My right big toe had a persistent ingrown toenail that kept coming back. Had two removals before the one they just did. I got injected with about 6 syringes of anesthetic, which of course feels like molten lead.

They went in, cut out the infected area, scraped the root from my bone, then they proceeded to sew my fucking toe to my toenail. The worst part of it was easily the anesthetic and the pain afterwards.

Their suggestion? "Oh, yeah, btw, if you start bleeding from the toe and it doesn't stop, go to the hospital." Like almost bleeding out was just a casual part of their day. :U

Well, when the ingrown toenail is around for weeks, allowing it to get infected and thus needing more anesthetic to numb me up...Just not a fun time.

But hey, it's over now hopefully . Surgery in general sucks. I remember getting my tonsils removed and waking up barely able to breathe.

Really? The Doc injected something in my toe and it made it rock solid and then removed it. The painful part was after the anesthetic flushed out of my system. I woke up in the middle of the night with crazy pain in my toe and like I couldn't even do anything so I just grabbed my sheets and bit arm as hard as I could.

In case anyone is curious: outline of the procedure
Clean the area in sterile fashion
Local injection or digital nerve block depending on practitioner preference ( I prefer digital block patients seem to complain of less pain but it takes longer) using lidocaine without epinephrine.
Cut along a line on the toenail 1/3 the distance of the infected area using scissors.
Remove ingrown toenail with forceps.
Scrape along nail bed to remove any collected materials.
Ablate nail matrix using acidic solution...afterwards neutralize with base ( This is the same principle as killing the root of a weed)
Wrap and send patient home with advise to take OTC ibuprofen or acetaminophen for pain.

Hope you found that mildly interesting!

Had to go to the doctor because of an ingrown toenail.. Hurt so bad and I just looked away. It was horrible but before I removed my appendix or one ear infection I had hurt a hundred times more..

I have a nail that tends to get ingrown but I cut it out myself every time, before it gets too bad.
User avatar
#113 - bigblacknegro (02/27/2016) [-]
did they also cut open the ingrown part and scratched out the root?
cuz thats what they did to me and the worst part is, the narcotics didn't numb the area completely and they injected it near the joint. that was incredibly disgusting, so i felt a bit of the pain and something that feels like you'd scratch a rough surface.

Wasn't painful to me... but then, my doctor didn't slide the entire nail off she drugged the toe and sliced off a big part of the side.

Afterwards I could feel the throbbing pain when the drugs dropped but it was only a relief after the months of pain I had witnessed, finally I was released.

I've tried removing it maybe 2 or 3 times, went to have it surgically removed, kept coming back, I've just resigned to wearing steel toe shoes, and now it's pretty much receded completely and is hardly an issue now.

And now I still wear the shoes because (A) they're the only ones I have (B) they're only 30$ and (C) they've lasted me two and 1/2 years.

I used to get them as a kid all the time... If I recall correctly, we'd just cut a little notch on the nail on the side it was growing in so it wouldn't keep going if it wasn't too late and there were quite a few times that we had to drain the puss... It wasn't the most fun part of my childhood but at least this site was yellow/green, I didn't have an account, and I actually had friends.

How?
All you need to do is get 2-3 shots of anaesthetic in the toe with the ingrown toenail, then the doc slices off the nail from the root, puts some kinda acid-y stuff on the roots so that it doesnt grow back.
Had it done on both of my nails.
He told me to not look at it and I'll be fine. I watched a youtube vid whilst he did it.
He finished before the vid ended and I didn't feel a thing.

Yeah, my grandma had issues so they ripped out all her toes at the same time. Weirded me out to see her without shoes since I'd forget and seeing a pair of feet with no nails is pretty damn strange.

I know the pain bro, I had an ingrown toenail so the doctor cut it out and killed the matrix or whatever so my big toe's nail grows back super fast. Since then I've broken the new nail on that same toe twice and both times had to pull it off of my nail while the blood had fused the nail to the meat underneath which was quite honestly one of the most painful things in my life. Now my toenail on my big toe is just half-normal where it grows from and the end is a mess.
User avatar
#24 - lieutenantmustang (02/26/2016) [-]
Did your doctor just pull it off or something?, I had two ingrown nails on the same toe in the same place because it grew into my toe and not out, but my doctor froze my toe and then cut it out, I didn't feel a thing.

I really meant before it was removed because it got infected when they removed it they gave an anaesthetic and just cut the bad side out
