I'll admit that we only get part of the story here. I'm not saying him hitting close to home is okay either, even though it was an argument.
But the point is, there's very little that compares to "One of your own parents didn't think you were worth it." It's like saying "you were never good enough for your own creator." My Nephew's Dad walked out before he was even born, and my sister dreads the idea of even bringing him up around my nephew for fear that her son will take it to heart like that. I myself went through fear of being disowned by my Father because of his strong religious background. The issue of parental rejection is something I know full well what kind of pain it can cause, and there are very few things he could have said, even things that do hit close to home, that would have actually been worse than that. And if he did, I have my doubts the situation would have played out like it did, nor would he have admitted defeat there and then even post about it.

I guess I have had this attitude about this sort of thing I've never really explored the logic behind, but I'll compare it to something I have, which is violence.
I hate violence and never practice it, but I'm a huge proponent of a person's right to defend himself, at any costs, against aggression. Whenever someone kills someone else in self-defense and the (IMO) idiots come out of the woodwork preaching restraint in hindsight, my opinion always boils down to "once you attack someone with intent to cause serious physical harm, you lose all rights to safety" and basically all bets are off and no amount of defense is excessive at that point.
I guess I feel the same way about verbal conflict, where if -- and that's a big if because we don't know what the guy said even though he himself admits it was out of line -- if the guy said something below the belt and knew it ti be so, then at that point he doesn't really deserve the decency of not having his dad brought up to him. Like, he lost the right to that emotional/verbal safety when he said whatever he said. So I guess in my opinion, what's out of bounds is relative to what verbal assault you're facing down to begin with.
You could make the argument that she probably contributed to the argument getting that bad in the first place and that's a good argument, but at worse they should both be ashamed of themselves, and no one should be focusing on what she said without also condemning what he said.

Because I took the picture with my phone it's wiped out a lot of the detail, shading and contrast which has bummed me out but thanks for the advice. I actually have (I don't know what it's really called) a stick, a bit like a paintbrush with rubber on the end to smudge and blend the charcoal precisely
