I agree, keeping with logic and common sense is normally a priority. The hills have eyes, y'know?
On the other hand, there is a point where reason is to be thrown to the curb. We have gone past that point and that is why I am here.

Born too late to explore the Earth, born too soon to explore the Galaxy. Born just in time to browse DANK MEMES.

I'm all for progres and looking back at history I get filled by the same feeling.

But I do feel like pointing out that what counts as progress is extremly subjective. We judge ourselves as having made leaps in technology and knowledge. But those leaps are only judged far by ourselves with no reference points. And what even makes such a leap impressive? Only our own subjective values.

There are no objective goals, roles, or achievements in existence. We should cherish humanity's achievements but remember that these are only achievements because we've collectively decide they are achievements.

This just in: anon figures out the concept of exponential growth. Minds have been blown. I repeat, there's brain matter all over the walls and floor, it's horrific, the cleaning lady is going to strangle someone, minds have been blown.

Though, to be fair, it's not really exponential, it only seems that way because of our current position on the curve of human progress. In reality, it's not an exponential curve going off into infinity, it's more like a weird, stretched out "S". You start off slow, there's next to no progress being made, the curve hardly goes up, but scientific discoveries lead to new scientific discoveries. Thus, progress fuels itself. The more progress you have, the quicker it increases, so the curve keeps going up more and more and more until you reach a certain point where it just shoots upward, nearly vertically, increasing at an absurd speed. And it just keeps going and going and going until you reach a point (around the middle) where you start getting diminishing returns. The smaller a processor is, the harder it is to make a smaller one. The bigger a telescope is, the harder it is to make a bigger one. That sort of shit. And progress starts slowing down more and more and more until you reach a point where it practically stops, because:
a) You've discovered everything there is to discover
b) Discovering new things takes such absurd resources and so much time that it's just not feasible.
c) The most likely reason - physics are a bitch

In short, humanity isn't just going to keep advancing infinitely. Infinity only exists in math. In real life, everything has a limit, which you eventually reach. Who knows, maybe we'll reach it in 4 million years, maybe in 4000, maybe next Tuesday. But there is a limit. Just saying. Be excited for the future, but not too excited, there are some things which we just can't achieve. Remember, kids, every time you say "nothing is impossible" the laws of physics punch a scientist in the dick.

I can't really see Humanities achievements the way he can because I believe it's all for naught.

What achievement is stone tools when the universe is doomed to end, taking everything we will ever do with it?

Makes space travel seem pointless, though it is the only thing with any form of tangible relevance we could do.

Just because a game is fated to end, doesn't mean you shouldn't play to win it.

Maybe we're all doomed to death and destruction. Until then, we're still here, damn it. And we have an obligation to ourselves and our progeny to survive and thrive.

Life has no meaning. Let's give it one.

Humans for humans. The world as ours.

I never said we shouldn't try, I think we should definitely try.

Though knowing it's all for nothing makes it seem...weird, I can't really say how it makes me feel.

You don't know it's for nothing. Nobody does. We barely know anything at all. You hear rumor that it's all for nothing, and you believe that? How faithless is atheism. Don't give up. Keep trying and providence will be found.

Doomed to end? fuck off in the time it takes to end we probably had already kicked entropy ass three times

We've tried so hard, and got so far, but in the end, it doesn't even matter?

Why don't you just accelerate the process and kill yourself if you truly believe it is all pointless?

why make this comment if the post will stay up?
why not kill yourself since you will die anyways?
why waste your time on this website when you could actually be doing something productive, like the people you say just wasted their time?

I get to live a day without going hungry, I get to experience love, I get to experience the company of friends, the joy of being drunk, experience all manners of entertainment, experience the heavenly experience of fucking.

Not everything is about the legacy you leave behind, what difference does it make to you? You'll be dead someday anyway. Living a good life of pleasure, enjoyment, and happiness, that's the true accomplishment, that's the goal.

It's all about giving life meaning.
You're going to die one day- we all are. Enjoy life as you live it.
Sure, one day it's all going to end, but that day isn't today- it's far, far from now. We'll both be dead.
Enjoy life for what it is, and not what it will be.

That's like saying it's ok to trash your mid-90s Toyota because there are other cars out there. Your broke ass isn't driving around in that because you want to, you're doing because it's all you can afford right now. Maybe one day you'll be able to put a payment down on a 2005 Camry, but it doesn't mean shit if you die in a car crash before then.

So we travel, find other planets, maybe life.

Then the universe dies out.

We should at least try, though I'm not too enthusiastic about the outcome.

Wait wait wait....how do you know the universe dies out? So what if the most likely hypothesis for the universe ending in thermal equilibrium occurs or it expands forever and eventually everything is so far apart nothing can happen. Those things will happen in trillions of years....you know what that means for humanity? We have an eternity to discover every truth about this universe and find a way to prevent it from happening. You have so little faith in your own kind it's disappointing. Humans change their environment to suit them...and we will always beagle to find a work around to any impossibility.

If it keeps getting narrower, who knows what we could have invented in a million years to overcome the universe expansion, we are the lords of our galaxy
#2 - anon (08/11/2016) [-]
kinda sucks though that like 60% of the world is stuck a 1000 years behind socially and are now dragging the rest of the world down by the means we invented
