Yes but as I said, if the law states that a certain form is needed to prove that status, then you need that form. I know in this case it might sound rediculous, but imagine if there was no such law/rule. You'd have people all around claiming disability without any written proof, and arbitrary decions on who gets their invalid status and who doesn't. I find it better that there is a irritating system that makes everyone equal in their obligations.

If you use a sword to hack and "pierce" plate armor, youre doing it wrong. The longsword was sharpened in three sections, the sharpest point being at the tip, medium sharpness along the middle and almost unsharpened at the bottom. Why? to use a techniqe called "half swording" where you grabbed the blade at the unsharpened section to transform the longsword into a dagger like weapon and stab the opponent in the gaps along the armpits and such. Seriously, if you bring a sword and try to cut through someone wearing full plate and chainmail, youre gonna get laughed at and killed.
i dont understand where people got the idea that you can just cut through plate.

the katana is not better at peircing than a longsword. the katana has a wery broad point, not to mention that the blade is extremely thick as the katana is a curved sword meant for slashing. The longsword has a very thin blade with a centered point, that alone makes it superior for piercing.

The video you posted is a shit example aswell, the armor used is paper thin, you wouldnt be able to cut through real armor. medieval chestplates were about 3 mm thick, no blade of the time could pierce that in a fight where people actually move around, block and parry. The "leather armor" was shit, real leather armor was thicker and hard boiled in order to make it harder and stiffer. just slapping a shirt made of leather on a doll and calling it "armor" shows just how much of a retard this guy is. when he hit the "leather amor" with the longsword it barerly made a scratch, which shows that the longsword was almost, if not completely, unsharpened.

we've found old corpses from the 1400's on gottland, sweden, where people have had both feet cut off by a single swing, so a longsword not even scratching a leather shirt proves the bullshit.

The video is a katana praise video with shitty comparisons to make the katana look divine and shit on the longsword.

Yes, I saw the video and it makes the same mistake almost every show like that makes - they use modern methods. They're not gonna bother making a katana or longsword in the traditional way, so they just cast them out of modern steel. Casting solves pretty much every problem that katana had and at that point it became the better weapon due to its' sheer mass. The katana weighs a lot more than the longsword, so if both are made in the same way and have the same sharpness, it's naturally going to perform better. And, yes, I'm aware of the uselessness of swords against armor, I posted about it below. Swords weren't even used as a main weapon in the medieval times. They were a sidearm. If you went up against someone in heavy armor you'd have a warhammer, mace or some sort of heavy pole weapon that can get through the walking tin can you're fighting. As for the rapier, I guess I could be wrong, since I keep forgetting that most sword names are just blanket terms for a particular type of weapon, so it's completely possible there were both razor sharp and dull rapiers. And yes, I read what you wrote, it just seems to me like you implied that a rapier wouldn't do shit against heavy armor.

R. Lee Ermey could narrate paint drying and it'd be interesting. Also, those tests aren't too accurate, since both the swords they used seem to have been made from modern steel. Medieval european steel was a bit shittier and the japs didn't even have steel. The iron ore they had was shit, so the best they could come up with was pig iron.

as someone who fences you are so wrong it hurts katana be better at piercing are you like brain dead? katana is a terrible piercing weapon and isnt sharp enough to take on full plate effectively the long sword was designed for both thrusting, slashing, and bashing the part of the blade near the hilt is dull all the way up to the mid section for bashing the top most edge is sharp and its tip is a point ment to be trusted inbetween armor plates in knight armor www.youtube.com/watch?v=rVmRhPPy0Ng shows you just how outmatched a katana is vs a true long sword www.youtube.com/watch?v=cFGPCTMp2cw encase you say the first one was just user error in the 2nd video the "long sword" is actually a much shorter practice sword
#140 - thechosentroll (04/20/2015) [-]
That's where you are wrong. The katana actually has worse piercing ability. If you've ever looked at one up close, you'll notice that those things are thick as fuck. A thicker blade has a harder time going through stuff. It sort of compensates with its' weight and the fact that it's twohanded, but it still wouldn't be able to do jack shit against even mail armor. Mail armor was made specifically for the purpose of stopping slashing weapons and slashing is what the katana's good at. Another common misconception is the sharpness of european swords. Excluding some very specialized swords, most were sharp as fuck. You don't use a sword to bludgeon someone - that's what maces and warhammers are for, so it wouldn't make sense to leave it dull. Lastly, you're hella wrong about the rapier, since that's one of the few swords that could have been left blunt. It was nearly useless for slashing or hacking, because of its' weight, so you didn't really need to sharpen the edges. Just make sure the tip and the part around it are sharp, so you can shank a motherfucker better. Also, the rapier is actually pretty useful against armored opponents, since precision stabby stabby weapons were used to stab people in the gaps of the armor, so a rapier would have been good at that, even though rapiers were developed after people stopped using full plate armor.
User avatar #148 - ludislavonac (04/20/2015) [-]
Check out the video I posted below, it's clear that the Katana is a better slasher and piercer.
You are wrong. If two equally armoured european knights fought against each other they wouldn't have used the swords all too much to try to slash or pierece the armour, you know why? First it's hard to pierece plate, second if you slash too much you will dull your blade, and in medieval times it cost a lot of money to get a sword back into shape. The knights would have used different combat tactics to knock an opponent down and simply stab him in an unprotected part.
As for the rapier: The word "rapier" generally refers to a relatively long-bladed sword characterized by a complex hilt which is constructed to provide protection for the hand wielding it. While the blade might be broad enough to cut to some degree (but nowhere near that of the wider swords in use around the Middle Ages), the long thin blade lends itself to thrusting. The blade might be sharpened along its entire length or sharpened only from the centre to the tip. Source: wikipedia.
You didn't even bother to read what I said about the rapier - I'd say I'd go with it against a light armoured foe and that it's a thrusting sword, not a slasher. Now go be a dumb cunt somewhere else.

I don't think a katana can do jack shit against typical European armors. (of course that's a guess)
It might do well against those from its country where most of everything is padded cloths and leather. But I think it would just fuck up the blade on any mail or plate. It seems like a very fragile weapon.
But that's why most Euro weapons were made to bash and hack. It fucks up armor and its wearer better.

Technically european swords couldn't deal with plate armor, either. That was sort of the point of plate armor. Shit was so effective people invented specialized weapons like the warhammer just to deal with it. And even then, it's still pretty damn effective.
