You really have to do your research on the game in question to see if its worth it. Look around for Lets Plays or something of the game in its current state, and treat it as paying the listed price for the game in that state, ask if you think that's a good deal. If it is? Go for it. If it's not? Then wait and see if it approves.

Well that's a good point, I mean I have bought a few games off Early Access before my old computer died on me, Kerbal, Prison Architect, to name some.

See above how Valve introduced new guidelines over it. That's how bad the backlash was for a while.

I'm kind of glad Valve did that. Thought I still feel Early Access is a waste of time as most games just it there now.

Basically. Sales, and thus revenue, trailed of, they reached the end of their budget for the game, so they weren't really able to work on it more. Meanwhile, all the income the company is getting was being directed at Broken Age and not any other project.

Simply put: Their investment in it was contingent on continuing to sell copies during Early Access.

In fact, it inspired a new set of guidelines from Valve, one of which was basically: "Be prepared to finish the game even if 0 copies sell during Early Access"

"Double Fine Adventure" got funded on the promise of Tim Schafer making an old school point and click adventure man.

Granted people blow it out of proportion a little. The funding wasn't for the game, people were buying into seeing their process of making a game from start to finish.

I'm not saying they didn't mismanage money, but a lot of people are like "How do you not finish a $400,000 game with $3 million!?" when really, they didn't start even budgeting the game until they had the $3 million, the kickstarter goal was more "Look, this is the absolute bare minimum we would need to make something like this."
