That is how it would work theoretically. When applied however, there are so man other factors that make this incorrect. There have been MANY times throughout history when a species goes extinct (going from extremely large populations to extinct) from depleting there own food supply. Yes, there are always other factors, but that is how nature works.

I am not caught up on the megalodon history, but you may be right. Marine paleontology is a bit of an obscure field, and I have never had a particular interest in big oceanic predators especially the ones that are just a larger version of the ones you can find on shark week
#205 - BloodyTurds (02/13/2014) [-]
humans being omnivores makes it virtually impossible for even us to deplete our food supply.. not saying we couldn't destroy it... (nuclear winter?) but I doubt we could fully deplete it otherwise... even if we eat 95% of animal species off the planet.. we would still have plants/wheat..
also 'your' theory fails when you factor in multiple predators, especially ones who eat a variety of fishes....
think about it this way:
lets say megalodon only eat large fish (excluding sharks)
lets say sharks eat large and small fish.
large fish eat only small fish
the large fish population would decrease because of megladons andsharks.
the small fish population would increase because of less large fish
shark and large fish populations would both increase because of small fish (lets assume sharks go after the easier meals IE medium/small fish, when available)
Now megladon populations swell because of the large fish populations, simultaneously the small fish populations drastically start to decrease because of the quantity of large fish and sharks.
now the large fish population is decimated because of all the megladons..
Currently there are: A lot of sharks, a lot of megladons, not alot of large or small fish
then the megladons start to die off in hunger.., but the sharks are mostly sustained because their ability to eat large and small fish... the sharks could either hunt the large fish to extinction, or to a point that lowers the megladon population enough that it collapses..
Note: I dont know anything specific about sharks/megladons eating habits though, and this is ofcourse a very brief example, the megladon population likely peaked and fell hundreds or thousands of times before it collapsed...

But by that same logic once the sharks start to overeat the large fish there won't be enough food for the sharks or megalodons so both species will begin to shrink, allowing large and small fish populations to grow again, making food for both the sharks and megalodons. See how equilibrium comes into play?
#233 - popkornking (02/13/2014) [-]
Good point, but we need to realize this works the other way as well, Megalodon were known to eat large whales which would have been unavailable - just as the small fish are to the megalodon - to the regular sharks, hence in the absence of large fish the megalodon would be sustained by whales.
#242 - BloodyTurds (02/13/2014) [-]
firstly as stated, this is a small example (Ive done no reasearch into the eating habbits of megladons.., or sharks in general)
though for arguments sake..
whales eat shrimp/krill right?, so they would not be directly effected by small fish populations... I believe they also give birth to few offspring?
have whales ever been common?
I assume megalodons had to eat quite often, and I don't see them finding a new whale every week.... once the other large fish went away..
#268 - popkornking (02/13/2014) [-]
Well who's to say finding a whale would be any more common than finding a large school of small fish? You would have to take into account that at a certain point the fish can no longer provide sufficient sustenance if they're too small which wouldn't be a problem with large animals that the megalodon alone could prey on. Also although sharks are mainly oppurtunistic hunters there is still a natural heirarchy between type two consumers (see lion vs. hyena) meaning that wherever it went the megalodon would recieve first rights on food sources.
#285 - BloodyTurds (02/13/2014) [-]
oh so sharks and megladons actually shared meals? I was not aware of that
when it comes to smaller fish, I doubt the megaladons would get any as it simply couldn't catch them. (its not about speed, its about maneuverability)
and as stated below this post (in post#260)
What do you think caused their extinction?
#260 - BloodyTurds (02/13/2014) [-]
Also lets look at it from a different perspective;
You agree that megalodons are now extinct?
and being an apex predator before the time of man, we can agree they weren't hunted to extinction?
What do you think is the most likely reason?
and I think I should mention 'critical mass' (the minimum number required before they are unable to find breeding partners to sustain the population)
Its not about every single megalodon starving to death. its about their numbers decreasing to the point that they cant find adequate breeding partners (I know many species are picky when it comes to breeding, though dont sharks just release sperm clouds?)
#302 - BloodyTurds (02/13/2014) [-]
noting their likely high metabolism (which requires more oxygen as well as food) that very well could be a large part of it...
doesnt less oxygen generally equate to shorter burst of speed/faster exhaustion? wouldn't that severely diminish their ability to catch prey?
so it still seems to me like at least a combination punch that knocked them out.. (as with most species)
the oxygen factor should show a linear decline in megladon levels up to the point of critical mass, whereas the prey exhaustion should have peaks and valleys......
I agree with you that they should have evolved to become smaller as time goes on, but I was under the belief that megladons were an evolutionary dead end, and regular sharks had split from the tree quite a while before they went extinct?
something like oxygen depletion gives plenty of time for evolution, but I dont believe it alone would drive anything to extinction....
