Right. I do favor older games, since that's what I grew up with.

I'd like to add that it isn't necessarily the technology by itself. It's just that you can't take the general ideas of older games and just straight up slap them onto modern games. 2D doesn't always directly translate well into 3D. You have to make changes to have it "fit" with modern gameplay elements. Dark Souls doesn't always do that, so it makes the game a tad on the cheap side sometimes.

Then you have to consider the difficulty compared to other current games. Dark Souls isn't that hard at all when compared to something like Ghouls N Ghosts, but it is difficult when compared to something like Skyrim. You have a large amount of younger people transitioning to Dark Souls from other games similar to Skyrim. They didn't grow up with difficult games like Zelda II, so they assume that Dark Souls is the pinnacle of difficulty and spout their git guds everywhere once they figure out how to not suck at it. Sure, Dark Souls is difficult compared to its contemporaries, but had it been released in the 80s or early 90s, it would have just been a game of normal difficulty.

Easily.

Zelda 1, Zelda II which is a favorite of mine , most early Castlevania games before the series became "metroidvanias" , Turrican, Metroid, Super Metroid to an extent the addition of the map makes it a fair bit easier than Metroid , most Contra games especially the superior arcade versions , any main series Mega Man game up through 7 excluding the majority of the X series though, in my opinion , Ghosts N Goblins, Ghouls N Ghosts especially the SNES version and the arcade version even more so , Ninja Gaiden, Battletoads, TMNT on the NES, Top Gun, Double Dragon, Silver Surfer although this one isn't fair in my opinion , Rygar no save system is what makes this one hard , Blaster Master once again, no save system here , Gauntlet another favorite here, play Hammerwatch if you want a similar "modern" game , Punch Out either the Mike Tyson or Mr Dream versions , Bionic Commando, all of the SNES Super Star Wars games, SNES Battletoads much easier than the NES game though , The Lion King SNES or Genesis versions , any of the Shining Force games while not incredibly hard, they game get pretty tough , Shining in the Darkness, most Metal Slug games, etc.

Should I keep going? The best part is that most of those games had no real reward. It was just "Congration. You done it. Now try a harder version of the same game."

Oh I wasn't doubting your ability to name them, just wondering what you have in mind. I see your point, and agree that the difficulty may be off sometimes. However I'd like to argue that it's not that different from what the games were like before - in the older games, when you encountered something new, you had to learn the patterns and adjust to them accordingly, if you died, you would just do it again, gradually getting better at memorizing the patterns and adjusting your actions towards them. The difficulty in newer games is just different due to additional factors - like 3 dimensions and a wider range of AI responses change the game more than we would think. There are more areas for our enemies to hide that way, whereas it wasn't very possible in 2d era, and our patterns may not be executed as flawlessly as before.

In short, the idea of game difficulty in these games is not as different, it's the technology that makes it seem weird and unfair.

Why you hating on Dan Bull?
#2 to #1 - hejlate ONLINE (11/05/2013) [-]
Just don't see him as that good of the artist, his lyrics are not that "pumping" and his voice seems very monotonous to me, from what I've heard his songs are very similar because of that. Basically his music is just not my cup of tea and I disagreed with the statement that he deserves much more recognition as a youtube musician. Sorry if my opinion has offended you and I can thumb back up if you'd like me to.

I'll have to disagree, but then again I've never been that picky about my music. I just listen to what I like without thinking much about the details. Dan just impress me as a person and I like almost all of his song. I'm curious about the similar comment. As far as I can remember his songs are pretty diverse, lots of different stuff.
No need to worry about the thumbs, they are a way to express a opinion. It just struck me as some random hate when you didn't leave a comment.
