervonappledorf (02/04/2014) [-]
For the average person to gain considerable mass they need to consume roughly their bodyweight in lbs in grams of protein per day. It's a tried and tested formula.

User avatar #175 - studbeefpile (02/03/2014) [-]
You're just wrong.

The more muscle you have, the more protein you need. Muscles are metabolic tissue, they are always active and therefore consuming, even when you're resting. So the more muscle you have, the more food, and protein you'll need. If anything, beginners can get away with eating less protein, but anyone who has been seriously lifting for a year or longer -such as myself- will need an excess of protein, especially when compared to the average person.

By the way, I'm not just some random keyboard warrior, I'm a competitive Powerlifter.
User avatar #206 - drakonpunch (02/03/2014) [-]
Question from a newbie: what happens to excess protein? I've tried to look this up but people have different opinions. They either say it gets stored as fat or that this rarely happens and that it's used mainly for other functions in the body. As you're claiming to be a pro, maybe you got some info and maybe even a source?
User avatar #334 - luthervonappledorf (02/04/2014) [-]
Protein cannot be stored as fat as they are completely different compounds. studbeefpile is correct, you just piss/shit it out. Protein isn't stored by your body in little sacks, it's used directly as needed.
User avatar #235 - studbeefpile (02/03/2014) [-]
You just piss it out.

That's it.

If you eat a lot of carbs and sugar, and don't exercise, then you'll start storing fat, but extra protein wont do that to you.
User avatar #238 - drakonpunch (02/03/2014) [-]
Got any good sources for that info? Because I've read that this is a rare occurence somewhere.
User avatar #266 - studbeefpile (02/03/2014) [-]
Source is experience. I've spent the past 3 years gaining and losing a lot of weight, and now I'm more than well acquainted with what causes weight loss and weight gain.

I actually used a very high protein diet that consisted solely of Meat, Protein Shakes, and cheese, to lose 50lbs. Needless to say I was eating a lot more protein than I needed, but it obviously didn't cause me to gain weight.
#265 - studbeefpile has deleted their comment.
User avatar #178 - highhopes (02/03/2014) [-]
*sigh*
Then you count as a professional athlete. Congrats.
User avatar #179 - studbeefpile (02/03/2014) [-]
I had to eat a lot of protein to get to the point where I could compete.

Even people like my brother, who just lift to be fit have to eat more protein to maintain/build muscle. It's just how it works. 'a little extra milk and cheese' isn't going to cut it for any kind of real gains.
User avatar #193 - highhopes (02/03/2014) [-]
That's because you had an extraordinary goal. You're not like most people at the gym. If you are building muscles, you need some extra protein (although I can say that a lot of people consume way too much). If you are done building your muscles, and are happy with what you've got and want to maintain what you've achieved, you don't need it because your body has gotten used to the impact.

The "worst thing" you can do is to not consume enough protein, I'll give you that. But normal people with normal goals, don't need protein powder. Most of it just ends up in the toilet. And that's a pretty expensive poop.

He's definitely right about the more muscle you have, the more protein you need. Newbs can get away with eating less protein. You're wrong mate.
User avatar #213 - highhopes (02/03/2014) [-]
Do feel free to show me scientific evidence. I have found very little about the topic so far.

"Vast research supports the contention that individuals engaged in regular exercise training require more dietary protein than sedentary individuals."

From your article: The current recommended level of protein intake (0.8 g/kg/day) is estimated to be sufficient to meet the need of nearly all (97.5%) healthy men and women age 19 years and older. This amount of protein intake may be appropriate for non-exercising individuals [...]
I don't really have the statistics of how many percent of the population (I assume it varies from my country to yours) who works out regularly, but most people are in this article referred to as non-exercising individuals. I know that about 30-40% (at least!) of the population in my country are exercising regularly. Which means that "normal people" doesn't count, which is the group of people I am talking about.

www.webmd.com/vitamins-and-supplements/lifestyle-guide-11/protein-powder?page=1
Here's a reviewed scientific independent article about the subject.
User avatar #236 - drakonpunch (02/03/2014) [-]
Funny how you decided to cut that quote short.
"This amount of protein intake may be appropriate for non-exercising individuals, but it is likely not sufficient to offset the oxidation of protein/amino acids during exercise (approximately 1-5% of the total energy cost of exercise) nor is it sufficient to provide substrate for lean tissue accretion or for the repair of exercise induced muscle damage."
Basically, it is recommended for normal people who do not exercise to eat 0.8g/kg/day, but this amount is not sufficient for people who exercise. This fits with the previous quote: "Vast research supports the contention that individuals engaged in regular exercise training require more dietary protein than sedentary individuals".
My source is clearing saying that people who exercise need more protein. But you already knew that, you just ignored the last part of that sentence. You're ignorant on purpose. That source was one of the first results when I googled "do bodybuilders need more protein" and was far from the only result that supported this idea.

Regarding your source, it is an article about protein powder, not about different needs of protein.
User avatar #243 - highhopes (02/03/2014) [-]
I am talking about the people who are going the the gym in general. If your search involves "body building", then we're not talking about the same group of people.
User avatar #252 - drakonpunch (02/03/2014) [-]
Sigh...according to my source, people who exercise need more protein. Your source was about protein powder and not about how much protein people need. Understand? People who go to the gym in general need more protein, whether they do cardio, exercise or whatever. My search did not involve body building. Look it up yoursel, I read the first 5 results and they all said the same thing, I just picked out the most scientific of them. Learn to know when you're wrong mate.
User avatar #270 - highhopes (02/03/2014) [-]
Sorry, I couldn't finish my last comment, my computer crashed.

I AM talking about protein powder, and how people consume more expensive protein powder than what they really need. The average person going to the gym doesn't need protein powder if he/she has a balanced healthy diet. They need some extra protein, but not much. That little extra need for protein can be covered with some extra milk etc.
User avatar #200 - studbeefpile (02/03/2014) [-]
I do agree that most people eat way to much, but the fact remains that you do still need protein to build muscle, and even if you don't have extremely ambitious goals, you still require a bit of excess in order to build muscle, even if it's just a little bit.
User avatar #211 - highhopes (02/03/2014) [-]
And that's what I'm saying. With a balanced diet, you only need a little extra, like some cheese, milk or ham. There's not been a lot of research on the topic, unfortunately. But just HOW much each individual needs is impossible to say. Sounds to me like we're arguing over tiny amounts, which is unnecessary.
My point was that protein powder is heavily misused.

Most of that was proposed and/or approved by Obama himself. Especially the drone strikes. Which might be the least of his dickery, but he and his administration confirmed that he DOES indeed have the ability to drone strike Americans on American soil if he felt they were a threat, legally. Which is not true. It's illegal. But he said he DOES have that power. He's about a 7/10 asshole and if he goes 2 notches up, i'd say full blown dictator.

No problem. I'm always happy to help someone feeling depressed. It's an impossible feeling to imagine and even less possible to truly help, even accepting help is hard.

If you ever need motivating or even just a little pick me up, just send me a message and I'll give you the best I've got! In times like this, when everything seems to just be getting ******** , we need all the people we can get.

The advice board is full of surprisingly helpful people. Just remember to ignore the douchebags who troll there. There is always at least one.

My personal favourite thing to do when feeling down is to just play Skyrim as a serial killer and see how many people you can murder in mysterious ways before getting caught. Hardcore roleplaying in RPG's is fun too. Creating a character with a backstory and different personality traits and living their life until they eventually die, you only get one life though. You get oddly attached to them.
User avatar #48 to #47 - jabsgreywarden (02/04/2014) [-]
Yeah, I usually do that too. Or I play firefight on halo.
User avatar #49 to #48 - luthervonappledorf (02/04/2014) [-]
Always a good call. I still need to actually get Halo 4. After playing a bit of ODST I just gave up on the franchise.
User avatar #50 to #49 - jabsgreywarden (02/04/2014) [-]
Yeah, odst wasn't my favorite but it was pretty fun. My fav is halo 2
User avatar #51 to #50 - luthervonappledorf (02/04/2014) [-]
Yes! Everyone seems to love 3 or the newer ones more but, I still prefer 2 for some reason. Although I'm definitely getting 5, the trailer was far too epic to miss.

I know! Halo 3, imo, was pretty hard for me, I don't really know why... But yeah! I'm getting it as well! Cortana is coming back, I just know it!

The Legendary on 3 was ******* insane. I managed it alright on 1 and 2 but I couldn't finish it on 3, even with a friend it was just too hard. Oh man I hope she is, it looks like it'll be closer to 1 and 2 than the others so we can only hope. Although it means I'm going to need to get an Xbox One then.
User avatar #54 to #53 - jabsgreywarden (02/04/2014) [-]
Yeah, same here. Yeah, I am surprised I even got through it on legendary. It was mostly just run, run, run, only shoot at the things charging at you or whatever is in front of you. That has been my strategy on legendary... But then there were all of the achievements
User avatar #55 to #54 - luthervonappledorf (02/04/2014) [-]
Soo many achievements. But they were just easier on 1 and 2. The little flying ******* on 3 are what killed me most. Just millions of them on every damn surface with all the most annoying weapons! **** Needlers, they were just crazy powerful in 3.
User avatar #56 to #55 - jabsgreywarden (02/04/2014) [-]
Yeah they were. And I hardly use them unless I really have nothing else. Have you played any of them LASO?
