I'm not altering it, I sais 'ideally'. Meaning in an ideal situation.
And they can be mirrored perfectly. Take away all the practical issues for a moment and imagine that instead of using the roman alphabet we used the international phonetic alphabet as the basis of our writing system.

We still can't all agree to not kill each other because of skin color, I doubt we'll ever unite in one alphabet. As much as I'd like for us to all unite under one language, or one dollar, it'll just probably never happen.

Of course it's informal, but that doesn't mean it's wrong. We're talking about tumblr posts here, not the presidential state of the union.

As for the issue of spelling, you don't understand what I'm getting at. Written language is a reflection of spoken language. Ideally this reflection should be perfect, an exact mirror image of what you would say. Some languages have achieved a very close approximation of this, like Finnish and, (so I'm told) Welsh. English, however, has a very old spelling system and has gone through some very radical shifts in pronunciation over time, leaving us with a spelling system where the sound 'ee' can be written as ee, ea, y, i, ie, ei, and probably a couple more that I can't come up with off the top of my head. It's a system that leads to a lot of confusion, even for native speakers (It takes a lot more time for native speakers of English to develop proper spelling then for native speakers of Finnish, some of them never even get around to it).
I'm not saying we should actually change spelling right now. There's a literal fuckton of practical issues with that, and overall it may be easier to just stick with a sub-par spelling system for now, but in an ideal world, every language would be written down in phonetics. It would remove a lot of confusion and make it easier to learn foreign languages, since all spelling systems would conform to the same rules.

"They're pronounced exactly the same and so they should ideally be spelled the same."- You, in your second comment. You're altering your argument.
And while yes, I do agree that spoken and written language should be mirrored, they really can't be perfectly, especially in the case of English. I'm not questioning Finnish, but at this point in society, where we have so many things in need of unique names, it's damn near impossible to have words that don't sound similar.

They could be spelled the same. It works for other languages. are you implying that written language is more than a reflection of spoken language?

And on literally, I suppose you think you're smarter than the folks over at merriam-webster online.

Usage Discussion of LITERALLY

Since some people take sense 2 to be the opposite of sense 1, it has been frequently criticized as a misuse. Instead, the use is pure hyperbole intended to gain emphasis, but it often appears in contexts where no additional emphasis is necessary.
User avatar #68 - icecubeslayer (01/19/2015) [-]
It's an informal, secondary definition, making it improper.
They're is a conjugation of two words, meaning that changing it's spelling would be fucking stupid. Their is a conjugated version of they used to show possession, so changing it would be stupid. And there is just it's own word, so changing it would be stupid.
Using your logic, or I'd might as well say "you are" logic, saying "I sea you by the see" would be acceptable, based only on the opinion that spelling shouldn't matter because they sound the same. Learning a language like that would be an absolute nightmare if that was official, and it would quickly be replaced.
And I absolutely do not claim English, nor any other language to be perfect and without exceptions to rules, or without stupid, seemingly unnecessary loopholes. But throwing basic rules of grammar and spelling away simply because 'things sound the same' is fucking ridiculous.

Is it maybe just cosmetic? I know some people have put a full auto marker on their AR-15s, but its just for show, it doesn't actually do anything. I also have a hard time believing that a reputable gun shop wouldn't know a gun is full auto. Maybe a pawn shop, but not an LGS.
