I lived in Beijing at the french school, it was very nice actually, though I mostly grew up among other expatriates in an above average milieu, not the most authentic china. I also lived in Shanghai and Qingdao which were both great to grow up in, especially being a teenager in Shanghai (where xbox games are 10 yuan and you can literally drink in a bar without ID checking), whereas qingdao is fun to grow up near the sea and all.

Some of China's most pretty stuff is in Harbin though where I went for a holiday, a beautiful place that becomes full of ice sculptures and snow sculptures and it's fucking mesmerizing once you're there, though it's so cold the camera batteries actually empty up in half a day because of the temperature.

I like China a lot, some of the best times of my life were there, it's not the USSR like some of fj makes it out to be, most of the daily oppression is just bloggers getting censored (the autocracy still goes to insane lengths of course).

I think what might shock most westerners is the difference between the urban and rural ways of life.

I just hope they stop before the part they're at in the manga.
It's pretty interesting, fun and action-packed.
But the pacing gets really bad later on and the story is kinda annoying.
