No you don't understand, immortality from a biological point.
As in, we would not be able to die of old age, that's all. Death from other sources still quite logically possible.

Thing is, I understand what you're saying, and I agree that our actions have a direct and indirect affect on the future, but even things such as what you say are not going to be remembered.

Cure cancer - 100 000 years from now, we inhabit the entire planet, probably more in our solar system, deep space ships probably sailing the cosmos towards other places to inhabit.

Do you think anyone would give a shit about who cured cancer?

Hell, that's just 100 000 years from now, what about 1 000 000 years from now? I'm quite sure our race isn't nearly as stupid as to undergo complete annihilation. At the very least, sleeper ships will be made to travel to other places in the universe in order to continue life if our solar system becomes uninhabitable.

Cancer schmancer. Beethoven, Mozart, none of us would be significant.

Sure, we've played our part but by then, we'd just be recycled into this planets matter, and eventually, when the Sun engulfs the Earth in it's expansion, our remnants will join it until it's eventual mitigation into a white dwarf, and from there, until it completely burns out along with us, and leaves behind cosmic dust to float around until the end of existence.

And it pains me that I am aware of this. Every day I wish I had never been born, came into existence, so that I may never have experienced the wonder of life and consciousness. I remember the first time I became aware of myself. I thought I was god, I thought me being aware of myself was a sign that I am a supreme being.

How I hate that dreadful moment now.

Think of it this way. Cavemen, Neanderthals, Homo erectus, we still study those today. We are still interested in their culture. They're not forgotten, and we still have much to learn about them. We have an almost unlimited amount of sources to rely on for equally unlimited knowledge. I say that if you don't want to be forgotten, then you should really strive to do something great with your life. You know the multiverse theory?
Think about it this way; it may be true, or it may not be true. Let's say it is; that means that there's a universe out there for every decision you could've made, and every consequence for it. It's your job to think really hard on it, and make your universe what you want it to be. Only you can decide what the best course of action for your life is. We remember and study other beings from eras far before ours, and remember individuals from ancient times because of their greatness. Your records will never be destroyed, either. We have the internet to make sure of that. Be glad you weren't born before the 1700s, because even in the 1900s there are records that you can't find of certain people. Today, your legacy will always be there.

I'm not sure of what else to say, but live this life as if it were created just for you. Live it in the way that makes you happy, whether it be sitting on your ass, eating food and browsing FJ, or if it means going out and saving people. If you feel your life is unfulfilled, well... you still have many years to change that.

If no one who ever existed will ever matter in the grand scheme, then why is it important? Quit acting like being rememberd is the most important thing. Instead, go do something worth being remembered for. Make people happy, help people. If you are so worried about dissapearing in 80 years, then the last thing you should be doing is worrying yourself over it! You should be trying to fill your small exsistance to the fullest. Travel the world, hike in the mountains and i promise you, life and death wont seem so scary anymore.

Well, see, the thing is, that very fact of embracing it, is making me consider everything worthless..

Like, everything I do is just pointless, I'll sing into nothingness with my death, and my life had no meaning to myself the moment I die, that aside, even if life had meaning to people around me, what about the future...

Sure, my children will remember me, their children too, but give it some few hundred years, and I'm gone.

Nowhere, I am not alive, I am not documented anywhere anymore, my body is decayed, everyone who ever knew me is also dead.

So what is the point in trying to be active and engage in whatever, if it's just going to be reduced to nothingness in the end.

I mean, I could sit in my chair on infusion life sustain for 80 years, as opposed to living a regular life, and the moment I die, it wouldn't have made a difference..

What amazes me most, is the huge lack of interest in the human race to fix this issue.

Yes, we are currently unable to create immortality, but I'm sure we're pretty damn close.

I guess, in 10-20 years, if every country in the world funded one big joined project, immortality, or at least, extreme life prolongation would be possible...

Why do people still prioritise shit like medication and cures to diseases... That's only short term..

ughhhh.... this is really painful...

my heart rate is enormous I've been taking some pills to calm me down but i can't just take them more and more... I'll overdose or some shit...
#13 - karidagur (11/03/2013) [-]
opposite to what I said before you still have the chaos theory, every little thing you do will eventually have a huge effect on the earth, if not the universe.

sure you wont be remembered, that is unless you do something to be remembered by, cure cancer, end world hunger, if nothing else single handedly blow up the white house (americans are good at remember that sorta shit)

In the end, life is only meaningless if you make it that way. Stop sitting on your ass and do some good, do something that you will be remembered by, give your life meaning.

(also immortality is bad, if you cant die you will always end up stuck somewhere til the end of time and also the earth would be overpopulated like crazy. Thats why I dont think we should end world hunger)
