Been looking for a portable headphone amp, and came across this one.

Looks like a load of ******** but they have some positive ass reviews. At least the reps don't know **** what they are talking about.

#2957 to #2956 - iyr (04/13/2016) [-]
I won't talk about the analog hardware that does the actual amplification since you probably know a lot more about that than I do, but I can talk about the algorithm part.

Dunno much about portable amps, but after reading a bunch of articles about it, the secret sauce seems to be in the algorithms that do some thing to the audio stream passing through it. I wasn't able to find any specifics on what the algorithms actually do to the sound since its chief engineer claims "algorithms" don't make for good marketing. Most likely smooths out static from interference and/or interpolate and extrapolate missing data from lossy formats, but I have no clue.
Also not clear; whether or not the "algorithms" are implemented in software on a microcontroller or asic (hardware).
If it's software on a microcontroller, there may be a slight, but noticeable, delay in its output. That wouldn't be a problem for music, but may make videos slightly out of sync with audio (maybe).
On a side note, if it's software based, it's probably using a common inexpensive microcontroller like an Atmel ATMega, Arm Cortex m#, or something Nuvoton, in which case it may be possible to get a rom dump off one of these and essentially pirate the firmware running the secret sauce algorithms. I've been dicking around with Arduino and other microcontroller dev boards lately, so that stuff really interests me I'd love to get one and crack it open to see what makes it tick, but not at 99$, I could get eight entrees of genuine Tibetan dumplings for that price.

If it's hardware, then the price tag seems justifiable since asics are by nature expensive to design and produce.

A lot of reputable sites in the tech space seem to hold it in a good light, so it could actually be a very decent product if you cant feng shui the buzzword marketing. Seems like it could be a really good product if you're able to demo it at a retail store just to be sure.

I also am kinda put off by the marketing, they provide no specs what so ever, neither does any site they're reviewed on and they still get fairly good reviews. It is really pricey when compared to the major competition like asus and creative and stuff.

Probably not an option to demo it.
#2959 to #2958 - iyr (04/13/2016) [-]
Like I said, you probably know a lot more about amps than I do.

Also, since the boomstick uses an internal battery to power itself rather than being powered directly off the phone's usb port, the voltage regulator for the digital circuitry may introduce em noise that degrades (albeit very slightly) the audio quality as opposed to a portable amp that is powered off the phone's usb port and its power regulator by proxy. A lady that designs a lot of microcontroller development boards has a youtube channel and at one point she discussed what a bad idea it was to put wireless or analog circuitry near a board's voltage regulator if you want to avoid unnecessary em noise.
#2960 to #2959 - kaitora ONLINE (04/13/2016) [-]
Yeah I know most of the mobile amps I've used with batteries had horrible noise in them. But you never know, none was mentioned in the reviews.
#2961 to #2960 - iyr (04/13/2016) [-]
hmm. . .
Well there are three possibilities:
-The batt generates some noise that nobody seems to have mentioned, even professionally written articles.
-The analog circuitry is sufficiently shielded from the voltage regulator (hard to due in a really small form factor, but not impossible).
-The algorithms can compensate for the noise generated.

#2963 to #2962 - iyr (04/13/2016) [-]
I get that they're trying to appeal to mass market, the chief engineer himself claiming only 4% of consumers take great care to have a good audio experience, but the least they could do is spill some technical details.

Oh well.

I can see your point. My brother isn't too fond of it either, but he also doesn't like the boomy voices in opera. It's kinda sorta barely similar.

I kinda thought a lot of radio stations in GTAIV had crap music, but it's been years since I've played it. That was also on ps3 where you couldn't play your own music over games like you could with xbox or pc. It was a bit of a let down since the intro music was really good.

Similar deal with Ace combat 6, great main theme, so-so everything else.

From the few mailing lists I've read, the com port issue is sometimes caused by the windows 10 driver failing to maintain a certain baud rate, could be something else entirely though. my plight of racing games:
rally is always favorite gamemode
rally cars are ugly match-boxes with more stickers on 'em than an inner-city light pole
get even uglier splattered with mud, dust, leaves and the blood of local fauna that wandered on the track

Most of the beautifully designed, masterly engineered, state-of-the-art hyper-limited hyper-cars just end up sitting in inventory/garage looking pretty.

Nice mixing job btw.
#2921 to #2920 - kaitora ONLINE (11/19/2015) [-]
Rally is nice, but I mostly love drifting and circuit. Drifting is a horrible thing to love since most racing games have that "assisted sick ass be your own Ken Block" drifting physics model where you can do epic manjis in a stock FWD civic playing drift mode but can't get the tires slip with a clutch drop in races. That's why I really only play Assetto Corsa these days. It's still fun to play Dirt showdown and the crew once in a while.

Rally cars are ******* sick yo, **** you.

The new trailer really lacks the grace that Gran Turismo cinematics have always had. The music in GT has always given it that "gentleman's simcade" feel, along with the wonderful menu music.

Gran Turismo 4 - Introduction - Europe - PS2

To be fair, even with an accurate newtonian physics engine, it can be really difficult for a game studio to realistically model a huge variety of cars with different weight-distributions, torque, tires, track surfaces, etc, etc, etc. . .
It's mainly the reason most hardcore flight-sims focus solely on one aircraft; it takes so much time and effort just to model one vehicle accurately let alone dozens to hundreds so corners had to be cut har in physical accuracy so the game would be practical.

Never said they weren't cool, just ugly. No other kind of racing car can take so much of a beating and finish a race in (mostly) one piece. Unlike F1's which are so precisely engineered if you look at them the wrong way a component would need replacement.

That video left out the best part of the song.
