Uh it's a good vehicle, and it's not useless where I live. Mountains galore here, plenty of places to use it.

1 2 and new Vegas are all feature the same overall narrative that connects with itself in a coherent way with the same factions and narratives. Fallout 3 and tactics are the exception, tactics at least had most of the themes and motifs of the other games intact and but was in a location with different characters and their own progression, but events in fallout 1/2 would still be mentioned from time to time and they impacted the events that took place in that game. Claiming its OK for fallout 3 to be disconnected from the other game's narratives because tactics was too, you didn't take into account how similar tactics was and you over estimated how much relation fallout 3 had to any of the other games. Fallout 3 would have made much more sense as a standalone than a fallout game because its barely fallout at all. it lacks so many characteristics that the other games games have, the devs made the game just assuming all they needed for it to be fallout was adding super mutants and the brotherhood and the enclave, all revamped in their original appearance to the point of being barely recognizable, with nothing else fallout related at all! They essentially boiled down the first 2 games to the 2nd least significant faction from fallout 1, and the 2 main badguys rehashed and nerfed. If you renamed the enclave, super mutants, and brotherhood to anything else and changed the name of the game nobody would ever assume it was a fallout game, nobody would ever even associate it with fallout at all.

Saying someone should play fallout 3 first, is like telling someone to watch a modern reboot of Godzilla that barely features Godzilla first before the original films

to be honest i haven't actually played the first 4 fallout games, the iso play style annoys me, but i have seen quite a bit, I've read up about them because i did enjoy 3 and NV and i see a lot of similarities, the same history the same companies/products/weapons/various chit around the wastes. i agree its not great as a direct sequel but it is without a doubt a fallout game, because the important shit stays the same. the themes are there, not every game in a series has to follow the same story

2-then why should the first game someone plays be the one that is the most disconnected and has the least to do with the series as a whole then?

The main plot of Fallout 3 is dangerously close to a combination of Fallout 1+2:
"Fix the water! Get the G.E.C.K! Destroy the Enclave! Save our Vault! Thanks, now you're exiled"

i personally don't see the disconnect. if you're referring to the story there are 4 out of the 6 games that have very little if anything to do with vault 13 or the original vault dweller. if its the gameplay it is the easiest to learn with the most to do, see, and explore in its vanilla form. fps is a very familiar format, while the iso-turn-based style is more difficult to get used to
