Hvacian literally just told us that the question was pronounced "Are you German for basketball?" so that's how it would have been written. Also, are you really saying that it is impossible for German to be a slang word for something else? You're just ignorant if you think it isn't easy for any word to become slang for something else. If I said "wow, calm down, don't get so German about it" then that word would easily be understood as "angry" or "upset."

Whoops, clearing up something I may have worded poorly.
If I'm not mistaken, the question actually spoken "Justin, uh, Beiber - sorry - is German for basketball. True or false?"
When I say Bieber heard a different question, I mean to say he understood the question to be different then what was being asked. He interpreted it as him being asked for an opinion of a sport in reference to it being 'german', so it sounded like it was a slang word. The interviewer's mishap at the start of the question likely put Bieber in that mindset, which carried over to how he read the card when it was then showed to him.
Unless the cue card was written "'Bieber' is German for basketball", thus the quotes making his name stand out instead of just being addressed, having it spoken to him or reading wouldn't make much of a difference.
Sorry for that confusion

Yes the guy that was asking Beiber the questions fucked the question up, the first time he got it right and afterwards he just repeated less and less of the question which would make anyone confused, his accent didn't help either.
Regardless of how he pronounced or misspoke the question, it would be written down correctly and Beiber read that yet still couldn't understand, I'm pretty sure that's due to him being an idiot.
