No, they aren't fine. If they are not mated and don't have the implant/jill jab/spay, they continue to produce excess estrogen. High levels of estrogen causes depression of bone marrow, where I'm sure you know blood cells are made. This results in a conditions known as aplastic anemia, which is fatal.

From what I understand, they're only fine without mating during heat with human intervention.

Of course, in nature they'd be getting their little ferret pussies slammed all day long, so it's human intervention denying them sex in the first place.
