Sugar? Dangerous? Sugar is necessary. An excess of anything kills you. The most relevant comparison of sugar and aspartame is nutritive value. Aspartame is non-nutritive. The only thing you get from it are amino acids that you are going to get from other foods you need in your diet. That means an excess of waste products and zero nutritive value. Sugar and more specifically glucose is what every cell in your body gets energy from. Insulin is released into your body to open cell walls providing a pathway for glucose into the cells. Diabetes is a disease that is characterised by a lack of insulin production this denying your body the ability to get energy from sugar. Aspartame can not be turned into glucose. It's useless to your body. You eat sweet things for energy. Aspartame is sweet but cannot be turned into energy. I'm sure you can see why this is a bad thing. No, it doesn't cause cancer or neurological defects or any of the myriad of diseases attributed to it by internet misinformation mongers, but it isn't good for you either.

Artificial sweeteners cause your body to no longer associate the taste of sugar with the presence of sugar in your foods. This messes with your mind's way of regulating sugar intake, which causes you to consume more of it without realizing it. Mind you, this isn't conclusive, but it's gaining more and more evidence that artificial sweeteners may do more harm than good.

Aspartame is significantly more damaging than sugar. All artificial sugars are. That's not to say that consuming any amount of sugar is good for you; but nutrisweet, splenda, even xylitol, they all have known side effects in a certain percentage of people. Remember the sugar free gummy bears? Remember peanutbitter? Well, the shits is the least of it. In high enough amounts, sorbitol and aspartame can cause stomach ulcers.

Glucose is necessary for cellular function. Your body manufactures glucose from any carbohydrate that you ingest, so the idea that sugar is bad for you is asinine. Eating one kind of sugar rather than a different one can have a benefit because of the chemical processes utilized in producing glucose. Eating too much sugar is bad for you. Eating a non-nutritive sugar substitute isn't directly bad for you(according to any reputable study) unless you have PKU, but it isn't good for you and that's certainly relevant. Eating aspartame means you still need to get sugar from elsewhere.
Ultimately, the best way to get the glucose your body needs is to eat a carbohydrate that contains multiple nutritive components. And if consuming sugar in drinks, a balance of fructose and glucose is preferable.
Disinformation is the most dangerous aspect of any conversation about health and nutrition.
