How do you find out if you have them and how do you treat them?

Many people with pinworms don't have symptoms and don't know that they're infected. When symptoms occur, the most common ones are:
- Itching around the anus.
- Restless sleep, because itching is often worse at night.
Pinworms can be annoying. But they don't carry disease, and they rarely cause serious health problems.
To find out if you have pinworms, your doctor will ask about your past health and check the skin around your anus. [1]

You can treat pinworms with over-the-counter or prescription medicine that kills the worms. Albendazole [3] or Mebendazole [4] is the first-line treatment of Enterobius Vermicularis infection. Pyrantel Pamoate [5] is an alternative [2].

My ass occasionally itches. It's not that bad and it's not everyday. And it's never kept me up. So I'm guessing I should be concerned. Are there any negative effects of taking the medications if you don't have the worms?

They do have side-effects, which are listed on Wikipedia, including abdominal pain, temporary hair loss, persistent sore throat, severe headache, seizures, vision problems, yellowing eyes or skin, acute liver failure, allergic reactions, marrow suppression, or aplastic anemia [1] which may be permanent.

Pyrantel Pamoate seems to be the safest because it is poorly absorbed by the host's intestine, though it is a Pregnancy category C drug in humans [2].

That said, an occasionally itchy anus probably just means you're not wiping your butt well enough. After wiping your butt, wet your toilet paper and continue wiping until there is no more brown on the tissue at all. Avoid overly-soft tissue. Cheap durable toilet paper is often more effective. Good luck with your anus!

Well then... This is different from the gun and censorship mentions I get.

Nah, I'm definitely wiping enough. I wipe once or twice with toilet paper, then switch to baby wipes after that until there is no brown, then I wipe one more time with a baby wipe just to be sure. Sometimes I even use a syringe that I use to spray my ass with water before I use the baby wipes. Also, I have a high fiber diet and I shave around my asshole. So yeah, my ass is about as clean as humanly possible.

I wonder if shaving your butt could cause itching. I would only shave if a rash has already developed.

I assume you've done research already, so I'll just add this for informational purposes. There are a number of possible causes for anal itching besides pinworms [1].

On the topic of parasites, papaya seeds are also effective at eliminating them. I believe they kill over a hundred different species, but you need to eat at least 20 seeds per day for 5 days to be effective. Cover with honey to increase palatability. There are also other natural alternatives, but don't assume natural means safe.
