I agree, keeping with logic and common sense is normally a priority. The hills have eyes, y'know?
On the other hand, there is a point where reason is to be thrown to the curb. We have gone past that point and that is why I am here.

i agree on the first and last one, but what if i am in the process of becoming a citizen and want to buy a house? In the US it can take 10 years to become a citizen. Not being able to buy property during those 10 years seems unfair

Totally agree with you I've been saying this for months /Femme+fatale/hdgifs/5944052/17#17 , but I'd like to know what you'd set as the requirement. Would it be outright owning a home, or mortgaging? Would it include people who are in the military?

Not sure about why you'd be concerned about them owning property, but I'm with you on the other two. Frankly, it boggles my mind that someone can not be a citizen of the US and still vote as to who they want elected.
#38 - estebancolberto (06/26/2016) [-]
If foreigners couldn't own property in the US, I'd be out of a job and a good paying one at that. I work for a Japanese owned company. Globalization is scary, but absolute economic nationalism is just plain dumb except when it comes to strategic resources.
User avatar
#32 - solinvictus (06/26/2016) [-]
Technically they can't, as far as I know, but if the state doesn't require an ID to prove that you are a citizen then people can pretend to be citizens and vote.
#33 - thepizzadevourer (06/26/2016) [-]
Here's the thing. Pennsylvania passed a law that required you to present ID to prove you were a citizen. If you didn't have ID, you could easily get a voter ID card by proving you were a citizen (usually via birth certificate). Courts ruled it unconstitutional because the law could deny someone from voting who was actually a citizen and didn't have ID. So basically they can't require you to prove that you have the right to vote, which in my mind is beyond retarded. What's the point of having the requirement if there's no way to enforce it?
#13 - anon (06/26/2016) [-]
Only people who own land and make $100,000+ should be allowed to vote. Poor people are just too stupid to know how to vote.

wealth =/= intellect. theres a fuck load of stupid ass rich people just like theres plenty of hard working smart poor people.

base it on education, you need to have passed high school education to vote.

or alternatively

in order to vote you must first pass a random 10 questions that are related to the nominees and their manifestos, so it'd force people to study up on the politics of each candidate before being able to vote. everyone who passes clearly has done their homework and is making an informed choice and those who didn't look into it will be refused.
User avatar
#93 - arandomanon (06/26/2016) [-]
Yes, because relatively poor people can't be educated, apparently. I think voting should be a privilege, and not a right, but a privilege anyone can get if they prove they know how things work and they don't vote just by following trends.

As much as I agree that those in poverty are too malleable during elections, $100,000 is ridiculous. If you make $40,000 a year you're in the top 20% of earnings world wide.
#180 - anon (06/26/2016) [-]
The issue with having only the breadwinners be allowed to vote is then we're basically heading back into a system we've long since decided was shit.
Denying poor people the right to vote is how revolutions start.

$40,000 a year, you are likely only renting. $100,000 a year, you likely run a business or have good enough work ethic to find an employer and bust your ass up the ladder. Poor people are lazy and stupid. If they weren't, they would be rich and not protesting to get $15 an hour flipping burgers.

naaah.. i actually know plenty of rich and flat out stupid unwise, that is people who've either inherited their money from somewhere or who've just been lucky in their lives.

same applies to good grades, just because someone has good grades doesn't mean they're wise or know how to use their intelligence.

but then again, they're not mutually exclusive.
#34 - insanefreak (06/26/2016) [-]
You are obviously retarded anon.

Intelligence and income aren't necessarily related.
Wisdom and income aren't necessarily related.
Experience and income aren't necessarily related.

Being an edgy cunt and an anon aren't necessarily related, although in this case, I think that's exactly what you are.

I work hard, save my money, I earn about 17K euros a year, taxes included. I rent, aye, cheaply too, because buying a house on my own is currently impossible for me. So I save, look out for opportunities. I learn on the side, improve my craft, expand my knowledge. Picked up French again, as what I remember from school allows me to speak it decently, but my writing isn't up to standard. My English is fairly fluent, so I won't work on that, but I do intend to study German again when I have more time.

I follow politics, researched a lot of economical topics, and love history and how it influences today.

You're departing from the idea that rich people actually care. No, most rich people will try to keep the status quo. Why wouldn't they? They're doing good, they have no desire for change, and the change wouldn't happen then until it reached the point where the 'poor' would revolt because it got too out of hand for them.

But then again, you probably have every answer in the book for that, don't you? If you want to have an honest to god discussion about it, then feel free to bring proper arguments, and support them. Explain ideas, your reasoning, counter my arguments. Bring it on in a logical and rational fashion.

Or be an edge anonymous cunt, your choice really. Which was possible because people who didn't earn that much fought for it by the way.

Oh, and if you want a country where only the rich have influence, may I suggest visiting the non democratic Middle-Eastern countries?
#37 - anon (06/26/2016) [-]
yea, no. If you worked as hard as you claim, if you lived in a Laissez-faire system, you would be able to afford a home but socialism is keeping you down. It is keeping America down, thats for sure.

If you aren't rich by age 30, you are doing it wrong. Hard work doesn't just mean working hard. You have to make yourself noticeable even if you have to fuck over everyone. You don't go to work to make friends, you go there to make money.

#120 - anon (06/26/2016) [-]
If that is the value of coffee there is nothing you can do aside from market your own. An economy regulated by only the market is the only kind that works. Any government intervention no matter how kind hearted is detrimental.

Actually my point is that anon called poor people stupid and lazy, despite the fact that someone has to bring us our coffee. Someone has to lay bricks. Someone has to teach at public schools. Etc.

We can't be a society and all rich, it's obvious.

Making money doesn't make you smart or hard working. Hell my father has been CFO un GoldmanSachs for years and now that he's retired he's always told me that going to top was more luck than anything else.

The only part most people actually agree with is that noncitizens shouldn't vote.
Anyone should be able to own property in any country, including noncitizens and even nonresidents. The whole point of private property is that the government doesn't decide who is and isn't allowed to have it: it's owned, bought and sold by private individuals and entities.
As for government benefits, legal permanent residents who are not citizens can and should be able to receive government benefits, seeing as they live in the country, pay taxes and contribute to the economy. In the US at least, the only significant difference between a citizen and a permanent resident is that permanent residents can't vote.
