I just miss FunOrb. Too bad they just abandoned it without any news. Then there was the whole "evolution of combat" thing. I just gave up after that point.

A eats B, B eats C. For extra measure, C eats D and E, and B eats C and D.

There are abundant amounts of B.

A eats B, and since there are lots of B, population of A increases.

since there are so many A, population of B starts to decrease.

However the lag time of A population means even if there are less of B A will still increase for the time being, usually 1 or 2 generation.

B nearly goes extinct. as this happens, since B is the only one eating C, population of C explodes.

insane amounts of C eating E and D nearly makes both extinct.

There are no more E and D. C dies. Since C dies, B dies. And since B died, A died.

this is biology. One year of Biology 104 in UBC taught me this simple fact and and never found clubbing seal inhumane.

However we shouldn't club it. We should shoot it. Clubbing often fails to kill them instantly and can cause seals great pain. Shooting usually kills them cleanly and painlessly. But then again, Shooting uses much more resource, leaves much more garbage, and selling seals with gaping hole isn't very good for business.

and it's fucking cultural, leave it or we take your maple syrup supplies away.

it is counter intuitive, but if you dont cull the lot of them, then they eat all the fish and all starve. ironically, the laws put in place to protect seals in canada killed more seals than any clan of eskimos ever did. they went from sort of endangered to nearly extinct in half a decade
#68 - anon (07/30/2016) [-]
This is bullshit. They will not eat all the fish. Worst case scenario is they will eat so many of the fish that there will not be enough to go around, and so a lot of the seals will starve to death. For one species to completely eat another out of existence is impossible. But before the seal population reaches its breaking point, there will be so many that their natural predators will have a feast and they will multiply uncontrollably. There is thus a lower limit (fish) and upper limit (predators) to their numbers. This balance has existed long before humans started fucking with everything and applied to all living things; we would have fallen victims to it ourselves if we hadn't learned how to cultivate crops.

Of course, all that assumes that humans (Canadians, natives, or whoever) didn't drive a species into extinction or introduce a new, invasive species. Messing with the natural order of things and then trying to perform damage control can lead to having to do things such as clubbing seals. At that point you can just stop and admit you fucked up, or if another species is responsible let nature run its course.

But that's just a natural boom bust cycle. Lots of fish = lots of seals = fish numbers drop = seal numbers eventually drop = fish now come back = seals eventually come back. Rinse and repeat forever.

That's just nature yo

Close.

The seals carry a parasite that will kill the fish if they eat seal crap.
Too many seals means there is far more crap.
The fish are the target of the parasite but they need the seal digestive track to complete the cycle.

Might be us killing too many shark whales that ate them said seals.
#52 - masterofopinions (07/29/2016) [-]
well seals are pretty dumb and they always come back to the same place they were born like turtles, so for many a century native tribes regularly culled the seals in these ancestral grounds as their most consistent source of food. they basically influenced the evolution of their gestation period to unsustainable levels, but of course we made sure to learn it the hard way.

Meaning we should eat more seals.
