How do people as stupid as you even function? Do you even dress yourself in the morning?

I already freaking said "Late Medieval plate armor had more flexibility than the man inside of it." Can you read? Do you even know your ABCs?

Weight wouldn't be an issue, either. So long as you make it out of whatever composite they are using for the current design, rather than steel, it would be about the same weight as the current design.

Seriously? You don't think they don't need to be well protected? Yes, their weapons will not be edged, but they still dish out percussive force, genius. A dull axe will still break your fingers. Also, I already said that more coverage of armor means more coverage of sensors; I repeat, can you even read?

I'm not being pretentious, I'm just more educated on the matter than you. You're just another insecure faggot on the internet who believes that anyone who knows less than you is a retard, and anyone who knows more is a no-life neckbeard.

P.S. Shields were almost never used with full harnesses of plate armor, because the armor was so good that shields became pointless. Why strap a shield to your arm, when you can cover your entire body in shield and use both hands for your weapon?

That means that the armor is more flexible than the man. That does not mean that it makes the man more flexible.

Now, alexanderh has already posted video proof, and here is a video just to show you how much plate can cover. www.youtube.com/watch?v=YPKrAfww79U

If you need more, just search "plate armour mobility" on youtube.

Originality? Have you ever seen Halo? Or Quake? Or Gears of War? Or any movie with futuristic soldiers? Or motorcyclists? What Originality?

Yes, it would be better to copy the function of centuries old designs. Because they have been proven by centuries of use. It would be stupid to throw all that away and start from scratch rather than build on proven designs. NASA took inspiration from Henry VIII's armor, so why wouldn't you?

You can make it look like what ever you want, after developing the overall function. Don't forget for a second that there are actual people in those suits. This isn't a video game, or costumes in a movie, or cosplay. Function comes first, then aesthetics.

As of now, the armor they are using is designed like motorcycle gear, which protects against road rash and is made to be relatively comfortable during long trips, rather than plate armor, which is designed to protect against melee weapons.
User avatar #89 - ludislavonac (08/26/2015) [-]
Have you stopped for a moment and thought about why they chose that particular design before going on a neckbeard spree about how superior a medieval armor is?In the video the guy said that this competition will feature many different fighting styles. So it's entirely possible that they didn't go with that classic design because it hinders the movement in many of those disciplines. From the look of it they need something light and flexible.
Medieval knights didn't use the same moves as a Shaolin monk would (hand to hand combat + staff for example) as their armors were made with only certain combat techniques in mind (example: shield + sword combat, or using a lance when mounted) and were meant to protect their user against the weapons that were in use at that time. I'm pretty sure you wouldn't be able to land a high kick to an opponents head in that tin can, or it's modern copy for that matter.
Also protection, what damn protection do they need besides the most basic one? They probably won't be using real swords which could pierce the armor, that's why they have those sensors to detect how much damage was dealt. They chose an elegant and obviously functional design, so stop being a pretentious faggot.

It's a show where they get people to dress up in armor and wail on eachother with weapons. How much more functionality do you need than a suit of armor designed for that situation?

And I'll have you know I've always preferred chainmail in any case
#98 - alexanderh (08/26/2015) [-]
May I ask why you prefer chainmail? It provides substantially less protection, while offering basically no more mobility. Granted, it weighs less, but the loss of protection is very significant.
User avatar #102 - meatygoodness (08/26/2015) [-]
I'd argue that it offers more flexibility and still protects well against most attacks other than stabbing thrusts, but chainmail was only really useful when worn with a padded garment underneath, like a gambeson. With padding beneath, blows are dissipated across the surface of the mail and the padding, lessening the blow while the mail stops it penetrating, kinda similar to a kevlar vest. I can imagine it being a lot more effective against crushing blows that would warp metal plate, while still providing protection from slashes and fired bolts. Plate armor would provide more protection from projectiles but requires joints to function, which could easily be exploited by a skilled fighter, as well as the whole crushing blows thing.

Though if I'm honest I just admire the skill and time put into crafting the armor.
#106 - alexanderh (08/26/2015) [-]
Mail provides virtually no protection against blunt weapons. A mace is still going to deliver the brunt of the impact to whatever is underneath. Plates, however, are going to absorb a significant chunk of that impact. And almost all suits of plate had chainmail underneath, to protect the joints. Early plate was basically just chainmail with a lot of plates strapped to it. Later plate added more plates, and added articulating plate joints, but didn't remove the chainmail. Plate also had gambesons, by the way.

A suit of chainmail is never going to protect against any medieval weapon better than plate.
User avatar #109 - meatygoodness (08/26/2015) [-]
I'm not arguing that; the gradual shift from chain to plate mail is evidence of that. It may not have offered much against blunt blows, though I'm sure being struck by a mace will do damage no matter what you're wearing. As for piercing and slashing blows, it offered brilliant protection, like plate armor, if it were riveted. It also used less metal than plate armor while still providing significant protection, though it would've taken more time to produce.

Personally, I admire the skill and time put into crafting the armor, and I like the aesthetic.
#140 - alexanderh (08/26/2015) [-]
Yeah, the mail did provide excellent protection against slashes and cuts. It basically turned swords into 3 pound bats with the center of gravity near the handle.

But being struck by a mace will do considerably less damage if you're wearing plate armour. However, if you're hit in a joint, that joint might become damaged and lock up.
User avatar #142 - meatygoodness (08/26/2015) [-]
Plate certainly had more advantages as far as total protection goes, being covered in metal will do that, only the expense and the vulnerable joints presented an issue. I still like chain mail though, think it looks good when it's well made and riveted
#143 - alexanderh (08/26/2015) [-]
It does look nice...
But actually, in the very late plate armours, the only vulnerable joint (except for blunt force attacks against them) was the armpits, the others had both mail and plate covering them, but the plates were layered so you could still move your arms. Total protection, but with perfect mobility.
User avatar #144 - meatygoodness (08/26/2015) [-]
I'd pay good money to have a full suit of either kind of mail in any case. And a battle axe
#145 - alexanderh (08/26/2015) [-]
Here's a link to one: armstreet.com/store/armor/knight-armor-medieval-sca-combat-harness
Bit expensive, but it's built to order. You have to provide your measurements, and you'll get it a few months after ordering.
They have other sets as well, all built to order.
Oh, and this one is safe for HEMA sparring, meaning this one will genuinely protect you against swords, unlike most metal armour you can get for LARPing.

Oh, and small bug-bear of mine: Plate armour is not called platemail or plate mail. It's just called plate armour. Mail (or maille, as it's actually supposed to be written) is the rings. chainmail actually means "chain chain". The cuirass is usually called a maille hauberk.
But chainmail has been generally accepted by now, so it doesn't bother me. Just the platemail.
User avatar #146 - meatygoodness (08/26/2015) [-]
You certainly seem to know more than I do, so I'll take your word to it. I thought "mail" generally just meant armour. Figured a full set would be expensive, I'd almost rather take the long time and effort to learn the craft and forge my own set, probably more expensive but the sentimental value would be great. Doubt the missus would appreciate it as much as me either.

#147 - alexanderh (08/26/2015) [-]
Oh, the only reason I know so much is because I've researched it way too much in the last few weeks...
If you're interested, I can recommend the youtube channels "skallagrim", "schola gladiatoria", and "lindybeige". Skalla and Linybeige are both hobbyist enthusiasts, but they base their videos in research they've done, so they're mostly trustworthy sources. Lindybeige even has a degree in archaeology.
Schola Gladiatoria is run by a HEMA instructor who has personally read many of the fighting manuals, and owns (and has fought with) a large number of different medieval weapons.

I highly recommend watching their videos, very interesting stuff.

And forging your own set of armour would definitely be more expensive, but it would be a great project. If I had the time, money, and space, I would definitely learn to do it myself.
User avatar #148 - meatygoodness (08/26/2015) [-]
More than I have in any case. I think I've seen Skalla before but not the other two, I'll have to watch them sometime. I'd love to forge something, perhaps make it out of a lighter modern alloy, if that's work.
#150 - alexanderh (08/26/2015) [-]
A suit of plate made of titanium would work very well, actually. It's lighter than steel, and is even more durable. It would allow the armour to be very light, and protect just as well.
It would be expensive, though...
User avatar #152 - meatygoodness (08/26/2015) [-]
I think I read prices were decreasing fairly recently, maybe someday... I'd love to see a set of titanium armour

Well if you use the pill completely right, always take it on the right time, don't mix with suubstances you're not supposed to etc. it works perfectly. The 1% you keep hearing about are the girls who just vomited before intercourse or something like that. Also, always check your condoms first. Pill + condom really is enough, if used correctly.
