I like them both, they are just different. Both bring very different emotions for me. Johnny Cash's version makes me think of an old man reflecting on all his mistakes and regrets while nine inch nails feels like someone who hates who they have become. Plus the notion of start again is quite different between the two, for cash starting again isn't a possibility so its a futile dream while with nine inch nails it is something achievable but impossible because of the way he is.

I wanna like the Nine Inch Nails version better, but its got that static bit in the beginning. still good, but Cash's version is better.

I had to look it up to be sure, but Johnny Cash actually wrote the song for 9 inch nails in 1996, then released his own version of it in 2002. So it's kinnda his song.

I like Cash' version better, but got to admit, the original fits better here.
Johnny Cash' guitar has much warmer tone, while in this version it sounds a bit "darker" in certain riffs. Especially in the 4:47 part

Wasn't even that he just kinda liked Cash's version better, this entire quote of his really makes you feel for how much it ment to him:

I pop the video in, and wow... Tears welling, silence, goose-bumps... Wow. [I felt like] I just lost my girlfriend, because that song isn't mine anymore... It really made me think about how powerful music is as a medium and art form. I wrote some words and music in my bedroom as a way of staying sane, about a bleak and desperate place I was in, totally isolated and alone. [Somehow] that winds up reinterpreted by a music legend from a radically different era/genre and still retains sincerity and meaning — different, but every bit as pure

The funniest part is that Johnny Cash wrote the song for Nine Inch Nails to then later do a cover of it. Its kind of his song, but not legally at the same time.

No it's not.

Nine Inch Nails is one person just so you know. It's not really a band. Trent Reznor did say he liked Johnny Cash's version better though yes
