think about it this way,
If I was going to rob a bank and there was a paper sign telling people not to bring guns into said bank vs the one that doesn't have that sign in there, I'd rob the one without the no guns sign as there is a very little chance anybody has the firepower to defend oneself.
that's pretty much easy picking at that point if there is nobody to defend the fort.
I know it's not a fucking bank but it'd be pretty easy to load game cabinets onto a truck.
User avatar #83 - youngneil (07/27/2014) [-]
I don't understand why people are criticizing you. It's a solid point. If you had to choose between two places to rob, you would choose the one with less people pointing guns at you. Chances of success and not dying are higher.

Do you have any data to suggest that stores which prohibit firearms have a significantly higher chance of being robbed?
User avatar #125 - twofreegerbils (07/27/2014) [-]
I don't have the specific data you're asking for, but I can say this: Since 1950, all but two mass shootings (where 3 or more victims are involved) have been in a gun free zone. Gun free zones are targeted for these heinous acts because the psychopaths know that the victims won't be able to defend themselves.

The only time a gun free zone works is in a place like a courthouse, where all the entrances are guarded and there are metal detectors. Otherwise, thinking that a piece of paper is going to keep the bad guys out is folly.

All but two. Think about that..
User avatar #203 - jukuku (07/28/2014) [-]
That doesn't prove that gun free zones are more open to shootings for that reason.

Schools often do not allow guns and for good reason.
#204 - twofreegerbils (07/28/2014) [-]
>99% of mass shootings occur in gun free zones
>c-correlation isn't causation
Ever wonder why nobody has shot up an NRA convention or a gun show?

This is real common sense stuff, if you can't see why gun free zones don't work without armed guards and metal detectors then I don't know what to tell you.
User avatar #218 - jukuku (07/28/2014) [-]
">99% of mass shootings occur in gun free zones
>c-correlation isn't causation "

>Implying the reason the gun free zones are shot up is because they're gun free
>Implying it isn't the fact that they want to shoot up schools which are mostly gun free

"100% OF PEOPLE THAT DIE, DIE ON LAND! THE LAND IS KILLING US!"

Seriously, that statistic is useless unless you can find a CONTROLLED STUDY which demonstrates that violence is higher in places of business or areas which have implemented a gun free zone than control locations which are very similar.
User avatar #221 - twofreegerbils (07/28/2014) [-]
Also, for school shooters, which make up a minority still within the mass shooting category, it's fairly obvious that the perpetrators are usually out for some sort of vendetta against their fellow students, or they are going for shock value for maximum media coverage.
#220 - twofreegerbils (07/28/2014) [-]
That's a false analogy. Basically everyone lives on dry land, so of course most people are going to die on dry land as well, because there is little other place where they can die. Also, what the hell? 100% of people die on land? You realize people die in the ocean? If you were going to shoot up a place, your location would almost have to be on dry land. However, you have a choice as to WHERE on that dry land you want to commit your massacre, and among the vast selection of locations, gun free zones are a distinct minority. Gun free zones make up a very small portion of our country, yet they host almost every mass shooting we see. You could say that it's because most densely populated areas are gun free zones, but even that is not true. Parades, city streets, train and subway stations, many many places of business. Gun free zones are vastly outnumbered regardless of the qualifiers you put on the locations, yet gun free zones are the site of choice for mass shooters. Why?

Okay, since you are in defense of gun free zones, would you care to explain how a piece of paper is going to stop a criminal with a gun, or even dissuade him? I might not be able to meet your standards for showing that they cause crime, can you meet mine demonstrating they prevent it? Where is your controlled study? Gun free zones don't even make sense intuitively. It's a false sense of security for everyone inside.

I take it you heard about the hospital shooting in Pennsylvania? Most all hospitals are gun free zones, that one included. Funny, because the signs did nothing to stop the crazed gunman from entering the building. Luckily, the signs also did not stop a doctor within the building who had disobeyed the hospital's no gun policy and carried a pistol anyways. Had the doctor chosen to obey the no gun policy, the casualties in the hospital could have been tremendous.

Would you put this sign outside of your home?
User avatar #222 - twofreegerbils (07/28/2014) [-]
To expand on the Pennsylvania hospital story so that hopefully you understand the implications:

That doctor was disobeying the no guns policy by carrying his weapon. If one of his coworkers had seen his gun, he would have almost certainly lost his job, and his name would have been mud. Other hospitals would have been unlikely to hire someone who they heard brought a weapon into a hospital against policy.

Luckily, he valued one thing above even his livelihood: His ability to protect himself and his loved ones. Because of that, the situation was contained, and the tragedy was minimized to only one death.

This is not usually the case. Not everyone is willing to risk their job or their reputation on the off chance they may need to use a gun. If gun free zones do one thing well, it's discouraging people like the Pennsylvania doctor from carrying their weapon. Thankfully, the Pennsylvania doctor was not discouraged. But how many people have been discouraged? How many concealed carry license holders were at the scene of a mass shooting, but unarmed, because of a sing that politely asked them to "leave it in the car"? How many mass shootings could have been prevented if it weren't for so-called "gun free zones"? Even the term gun free zone is bile in my mouth, because it is proven time and time again that they aren't gun free at all. Nothing has ever been more inappropriately named.

I am aware that debate rarely ever changes the mind of the opposing party. But I ask you to at least think about it. The next time you enter a "gun free zone", ask yourself if you actually feel safer for it. That's about all I have to say on the matter.

More people having guns makes it more likely for someone to get shot. If you are in a situation where a guy has a gun, if you also have a gun then you are more likely to get shot. Most robberies don't end in somebody getting killed, but when they do, "A good guy with a gun" is often involved.
Now I don't know how much you care about video games, but to me, somebody getting shot is much worse than somebody stealing video games. Not to mention the clerk could well have a gun, the sign is intended for customers.
In all likelihood though, the sign is a response to the idiots walking into stores with assault rifles in clear view because they have a "right" to scare the shit out of people with an open carry permit
User avatar #79 - dandamanzx (07/27/2014) [-]
Except that's not always exactly true. Take this story for example.

mobile.philly.com/news/?wss=%2Fphilly%2Fnews&id=268493192

Doctor with a gun stopped what would have easily become a mass shooting situation by putting the guy down. He wasn't supposed to be carrying his gun on the job, but if he hadn't, likely he and a lot more people would have died.
#86 - billburr (07/27/2014) [-]
It's not always the case, which I said that it makes it more likely. Anecdotes are great but there tends to be a lot of them to support both sides of an argument.
Even just owning a gun increases the likelihood that you will be shot by a remarkable amount.
User avatar #133 - dandamanzx (07/27/2014) [-]
Not really sure how that works unless you spout off about owning a gun, like douchebags who put signs on their lawns about it. Pretty much everyone who legally owns a gun (myself included) keeps them safely secured in their house, or if they carry, they conceal it so nobody is the wiser. Even retarded hoodrats know to conceal their guns under their shirts. So, not really sure how you've come to the conclusion that the magical presence of a gun suddenly makes you a murder magnet. Like twofreegerbils says, you're trying to present some sort of statistic with no source or evidence when your claim is absurd to begin with, so, mind telling us how you came to your conclusions?
#217 - billburr (07/28/2014) [-]
Statistically speaking it is a fact.
www.newscientist.com/article/dn17922-carrying-a-gun-increases-risk-of-getting-shot-and-killed.html#.U9W8-fldVEc
One reason is that if two people get into a fight and they both have guns, one of them might get shot. Somebody robs you and you reach for your gun, you might get shot. Spouse/friend/anyone is in your house and can find your gun, you might get shot. Obviously it's partially because criminals are more likely to carry guns but there is a significant correlation.
User avatar #219 - dandamanzx (07/28/2014) [-]
Rule #1 of any statistic though, correlation does not equal causation. When it comes to guns, there are so many other surrounding factors to that data, which are probably situational, like you referred to. If I could offer a suggestion, read the book "More Guns, Less Crime" by John Lott. He provides statistical evidence in droves to exactly the opposite of what that one study by University of Pennsylvania did. It's a good read. But to be fair, take any statistic with a pinch of scrutiny. Remember how an extremely flawed statistic got millions of people convinced (and are still convinced) that vaccines cause autism?
#225 - billburr (07/28/2014) [-]
But that statistic was well known (by rational or scientifically prudent people) to be false. And it had flawed methodology insofar as the guy twisted data so that he could say vaccines are bad.
The study I referred to has been repeated several times and is commonly accepted as a fact outside of the American right-wing. They took a few hundred shooting victims and then a few hundred people from the same area and controlled for age, race and gender. People who got shot were 4.5 times more likely to be carrying a gun than the control group from the same area.
Here's another article that makes specific reference to John Lott: www.theguardian.com/science/blog/2013/mar/25/guns-protection-national-rifle-association
It also references a study showing that if you carry a firearm you are more likely to think other people have one
User avatar #229 - dandamanzx (07/28/2014) [-]
This is the last reply I'm gonna make about this. For the last time, just because there is correlation does NOT mean there is causation. The control group is still so drastically flawed I have no idea how people calling themselves professionals even accept it. Sure, it controls for race, gender, age, and the presence of a gun. But does it control for the presence of drugs or alcohol? How about prior arrest record? How about situational, like did they think their lives were in danger? Premeditation? Gang related activity? You can't come to conclusions about gun violence by pointing and yelling "CAUSE DA STATISTIC SEZ SO" because gun violence is an extremely complicated issue. Does carrying a gun make me more likely to get shot? Hell I don't know, and I don't give a damn. But does it make me more able to defend myself against a threat than if I didn't carry a gun? You bet your ass it does, and that's what I'm concerned about.. And I can back that up with just as many "statistics" as you can. *drops microphone*
#231 - billburr (07/28/2014) [-]
But I just saw that you said you don't care if carrying a gun makes you more likely to get shot, which is what I thought we were talking about.
So feel free to not respond but know that you haven't given much support to the "guns make you safer" argument. It does sound like a reasonable way for things to be, but when you look at the statistics it just doesn't pan out that way
#233 - billburr (07/28/2014) [-]
What makes you think I'm trying to start a culture war? I said that having a gun makes you more likely to get shot, then I gave some stats to support that, and then I gave some reasons why it might be true.
Where does this anger come from?
I understand that guns are much more of a cultural thing in the US than here (Canada) but to me, it is a completely unemotional issue. It's interesting that guns make you more likely to get shot, but maybe that's not a compelling argument to you and that's cool too. I know lot's of people with guns and they do use them for hunting and tend to practice good gun control. That said my neighbor lost a kid because somebody left a gun lying around in their shed.
And it's great that crime went down in the US during that period. As you said, correlation does not imply causation but it is interesting that while gun sales went up, gun violence went down. But again, what I said was that owning a gun increases the chances that you are shot.
#230 - billburr (07/28/2014) [-]
Correlation does not imply causation but anti-correlation might indicate that guns don't make you as safe as you think. And other than a book which I obviously am not going to read before replying to your comment, have you offered any statistics supporting your claim? Reasoning is great but statistical evidence is better and I have not seen any.

The study is widely cited and to reiterate again, it is only contested by the right-wing in the united states. Do you think your country is that unique? Do you think that you are right and everyone else is wrong? Is it a coincidence that you have so many guns, so little gun-control, and so much gun violence? Why is the US the worst in the developed world I know the Swiss have guns too but they're rifles, not handguns, and the ammo is tightly controlled

Here's another study: www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJM199310073291506
It shows that a gun in your home is more likely to be used in domestic violence, an accident, or a suicide than it is to protect you.
User avatar #127 - twofreegerbils (07/27/2014) [-]
It's not even an anecdote, it's a current event. It happened just last week.

Meanwhile you're spouting off with no sources.
#226 - billburr (07/28/2014) [-]
First off it is an anecdote, secondly I did reply with a source.
An anecdote is like an example. Anecdotes are very persuasive but as I said they can usually be found for both sides and therefore don't count as evidence, certainly not sufficient evidence for such a testable claim.
What I gave was a statistic showing how people who carry guns are more likely to be shot.
User avatar #227 - twofreegerbils (07/28/2014) [-]
Even just owning a gun increases the likelihood that you will be shot by a remarkable amount.
This is not a statistic.

#69 - billburr (07/27/2014) [-]
I'm not trying to say you're dumb or anything, just trying to give some reasoning for why I think you're wrong. What you said wasn't completely unreasonable, I just don't think its true
I'm paraphrasing but there's a quote that goes like this "If everyone had a gun when they were inclined to use it nobody would be alive"
I understand that a person has to pull the trigger, but having a gun makes you more likely to kill someone or get killed yourself
User avatar #70 - shreddednation (07/27/2014) [-]
I understand that but I've been getting so much flak for a half-arsed comment and it's pretty damn annoying.
I get a notification whenever I get a comment so I've been getting a message every time somebody chooses to hound me a bit more causing me to have to check even though I know it's not going to be anything good.

User avatar #61 - sugarveins (07/27/2014) [-]
Carrying guns in a bank is a federal offense. Like, u.less you are a security guard it is illegal for you to have it on the property. Conceal or open is still illegal.
User avatar #182 - skypatrol (07/27/2014) [-]
Actually it's not a federal offense, it varies state to state. I open carried my gun into banks in Texas, Nevada, a few up in the northeast... There's no Federal law
User avatar #202 - sugarveins (07/28/2014) [-]
Then about four ccw instructors lied to me. Oh well, I still carry my H&K knife everywhere I go.
#223 - anonymous (07/28/2014) [-]
Yeah, you can carry in banks. Usually not concealed, but if its open, and you don't look like a bum then they'll let you go about your own business
User avatar #224 - sugarveins (07/28/2014) [-]
I once wore a stay calm and carry guns shirt promoting my boyfriends business and the tellers just looked terrified.
User avatar #64 - shreddednation (07/27/2014) [-]
I was using a bank as an example...
Oh goodness me, people didn't notice it was example?
Does nobody read fucking spoilers anymore?!
#65 - sugarveins (07/27/2014) [-]
your example was a bad one because all banks have it posted.

a store would have been a better example because it is usually up to management or the owners.
User avatar #66 - shreddednation (07/27/2014) [-]
I get that but I can't edit my comment, now can I? And deleting it would make me look like some stupid asshole that can't take it when people comment negatively. I rarely ever delete a comment I make for that purpose. Not saying I fuck up a lot but I fuck up sometimes and if there's a reply to it, I try not to delete said comment because of said reasons.
#59 - angelusprimus (07/27/2014) [-]
Ok this means CLIENTS don't have guns. That does not mean there isn't a shotgun in manager's office and manager isn't a PTSD Iraq vet who put that sign on because he has to fight an urge to shoot armed people.
#60 - shreddednation (07/27/2014) [-]
woah, hey there sir. I was just expressing a thought. Anyway, what's the chances of the manager being a fucking scumblord that would sell his own mother so he wouldn't be shot in the leg?
Exploring what ifs here is going to take too long so I'm just going to sit here, with a thought mind you, and make the assumption that Chuck Norris is probably in every bank and the whole place is trapped with AP mines and that it'd be fucking impossible instead of using logic to conduct a hypothesis.
#62 - angelusprimus (07/27/2014) [-]
No, I am actually talking about actual places.
There is now quite a few places that do not allow people with weapons in premises, because of open carry idiots. Because people with AK-47s slung over shoulders disturb customers and affect sales.
that does not mean those stores are not armed. At all. It just means they don't want armed customers walking around fucking up their profit margins.
User avatar #54 - herecomesjohnny (07/27/2014) [-]
yeah and same reasoning goes for egyptian booby traps, but that doesn't mean a bank without egyptian booby traps is easy to rob
User avatar #55 - shreddednation (07/27/2014) [-]
It would obviously never be easy, but it's easier. That's the point I was trying to get across. Because if you isolate everything that could be negative and get rid of one it just makes it easier that all. Robbing a place is never a cakewalk.

It's in the first arc when we see him first crying after he killed the Count. Hardly edgy. More like he didn't want to get to close to people because demons would follow him and they'd eventually get killed by them too.

not just, guy almost pleasantly tortures that first demon and the count. It may be some escapism coping mechanism, sure, but that's still acting edgy
User avatar #1001784 - kotor (07/27/2014) [-]
you mean you wouldn't torture a demon after you know they've literally killed all your best friends, raped your loved one, ate your arm, impregnated your girlfriend and to top it all, now they're following him trying to kill him? Yeah, I'm sure it's not justified. It's edgy, sure, but not in a bad meaning.
User avatar #1001786 - herecomesjohnny (07/27/2014) [-]
i didn't say it wasn't justified, but still edgy especially when you read the manga without even knowing the backstory.

Thanks, but I'm hoping my art speaks for itself. I'm pretty much screwed if they ask me anything about modernism or impressionism. I know next to nothing about theory and history.
#2543 to #2542 - herecomesjohnny (07/14/2014) [-]
isn't impressionism just a revolution against academism which was just naked people in photography style? In any case, try mentioning Courbet and _L'Origine du Monde. (french schools are really into art stuff, i don't get it)

but good luck, make a sexay kukuru and it'll go fine
