this is what I got got from my research:

Harassment and GamerGate
In December 2013, while attempting to publish Depression Quest, Quinn reported that she became the target of harassment, both online and through sexually explicit phone calls.[3][5][6][7] Shortly after the game was released on Steam, in August 2014,[4] Quinn's ex-boyfriend published a post on his blog accusing Quinn of infidelity.[8][9][10] After the posting, Quinn was targeted by a widespread campaign of harassment and abuse[11][1][9] including publication of sensitive personal information online and hacking of her Tumblr account by someone claiming to be from "/v/", a gaming forum on the 4chan website,[12][11] events which formed the genesis of the video game controversy GamerGate which eventually influenced both the wider video game culture and discussions on the sociology of the Internet with regards to feminism.[13][1][14] Part of the controversy centered on a dispute she had with the group The Fine Young Capitalists over its women in video games project.[15]

According to The New Yorker, during the #GamerGate controversy, doxxing-related harassment escalated to the point where Quinn no longer felt safe at home.[1] In a blog post on Cracked.com she described her experience being harassed as "a ceaseless barrage of random people sending you disgusting shit" that caused her insomnia and nightmares, and how it "felt like it was the entire world" even though she understood it was "a small minority of the angry and disenfranchised". [16]

i think its because we can feel how an animator thinks through his art.
happy tree friends was made with a sick love for the characters.

but this feels as though it was created in sheer spite and genuine wish to harm.
