I hate to be a buzzkill.. But if you rely on the content editor, you could always click to leave a comment.. Click the button for the editor.. Save it to your desktop and then upload it.

It's an extra two steps, but if you need it...

who exactly is "they"?
#17 - thismustbeseen (09/25/2014) [-]
Timber Engineer here.

That would make it easier for us, but a lot less efficient for the tree. The circular cross section has the most bending resistance per unit area. Actually, a pipe would work even better, but it would be impossible to grow a hollow tree.

We've actually become pretty good at getting the most from frees. There is no waste in the process. The scrap bits around the outside are made into stuff like OSB, particle board and paper products.

can i ask how telephone poles are made? Is it just one tree or do they manage to stick a few together somehow
#30 - thismustbeseen (09/26/2014) [-]
Given that telephone poles are everywhere, and aren't really subjected to that much load, you can be sure almost all of them are made from one continuous log of softwood, just for the sake of cost.
User avatar #31 - thehumor (09/26/2014) [-]
does that mean only certain kinds of trees will work?

and even then, do they have to fit specific height and width requirements?
#32 - thismustbeseen (09/26/2014) [-]
To the first bit - it's pretty much always softwood in all construction, just because the trees are strait. I couldn't tell you anything more specific, because what species are used depends on region and costs. For example, here in eastern Canada it's usually SPF.

To the second bit - Height - I'm pretty sure they do, but that's a matter for the electrical people, like, the pole has to be high enough to clear all traffic, obstructions and such. Width - as in the diameter of the log? - I'm sure it could be designed, but again there's probably some kind of standard size that's a good balance between the needed strength, the cost of the wood, and cost of the installation. ... just speculating.

but wait... did you really just ask me about rules on how large telephone poles are? Really?

Not to toot my own horn here, but Timber is a pretty awesome building material all things considered.

Compared with steel, masonry, and concrete: it's cheaper, lighter, easier to cut, faster to assemble, completely renewable, stronger per unit weight, and environmentally sustainable. There's a reason why all our homes are built from it.

It's only disadvantages are less overall strength and increased fire risk.
User avatar #27 - enemyoftrn (09/25/2014) [-]
This why i like fj community. We can go discussing hentai, jlaw boob to lumber and timber usage efficiency.
#25 - arstya (09/25/2014) [-]
And besides the physical strength of wood, it can look ridiculously sexy when used correctly.

Just looking at this thing makes me want to masturbate awkwardly in an art museum.

Didnt they do that with melons in japan
User avatar #8 - carbohydrates (09/24/2014) [-]
They mostly did square melons because "Fuck it, why not?".
Also because the uniqueness lets them have a horrible markup, as in, they're $200/each.
Plus, they're harvested before they're ripe... Resulting in either a very bland flavor, or being outright bitter.
User avatar #15 - mrtallguy (09/25/2014) [-]
Well at first the melons were made square for shipping costs. Then it turned into a fad and they marked up prices.

Hello! I was wondering, if you no longer collect items, then those FJ points are useless to you. I collect items however, and was wondering whether you'd be willing to donate your unused items and FJ points to me in a trade? I will be putting to them good use for umm... science? Thanks :D
