Pretty ******* much.

Finally finished Kaiji a couple days ago.
1st season 8/10- Loved the Espoir/RockPaperScissors arc but I personally liked the E-Card arc more. Can't really explain why, maybe it was because it was similar to RockPaperScissors but with higher stakes and a better opponent. The schemes were a little less clever though, in my opinion.
2nd season 7/10- I want to give it higher, I really do, but that last damn arc....my god. The Bog dragged out waaayyy too long and it really wasn't all that satisfying or anything. Just a kind of meh feel. The Chinchirorin arc was honestly way better, even if the tricks were easy to see through. I knew the dice were rigged the moment the game started, I was close to the actual trick but a little off at the same time. The Bog was a little more complicated in terms of cleverness but still, way too long.

Now I'm episode 10 of Akagi and I love how it 'teaches' you as you go along.

10/10 both seasons, get on my level pleb
User avatar #1514 to #1512 - kotor (09/18/2014) [-]
you still haven't given me an argument why the first season should be a mere 8/10
nor why you take out an entire 3 points from the second season only because Bog is "dragged on"
User avatar #1511 to #1510 - kotor (09/18/2014) [-]
Bog best arc you don't understand.

Actually, I'm too lazy to argue, but Kaiji is a masterpiece. Every arc except beginning of beam arc
User avatar #1513 to #1511 - sirchris (09/18/2014) [-]
I dunno, maybe my pleb taste is kicking in after not seeing good **** for a while, but I really just didn't like how the bog dragged out. Ehh, argue with me tomorrow mmkay?
User avatar #1515 to #1513 - kotor (09/18/2014) [-]
because the character progression in Kaiji is pretty natural and believable. He starts as a nobody and he takes the exact actions a nobody would take. Before you argue he's too smart for a nobody, he isn't really. He's just smart in the gambling department and most of his tricks are acts of desperation and he himself is a one trick pony.

Actually, you really haven't given me an argument at all why the first season is 8/10 instead of 10/10 (except the part that the trick are less clever? wut?).

As for Bog being dragged on, it's only the last time he plays that's dragged on and that's because the machine was just really not giving up and like every underground casino, there were plenty of tricks (how believable and logical would it have been for a casino to get tricked by a single trick in 1-2 episodes and give up some 500 million yen - that's 5 million $)

Narrator is also god tier
User avatar #1516 to #1515 - sirchris (09/20/2014) [-]
Kaiji isn't' the smartest guy, if he was, he wouldn't be broke as **** . I know that. Narrator is also unarguable.
Well when I said, tricks are less clever, I meant that Kaiji's blood on the cards trick in E-Card was a little less clever. I mean don't get me wrong it's still smart as **** , but if Kaiji is bleeding everywhere and touching the blood, then touching the cards, shouldn't someone have picked up on that? I dunno, I just feel like someone should've said something...Also, since I didn't rewatch the Espoir arc and I left off from where I was 2 years ago, didn't Kaiji use probability and card hoarding as his winning tricks in that?

Also, I didn't really like the beam arc in terms of what it was. I figured the gambling would be dice, cards, etc. but then we have them walking across electrified beams between two skyscrapers and it suddenly becomes a little too much. Sure it was for the entertainment of the rich bastards and it's not like anyone cares about the low-lifes but it just felt like too much. In terms of how it was handled however, I can't argue there. Once people started dying, all the characters became a little more real and made realistic decisions as well as actually become afraid and make realistic mistakes soooo, can't argue on that. (As stupid as that sounds)

The Bog. You beat me here. I can't really give facts as to why I didn't like it, it was only my personal entertainment affecting the score. It is true that it would've been pretty stupid for the machine to just lose 550 million yen so easily. But when I said it was dragged on I meant it was just a suuuper long arc. Didn't it start the moment Kaiji got out of the underground?
Only reason I think it was so long is because I was really expecting a rematch between Kaiji and Hyoudou, after all didn't Kaiji say he would get him or something like that? Unless that 700 million was his way of revenge. In which case, that didn't seem like revenge on Hyoudou, only on Ichijo. Am I wrong?

Like this?

Poplan >> Shenkopp though. But then there's Dusty. Dusty > Poplan > Shenkopp.

And well, good luck with that. Honestly speaking though, the last season is sort of underwhelming compared to the rest. The whole Reuenthal revolt was pretty damn stupid. It would have literally taken a letter. A mere letter. To solve all of that. But nope, Reuenthal has to be all "muh pride", "muh destiny".

I was hoping there was fanart of that, nice.

I agree, Poplan is great now that he's gotten a fair bit of screentime. Same with Attenborough.

I kind of get what you mean with Reuenthal. I just assumed it was what he wanted to do all along and this was just his excuse to do so. Still kind of silly though.

Reuenthal's death was probably the second manliest moment in the series. Bucock, Reuenthal, Lutz - top 3. Or well, the way Reuenthal was not giving a **** about his wound was the manly part I guess.

User avatar #1492 to #1491 - kotor (08/26/2014) [-]
Poplan is really based. I just think Shenkopp is too much of a murderer for my taste. They were really crude - the whole Rosenritter, even though they served a good man and cause.

In a fair democratic world, they'd be among the first to get executed. Then again, Shenkopp has a lot of bro moments, which is why he's pretty high on my list.

Poplan on the other side is just based all around. Him getting drunk after Yang's and Konev's deaths showed he is a bit more emotional and human than Shenkopp.

Attenbro is just a bro all around. "So what?"

To be fair to Reuenthal, he never received the report that it was the work of Terraists. Things might have been different if he had. Still, he could have gotten away without that report. He just wanted to "follow his destiny".
User avatar #1494 to #1492 - boyddamilkman (08/26/2014) [-]
I really don't like the way the Rosenritter, and ground forces in general look, like with the axes and stuff. I understand they throw the zephyr particle **** around to give some sort of reason for them to use hand to hand combat, but it just looks really silly in my eyes.

Yea, if one thing can be said for the alliance, they have the most chill and likable staff.
#1495 to #1494 - kotor (08/26/2014) [-]
Those suits and axes would make sense if LOGH wasn't so inconsistent about armors. Sometimes those ****** just walk and tank multiple laser shots/bullets, sometimes a single one is fatal. Sometimes knives do nothing about those armors, sometimes a pocket knife might be deadly against Rosenritter.

It's just inconsistent.
User avatar #1496 to #1495 - boyddamilkman (08/26/2014) [-]
Yeah, like how with how they used wooden tables to stop the guns when the Terraists attacked Yangs ship or when Schenkopp blocked a shot with his axe. Are the energy guns just meant to only work against organic material or something? Because that seems rather silly and they might as well just go back to projectile firearms. I never really felt like I understood how ground combat really worked in the world since they never made any definite rules for it.
User avatar #1497 to #1496 - kotor (08/26/2014) [-]
well, people don't watch LOGH for ground combat. We could speculate how everything works and it might make sense, but I don't think the author ever intended to give importance to ground combat.

In all seriousness though, **** was great 9/10.
#1438 to #1437 - kotor (06/19/2014) [-]
Gourry's just such a huge bro. Definitely the biggest bro in the series.

Anyway: I think we can definitely agree that Next was better. The plot, the humour, the villains, the world building, the characters. Pretty much all of it. And the animation.

-Favorite villain
-Favorite filler-comedy episode
-Favorite episode
-Favorite party members?
User avatar #1439 to #1438 - boyddamilkman (06/19/2014) [-]
"How long do you plan to protect me?"
"I don't know, the rest of my life?"

Gourry is a solid 10/10 dude.

And yea, the first season really doesn't have anything on Next.

I'm honestly not sure who the best villain was. I think I liked Gaav more than Phibrizzo, but Phibrizzo definitely raised the stakes higher.

Best comedy episode was the one where they raid that cursed tower dressed as animals. That was just great.

I really liked the episodes in the sand temple with the Claire Bible copy in it. Also seeing Gourry being a legend in the final episode made it pretty great.

Lina and Gourry a best.
User avatar #1442 to #1439 - kotor (06/19/2014) [-]
Our opinions match it seems. Gaav was a better character, Phibrizzo was the best villain.

Did you expect Xellos to be who he really turned out to be?
User avatar #1443 to #1442 - boyddamilkman (06/19/2014) [-]
That he wasn't human, yes. That he was working for Phibrizzo and all that, no.

User avatar #1445 to #1444 - boyddamilkman (06/19/2014) [-]
Well he was fairly obviously above all the party members and considering monsters like Saygram or whatever his name was kinda freaked out when he saw Xellos there's fair reason to believe he's considerably powerful. It was only really made obvious that he was on the level he was when Gaav started acknowledging him too though.
#1446 to #1445 - kotor (06/19/2014) [-]
Don't trust him, bro.

Anyway - I think the best filler/comedy episode was the one where they go fishing some dragon. That's about all the difference.

Next one is Try. I won't comment on whether it's better than First or Next or worse, but it has a bit more comedy AND is darker this time around.
User avatar #1447 to #1446 - boyddamilkman (06/19/2014) [-]
That one was really funny too. The costumes just got to me though.

More comedy as in more filler episodes? I mean I like those episodes a lot but I feel like there's a good amount of them in each season and I don't know if I would like more.
User avatar #1450 to #1447 - kotor (06/25/2014) [-]
m8, you started TRY yet?
#1452 to #1450 - boyddamilkman (06/30/2014) [-]

Try was really good. Had some really nice moments in it. Though I didn't really like how they jumped into the second set of filler episodes without any real closure, felt kinda off. Filia was also a bit dull and annoying towards the beginning though she got some pretty good development later on.

So with this being anime original, how do the two newer seasons work with Gourry having lost the sword of light? Since that seems like a pretty significant plot point.

Also watched all the movies and such over the weekend. Most of them suffered from having too many enemies with none of them being very interesting or engaging. The ones that were more focused, like Great or Excellent were more entertaining as a result.
User avatar #1453 to #1452 - kotor (07/01/2014) [-]
Try has a couple of problems, which makes it a bit unlikable to me
-Zelgadis acts way too friendly out out a sudden in this whole season
-Lina tries to use Giga Slave once, even though that makes **** all sense, given the development in Next
-Valgaav is just a terrible villain. Not a terrible character, but a terrible villain. Ultimately, he convinces himself he should die in like less than a minute. Didn't even hear his proper reasoning for that. This makes the whole deal feel cheap. Just an enemy who could have killed them on spot but decides to let himself get killed out of nowhere

Among some other smaller problems and some worse fillers out there. The structure wasn't that good.

Ye, Gourry losing his sword is a significant plot point and they kind of address it in the new seasons, but don't expect TOO much. There is more focus on this in the LNs and it actually leads to a new plotline. Well, he was supposed to lose his sword back then when Phibrizzo stole it the first time (he sent it back to Dark Star at that time in the different universe)

Movies aren't great despite what many might want you to think. As I said - The Motion Picture is the only good one, because it's not anti-climatic and has some point to it. Rest are kind of fillers with anti-climatic endings.

Anyway..did you like the rape mode Xellos turned on in Try? He's kind of a dick and it shows in this season the most
User avatar #1454 to #1453 - boyddamilkman (07/01/2014) [-]
I mean I guess Zelgadis is less moody but he didn't really seem too friendly. Maybe that's just me not caring about him and not paying much attention to how his character behaves though. I get what you're saying about the giga slave and Valgaav though.

I'll probably start reading the LNs after I finish the two new seasons. Do they suffer from the standard LN **** writing and endless prose or are they better than that? You seem to hold them in fairly high regard at least.

Honestly I was a bit surprised. Not that he double crossed Lina or anything that's understandable, but his dickness combined with a fair amount of childishness felt weird.
User avatar #1455 to #1454 - kotor (07/01/2014) [-]
The LNs are better than most LNs out there. There's no standard **** writing it and god no, there's no endless prose.
The first volume is rather poorly written or poorly translated, but that's it.
Normally it's something like this
"The earth continued to rumble as black smoke rose from it steadily. A large crater of red earth had been carved out of the surface of the forest, a solitary red silhouette standing at its center. His demeanor calm, the man who claimed to be the Red Priest silently raised his head."

It's standard average writing, but above average LN level. It's also written from Lina's POV, so it reads like as if..Lina was telling the story. But not with poor vocabulary and such.

Don't want to over or under-sell it basically.
User avatar #1456 to #1455 - boyddamilkman (07/01/2014) [-]
Ah that's good. LN writing really bothers me and usually makes me enjoy their anime adaptation much more with the only real exception being Kino.
User avatar #1457 to #1456 - kotor (07/01/2014) [-]
ehh, I'd say the anime and the LN are about even for Slayers, but objectively speaking, I can nitpick more stuff from the anime than the LN. It's a more cursive and logically constructed story. And the characters have a bit of a more realistic approach.

The anime is more fun though
User avatar #1459 to #1457 - boyddamilkman (07/01/2014) [-]

Try has nothing to do with the original story written in the LNs. It's an original story written by JC Staff. It's okay though, I won't comment on how good or bad it was, I'll let you decide.
Next has like ~50 % of it correctly, out of which may be 5 % is truly faithful to the books.

One of the first arc of Next in Atlas City was way more different in the books. Man, there's just way too many differences in here.

For instance..
The Atlas City arc (with Halcyform, where Seigram appears for the first time) actually happens right after they defeat Shabranigdu and there's only Gourry and Lina in it. It's also pretty dark. This kanzaka.wikia.com/wiki/Raugnut_Rushavna
is what we see for the first time in Slayers in that book. Human experiments, a more creepy psychopathic Halcyform, Lina and Gourry getting drunk as **** , some sexual tension between them, Gourry seriously fighting a swordsman and killing him in a duel.

After this arc comes the arc with Copy Rezo and Amelia isn't part of it. The arc with Copy Rezo is relatively faithful I'd say, but just the way things happen is different. There's no magical book that gives Copy Rezo Zanaffar powers for one. No library. Sylphiel is still there though.

In the last fight against Copy Rezo Lina doesn't actually attempt to use Giga Slave only to get almost killed after that. It's Gourry who takes the upper hand over Rezo, but tells him he'd spare his life if he stops now and doesn't follow them anymore, only to almost get killed by Copy Rezo. Lina and Zelgadis actually him him.

Another thing is: Seigram only appears in Atlas City arc, doesn't appear later on (or rather does, but I won't spoil). You get to actually know Gaav's "general" and "priest".

And there's no Gourry flying around to stop Lord of Nightmares and save Lina. Lord of Nightmares simply leaves Lina's body after she's done with Phibrizzo. In this regard, the anime was better. Though Phibrizzo is more menacing and smarter in the novels. There's also no Martina and Zangulus.

Amelia and Zelgadis don't get shipped at all too

By the way, is the lewd looking daughter from episode one coming back. She's been in all the eyecatches and **** like she's a main character or something.
User avatar #1435 to #1434 - kotor (06/12/2014) [-]
ye, she's a recurring joke character. Well, she sort of plays an actual small important role and that's it. That's later though
User avatar #1433 to #1431 - boyddamilkman (06/11/2014) [-]
I'm sure, I'm sure.

First three episodes of Next were really fun though. Haven't enjoyed my time watching an anime this much in a good while.

Though I finished the first series earlier today.
User avatar #1406 to #1405 - kotor (06/08/2014) [-]
how was it? did you like the first or the latter arc better?
User avatar #1407 to #1406 - boyddamilkman (06/08/2014) [-]
Second one definitely. It was more fun, had more likable and varied characters, and was more interesting than the first. The joke episodes in the beginning of the second were fun too.

I was honestly pretty bored at some points in the first.
#1409 to #1407 - kotor (06/08/2014) [-]
The first 10 episodes (till Shabranigdu dies) is, imo, the weakest 'canon' part of the series. That's literally the very first volume of the LNs and truth to be told - the most faithful.

Second part is definitely better in the anime, but even better in the LN. In the LN, Amelia's not even there at this point and when Lina was first kidnapped (when they first get the "wanted" posters), the guards tried to rape her, but Gourry helped her out.

It's very different. Copy Rezo also looks actually horrifying. Shows how ****** up Rezo really was - experimenting with people, mixing them with monsters and making them look really creepy.
User avatar #1411 to #1409 - boyddamilkman (06/08/2014) [-]
Yea, the first one was pretty lame to be honest. Everything felt really transparent and the entire final fight was basically stand around and try things until something works. It was really dull to watch.

I kinda liked Amelia in that part. It was pretty funny.

Does Rezo show up any more? I was honestly a bit disappointed when I saw that he (Well not really him but you know what I mean)) was the antagonist again. At least the arc gave a bit more development to him though.
User avatar #1412 to #1411 - kotor (06/08/2014) [-]
He doesn't. That was it
User avatar #1413 to #1412 - boyddamilkman (06/08/2014) [-]
Alright then.

What do I do after Next? Because everything really seems to split off after that.
User avatar #1415 to #1413 - kotor (06/08/2014) [-]
did you like Zelgadis/Amelia/Gourry btw?
did you dislike any of them?
User avatar #1417 to #1415 - boyddamilkman (06/08/2014) [-]
Liked Gourry, he a cool dude. Amelia was pretty cute but was a little much sometimes. Zelgadis didn't really have too much going for him really. Didn't really care for him to much but I wouldn't say I dislike him.
User avatar #1420 to #1417 - kotor (06/08/2014) [-]
Zelgadis gets more fleshing out in the last 2 seasons even though that's not canon. Well, it's still a good thing. He's kinda actually edgy in the novels. Nobody plays any funny trick on him or whatsoever

Ye, I like Gourry the most out of them, but some Amelia moments are 10/10
User avatar #1422 to #1420 - boyddamilkman (06/08/2014) [-]
I could see Zelgadis being pretty edgy, even in the anime he had some broody moments.

Most of Amelia's moments arise from her whole hero of justice shtick. Sometimes it works well and other times it really doesn't.
User avatar #1423 to #1422 - kotor (06/11/2014) [-]
so, did you start Next?

Yo, finally had to time to read 20th century boys. Man that was such a wild ride, really took a bunch of turns everywhere. This is definitely something I'll have to read again someday to really understand everything that happened. I guess my major problem was that the whole was started just because Kenji stole a space exploration force badge. Seems like a rather weak motivation. I guess 21st century boys will probably explain it all a little clearer. I'll probably read it soon, but I got some exams coming up.

One of the plot points I was looking forward to the whole story was the return of Kenji though. They just ended his story so abruptly that he couldn't have died yet. I was just waiting for the final scene to be Kenji hugging Kanna and when it actually came to that, I was pretty ecstatic. Perfect ending in my book.
User avatar #1392 to #1391 - kotor (04/21/2014) [-]
20th CB and 21st are directly and I mean directly connected.
So you definitely had to read that..

20CB gets worse with each timeskip in my opinion. Especially the last one.
User avatar #1393 to #1392 - lijda (04/21/2014) [-]
Okay I just went ahead and finished 21st century boys, only 2 volumes anyways. Yeah it was definitely a good idea. This really was such a great story. It sort of was a coming of age story except told in a really unique way.

I didn't think the first time skip was that bad, but yeah the last timeskip was definitely the weakest arc.
User avatar #1394 to #1393 - kotor (04/21/2014) [-]
It's a very good manga nevertheless, even with the last timeskip

Would have done much better without "second Friend" deal for sure.

Some must listen:

or from the mangaka himself

Started Hunter x Hunter. Only the manga though because the anime is like 12,000 episodes. Anyway, pretty cool and stuff. Killua and Kurapika are badass side/main characters and Gon is the definition of a pure MC so far. Hisoka's hard-ons are pretty cool too I guess.

My computer time is limited though because my stepfather is a cunt m8. I only have 5 hours during weekend days and 3 during weekdays. And I have online classes and **** so that takes away time.

That's why torrenting is so hard for me now. Also the reason I can't torrent 123 episodes.

User avatar #1348 to #1346 - kotor (03/31/2014) [-]
Honestly, I like Kira the most.
Then there's Dio 2nd and Funny Valentine third.

User avatar #1350 to #1348 - sirchris (03/31/2014) [-]
Oh yeah Kira. I kind of forgot about him. Well I see what you mean, he was damn clever and was a legitimate villain who stuck it through to the end. Being able to act normal in front of others and not blow his cover until the end was good to. Plus the God Complex made him that much more evil. I just hate how Near found him out off some stupid mistake.
User avatar #1351 to #1350 - kotor (03/31/2014) [-]

I was referring to Jojo's Kira. ahahahaha, sorry but it's really funny. I was there with you until the "God Complex" and "Near" part. Then I lost it.

Kira is the main villain of Jojo's Part 4

otherwise, Jojo villains aren't even in my top 5 I think.
User avatar #1355 to #1352 - sirchris (03/31/2014) [-]

Well that's kind of embarrassing. I think Kira from Death Note is a good villain honestly but I was confused because I thought you put him above Dio for a minute. I haven't gotten to part 4 so I don't know Kira, when you said Kira I just assumed you meant DN.
User avatar #1357 to #1355 - kotor (03/31/2014) [-]
Yes, I realised you havent read part 4 and above.
Funny Valentine is another Jojo villain. Could have made the connection if you knew haha

I've seen it.
I'm not sure if I'll actually follow all the shows, but for now my plan-to-watch list would look like this:

Jojo (absolutely)
Mushishi 2 (absolutely)
Atelier Escha (doubt)
Break Blade (likely)
Captain Earth (definitely)
Gokukoku no Brynhildr (likely)
Chaika (likely-definitely)
Kenzen Robo Daimidaler (doubt)
M3 ~Sono Kuroki Tetsu~ (doubt)
Mahouka (for trolling purposes)
Ping Pong (dno, waiting to see people's reactions first)
Sidonia no Kishi (definitely)
Soredemo Sekai wa Utsukushii (doubt)

Is this the same one you have?

Jojo is an obvious yes
Gokukoku no Brynhilder (maybe, I got bored with the manga soo)
Hanamonogatari (yes)
Atlier Escha (yes)
Chaika (probably)
Isschukan (maybe)
Mahouka (yes same reason as you, it's another weird magic incest thing)
Mushishi 2 (yes, after I finish Mushishi 1)
Sidonia (yes)
Soredemo (I'll wait for others opinions first. Don't want another MMY)

yes, same chart

Mahouka will be plenty of fun and trolling all around

Inactivity happened.
