OH. MY. FUCKING. GOD.

THIS IS THE FORTH FUCKING TIME WRITING THIS FUCKING POST BECAUSE THE LAST COUPLE OF TIMES I TRIED WRITING ON YOUR PROFILE OR REPLYING, MY CONNECTION DROPPED AND THE WHOLE DAMN POST IS GONE ON FUCKING PLUTO FOR ALL I KNOW.
FFS COMCAST.
I've had to resort to fucking writing out posts in fucking wordpad and saving them on the off chance my connection drops.
It's been fine for the past week or so, but I also had final exams, YIPPEE. And then my sister was over for Mother's Day weekend, so I also had family obligations.

ANYWAY.
LOTSA STUFF HAPPENED AND THINGS N' SHIT. Sorry for the wall of text

Finally got a new headphone amp; a SMSL sApII TPA6120A2. Surprisingly decent build quality and design for a Chinese product; brushed aluminum construction with gold plated headphone jack and rca inputs. The audio quality is about what you'd expect from 70usd amp so take from that what you will. It plays nicely with the Phono BDS, but I'll credit that to the DS' tweakable settings. It does seem to have a marginal volume bias towards the left channel that you don't really notice unless if you're explicitly looking for it.
I originally wanted a Pro-Ject Head box or a Silverstone EBO3, but it was just outside of budget. Oh Well, maybe some day.
I've mostly been using it to get most of my collection over to digital. I figure quality isn't a massive issue because 1) if I'm at home, I'll just listen to the vinyl and 2) if I'm not at home, I'm probably not using hardware good enough to make a significant audible difference.
That said, most of the preliminary recordings are easily 100MB+.
Here's one of the better recordings:
www.dropbox.com/s/54hzcvhueln2w1o/Soliquid%20-%20Lonesfield.zip
the password is 'derp'.
The reason why I'm sharing a password-protected zip rather than just the .flac is because Dropbox has been caught redhanded opening/reading files to see if they're copyrighted and sending ISPs notices if uses share links to copyright materials.

Also will be getting a lot of old hand-me-down vinyls over to digital as a favor for my mom since she'll be retiring soon. Got a bit to go through.

Newegg will be a sponsor of Formula Drift this year. Tried to shoot you a link a while ago, but comcast.
Here's all the coverage thus far:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=tQH0cNHDhrE&list=PL1a9Sneh2hcysUBO8CnYYu2tm0V5b8L-d
The anchor, Jenny, is a bit of a motornut, which some people find a little out of place that she works for a tech retailer whose primary audience is technophiles but she offers a lot of insight into automotive practices and culture when given the chance.
www.youtube.com/watch?v=KGQh6BqEyZ8&feature=player_detailpage#t=102

Did plenty of work on my server, finally running the software I originally wanted and not some shitty tunneling pseudo-dropbox. Remote downloading of whole folders to zip files actually seems to fucking work, yay. Generating static download links also works, so it will be a nice way to get around the dropbox shenanigans mentioned earlier.
Remote Streaming is still iffy. One of my goals is to be able to give you and other friends complete read-only access to my music collection with the ability to browse, stream, and download whatever you like.
So that said, try to go to the following link. If your browser spits out an error about untrusted SSL certificates, that's normal. I can't be arsed to pay a "trusted" organization for a signed certificate that expires in a year when I can just make and sign one myself. Also, I'm not using a version of SSL that's effected by the heartbleed bug.
You need to login to view this link
If you can't connect I have more work to do, else if you get a login page I can throw you some credentials.
Everything's preliminary atm, I'm hoping to make upgrades in the next few months when x99 is released.

Also, Silverstone has released a headphone stand made of damn-near solid aluminum. Hard to get in the states and a little bit pricy, but Silverstone has established a very good reputation for legendary build quality.
silverstonetek.com/product.php?pid=490&area=
It looks really nice, would definitely go with my other silverstone gear, but 100+usd for a honk of aluminum seems better well saved towards the appending launch of a lot of new computer tech in the coming months. FUCKING NOCTUA MAKING THE BEST DAMN COMPUTER FANS ON THE MARKET WITH A FUGLY ASS COLOR SAND-BROWN SCHEME ARE NOW GONNA RELEASE THE SAME FANS IN BLACK AND GREY. THEY COULD SELL THEM FOR DOUBLE THE PRICE AND PEOPLE WOULD BUY THEM ANYWAY BECAUSE THEY'RE DAMN. GOOD. FANS. ASLDKFJAALSKDF

So yeah, my sincerest apologies for not getting to ya sooner.

Still rockin' the beyers?

I think so. Dropbox's official reasoning was to able to make file previews in the web interface until some people who got warning letters from their isp were able to deduce that db was the only service tipping them off.

Recorded? Not much, just a couple of EPs.

'scuse you. While it's nice to see companies sponsor events and competitors related to their industry, more sponsors never hurts.
Besides, Newegg has really been expanding its automotive offerings in recent years; they're sill mostly a tech e-tailer though.

That's good.

Sometimes I wish I had a 3D printer so I could design and make my own stand (among other things), to have a completely unique one-of-a-kind stand that's distinctly personal.

Pilot store, was open for a year, not good enough. No store no more, I'm working in an electronics store again. We didn't have Beyerdynamic in our selection, though we could get it of course. We had HifiMan as our main brand and another chain has Beyerdynamic. The main point of representing one major brand is that when we bought beyerdynamics, we sold them at 25-35% profit. For HifiMan it was 45% and 55% for accessories.

One thing I hate about household electronics. They have no steady profit margins, even inside one brand, and one product line there are big differences. It's very redundant and lowers profits. Some products are sold on minus or 0 profit... Common practice to mock products to customers, that have 0 or less profit. Also telling people we can't get it even though we can because it would just be so stupid to sell it. In the Hi-Fi industry, you pick a brand and they have one number that you have to remember, maybe another one for their accessories... Not to mention that if you can manage to sell a fridge on 20% profit you are a salesgod merchantlord, you give a 10% discount on a pair of speakers and you get 35% profit. Literally every store's list prices are the same so if you don't get a personal quote, you have no treshold for supporting your local dealer.

Just a little.

The flight sims at my old uni had the simulator accuracy and cockpits down to a tee, but my then roommate (who was studying piloting) told me the horrendous graphics really ruined the immersion. He could learn the procedures and dynamics, but it could've felt more real, or so he says.

Ah, I see, no problem.

Eh, the GT-R is the most feasible purchase for a future career. Would be nice to outtake jackasses in their SUVs on the highway when they need to learn that it is never okay for an SUV to be in the left lane then proceed to drive the speed limit.fucking cunts.

Learn some'in new everyday.

Ah. Well at least it has a stick for the time being till you upgrade the paddles.

If CH Products ever made a wheel, it would probably be one ugly motherfucker if not super-accurate with legendary build construction designed to last forever.
Thrustmaster's stuff has been alright though.

Yeah, should be here the 13th at the latest.
The Leap is a little usb device you put on your desktop to track finger movements, kinda like a mini kinect. It can be used for a variety of things like gaming or emulating a touchscreen monitor without having to buy a touchscreen monitor.

Got L4D2 while it was free and that's about it. None of the games I wanted had any compelling sales. (%20 off a 50usd title at the most). Though I have bought some content for TF2. Weirdly enough, I applied a kit to a knife in-game and now whenever I use it, it crashes a few friends' clients. My knife is 2swag4them.

Glad that suv's never got popular here. We have estates... estates everywhere. Mercs, audi's, anything, and they're all white. A GT-R would be ridiculously priced here.

The paddles are ok, though I'm tempted to tweak.

I now wish they did. Dreaming the shit out of the Thrustie T500RS and maybe a Fanatec Clubsport switcher. Fanatec's wheels could be nice too though.

Oh, sounds awesome. What do you use it for? How much does one cost?

Lol... I got a lot of games and my downloads are still clogging my internets.

Most Californians drive them after experience the trauma of a first winter when their little priuses can't do shit in snow so think it's a better idea to get a lumbering SUV than to get new tires.
People who actually own SUVs for their intended purpose (which is about %15) don't drive like they're in the indi 500.

The GT-R is only 100k usd here. Pretty darn good considering it can hold it's own against other cars priced several times more than the GT-R.

Well the obvious thing you need to do is attach fuzzy dice to them. Fuzzy dice always make you drive more fasterer.

Never heard of Fanatec; the switcher does look like it could be crazy customizable though.

They're about 65~80usd. It's the first generation of the product so tracking and app support is a little iffy, but it's promising. Useful for operating the computer if you don't want to get your keyboard/mouse dirty when snacking on munchies.

Sport Utility Vehicle. My mom has a friend who loves to do tons of outdoorsy stuff. Minivans oft don't have the hp to haul a boat or a trailer on mountain roads and sometimes lack even the mounts to strap bikes or kayaks to the top. A properly designed SUV will go offroad anyway while also being street legal comfortable to drive during other times of the year.

Nowadays, uppermiddle class people will drive them just to be imposing and never take them off solid pavement once.

Depends. 100k was approximate, all about location where you decide to buy. Still dirt cheap for performance you get out it.

You know why?

Was looking for wheels in class again since I had nothing to do, game was in suggestions, the speshjul edishun was only 30€ so I checked the desc. and found out I was entitled to getting a free keychain. Been looking for something cool to put in muh car keys... Keychains are just one of those things that keep appearing for no apparent reason and when you need one, even the worst don't exist.

I am a victim of freebies.

I was thinking the same thing when I got my car; keychains bloody everywhere until you need one, ended up using an old mounting bracket for a CPU waterblock on the spare and a dragon emblem from Kyoto on the primary.
You'll have to send a pic of it.

Thought I replied to this one already...

You've been to Kyoto? I want to go there some day too. I shall, will probably ship at the end of next week since it's a bit of a mailing ruckus over here...

There's this record store that uses a system where when you buy shit for 17€, you get a stamp, 10 stamps is 17€ to use. Especially when you're really close to getting 10 stamps you usually get incented to buy something extra just to get the discount. Same was with this army surplus store I used to use a lot when I was doing airsoft, when you ordered for over 100€, you got a free product for like 10€, which was a pretty good of a deal since a completely usable jacket might have been 5€.

Lots of historical temples in and around Kyoto with all sorts of sights and designs. Prolly one of the best cities in Japan to visit if you're interested in learning about their pre-1900 culture and history.

Yeah, lots of stores here have similar stuff too. Some grocers have incentive programs where for every ten dollars you spend you get a stamp and if you get fifteen stamps you can a free set "expensive designer" play-settings or decent cutlery.

Got my car back yesterday. The brand new headlights are clearer and brighter than the previous ones which had been buffed with the bulbs replaced. Everything's fixed 'cept a small crack in the front bumper that wasn't worth repairing.
In lieu of the accident, my mom has decided to buy me a nice set of studded snow-tires that will be my christmas present. Really grateful for it, proper tires make a night-and-day difference.

I'd like to go to Japan with a car or a bike because the driving roads look so orgasmic.

Cools, just had to change one bulb to my car. Funny how you can spend even 30€ on one damn H7 bulb when 5€ is good enough. You don't have to use snow tyres in 'Murica? Here they're mandatory for the winter, spikes are optional, I have them though.
#2723 to #2722 - iyr ONLINE (12/07/2013) [-]
The hiking there is alright, but they use a lot of public transport to get around. Lot like the germans afaik.

Pretty much.
It's not mandatory in any state that I know of (it might be in Alaska), though states near the Rocky Mountains it's practically common sense to have a decent set of snow-tires if you can afford it, studded tires are a bonus. Some states do have laws for commercial vehicles though, wouldn't want a eighteen-wheeler loosing traction on mountain roads.
Most cars sold near the rockies are just equipped with all season tires, elsewhere it's just summer or wet-road tires.
Since some areas of the US only see a few inches of snow a year for a few days, it's not worth it for towns to invest in a fleet of snow plows or other infrastructure, so they just close down for such mundane weather. The locals wouldn't really be equipped to deal with it either.

Will have to see when I get em back.
Not sure what the actual legal minimums are. Too lazy to look it up. Here, the rule of thumb is less than 3mm, the tires should be replaced, year round. Actually, it's put a US penny upside down in the treads, if you can see the top of the president's head the tires should be replaced. About 3mm.

Still though.
You can't apply early? Here, you can apply pretty early, even if you don't meet the min requirements at the time of application if you show you're on your way to completing them you can get accepted and register upon doing so.

on an unrelated topic (you don't have to watch all of it, just this tid-bit about the cables):

I actually like the brownish gray rather than most of the colours you normally see...

I've heard cable differences in the 6000€ range, which was kind of "impressive" because I've always been really pessimistic about it. The most difference comes when you hop over the 50€/meter range and double it. I think the idea there was the retarded review though. We gotta remember though, it's someone's hobby, I don't really have a reason to laugh if they're spending their own earned money, feeding the economy and buying nothing too much with a lot of money.

False alarm on that upper post.

Me asking you if you have a good file of Hybrid's instrumental "Until Tomorrow", before I checked my library... of course you've given it to me.

Ois.
Sorry for late reply (again), US holiday; the one where we stuff our faces with food then watch TV, basically how americans live everyday, but as a national holiday.

Car cabins (or steering controls more specifically) are often used as an anology for UI design in software, because of the amount of attention to detail and priority of functions that goes into the design.

Funnily enough now that you reply I'm watching the top gear review of the older CCX.

Aaaaand once again there's Hybrid in this show.

Figures.

Corolla's in the body shop, should be getting it back late next week hopefully.
Got some advice from samio on how to make star-scapes, been experimenting with that. Not much else.

Agera R is sexier though. The CCX was the only car that was ever crashed in top gear.

How much will it cost you? Who's Samio and what are star-scapes...?

Nothing too much. Got a new test on monday, hoping to get it rite this time. On an unrelated note, there has been an odd spike in sales of record players... wonder if it's the winter and people spending more time inside or what.

Perhaps, but the furai you could practically sex.

Initial estimate was two grand. Made a bet with a friend that whomever was closer to guessing the correct cost of repair gets a free lunch. So far I'm winning.

Samio's the guy who makes comics about the solar system where all of the planets are personified. Think polandball, but with celestial bodies and well-drawn.
This one is my favorite:

Try not to get urself killed this time.

Maybe. Saw some vinyl players a store the other day for about fifty usd, with "minimalist design" and fake wood accents. Looked like they were trying to appeal to ultra-hipstars, but it was interesting because I hadn't seen new players sold in any brick-and-mortar store for almost a decade.

I guess since it comes in many different colors write before the holiday season; people picking them up as gifts. Not like many others don't come in varying colors though.
I dunno, don't have enough experience in that kind of retail.

Sounds like a bunch of electronic music thrown in a blender then poured through a filter to make a melody of sorts.

Rega, Oracle and Pro-Ject do colours. Others don't use acryl that much and rely on more complex and hefty builds of wood, glass and metals.

Pic is the Oracle paris, uses a Pro-Ject tonearm.

And it's fucking amazing innit?

I don't mind acrylics if it's not the cheap stuff that cracks or scratch easily. Glass and metal players definitely look good, my uncle had an old tempered glass player that he was trying to find a proprietary arm for. Some brushed aluminums stain though.
Wood makes me nervous because it tends to crack and splinter over time if it's not in a stable climate. Really good woods coated with excellent protective varnishes are pretty expensive though.
That said, I wouldn't mind a player made from Brazilian Rosewood.

How bout a Thorens Concrete?

The amount of lacquer and impregnants you'll find on anything wooden in hi-fi is usually nuts, measured one speaker having a nice 7mm coat of lacquer on its back once. The wooden ones I've seen have usually been in excellent condition and are being taken excellent care of.

Why does that exist?
Why does that need to exist?

Figured as much. Dunno about you, but I don't intend on replacing my player anytime soon.
The few people I've met that listen to vinyls pick a player and stick with it for quite a while. Somewhat of a little culture shock coming from a computers background were parts get replaced and renewed every few months to few years, much less few decades.

People will always go "extreme" in eliminating problems, and this problem is a real one, called "resonation".

Well, it's not like there are constantly any actual new technologies developed in the hi-fi field... especially analog audio. I'm gonna update my phonostage next, than maybe the player.

But concrete of all materials? Why not solid stainless steel? Or magnesium?
I mean, concrete would probably be the cheapest, but I'd assume anyone willing to go that far would be willing to spend a little extra coin.

Even though, some parts change little over time, like coolers, chassis', and power supplies yet people still insist on replacing those every couple of years.
Just a different mentality I guess.
#2717 to #2716 - kaitora (12/01/2013) [-]
But the real question is, why not?

Just a completely different industry.
