Oh good Lord that's dumb. Alright 1. You failed to address every other point that I made, so you're only tackling like one piece of the pie here. And poorly at that. The Chiefs rushed for 150 yards that game. Charles being out was completely irrelevant because the running game averaged 5 yards a cary without him, which was roughly his season average up to that point. Flowers was also an awful CB last year. You may want to refer to the fact that the chiefs released him after the season. So he did nothing. And it wasn't both pass rushers that went down, it was only Houston that did, and it wasn't even until later in the second half when the Colts were already making their comeback. I don't know why you chose that one specific game to try and derail my entire enveloping point, but your knowledge and recollection of football is remarkably terrible.

ok then

1. I never said all 3 was necessary, but it helps significantly more than a passing game. The total defense is the top priority and GB had that. The saints didn't have a great defense and probably is the only outlier.

2. Eli carried that offense? no... They beat the patriots scoring 21 and 17 points, that was all defense.

The colts also had a good defense which is why Peyton can throw 7 picks in the playoffs and still win a SB.

Keep in mind, the third most important thing is a SMART QB. Someone who won't throw picks and make mistakes. Rodgers, Peyton, Brees, and Ben all qualify.

Alright then let's go through some rankings.

This year, 3 of the top 5 defenses in yards allowed/game are not playing games right now.
Last year, 2 of the top 5 lost the first game.
2012, 2 didn't make the playoffs, 1 lost the first game.
2011, 1 didn't make, another lost the first game

This year, 3 of the top 5 teams in yards/carry did not make the playoffs
Last year, every one of them either didn't make the playoffs (2) or lost the first game (3)
2012, 1 didn't make, 2 lost in the first game.
2011, 4 of them didn't make

Now, this year 4 of the top 4 teams in yards/pass attempt are still playing football games.
Last year, 2 of those teams were in the Super Bowl (that wasn't the case for any of the other things), and the other won a playoff game.
2012, 2 teams won a playoff game, another lost to one of those teams (again, not the case in anything else)
2011, we again had the Super Bowl contenders play each other, we again had one team lose their first game to another top 5 team, and then there was Detroit.

To say that those teams won solely because of the passing game or that the other teams lost solely because they were good at defense or running the ball is extraordinarily dumb. But there really should be zero debate that unless you are playing with Seattle's defense with Marshawn Lynch as your running back, a combination we probably won't see much after they're gone, you need an elite quarterback to get through the playoffs. I can't stand it when people try and go against the grain for no other reason than to go against the grain or because they found one particular example that they think is indicative of some huge trend. That's not how it works.

I'd say Defense, a QB that can make plays reliably, then running game, then an honestly good QB.

Look at Bengals this season. Games where Dalton just shows up they're fine, if he just shits his pants every play it doesn't matter about their running game. (Although in their blowout w/ Colts they barely ran the ball for some reason)
#39058 - ishotthedeputy (01/04/2015) [-]
The Packers and Saints both won Super Bowls with almost the exact opposite of that. Neither Brandon Jacobs nor Ahmad Bradshaw average even 4 yds/carry in 2012. Eli carried that offense, and only 6 regular season games ended with opponents even scoring less than 20 points. 2007 Colts were basically the opposite of what you said. I couldn't even tell you what shitty running back played for the 08 Steelers. These were literally the first SB champs I clicked on, and I'm sure there's countless other teams that did well in the playoffs without that formula. Hell, the Chiefs last year had defense and RB first with a game manager at QB and got knocked out in the wild card. Just because the last two champs followed that path doesn't make it a trend at all. It's just a stupid recency bias people (you) will use to try and be innovative.
User avatar #39060 - hawaiianhappysauce (01/04/2015) [-]
The chiefs were knocked out because the ENTIRE defense got injured. You saw a team that was clearly going to win until Flowers went down, both pass rushers went down, THE STARTING RB went down in 6 mins, the OTHER RB went down during the game. The only reason the colts caught up was because the Chiefs had like 10 injuries in the defense / runningbacks. Even their backup RB was ripping the Colts a new one.

stfu every game you pick the patriots getting blown out and they always when its fucking annoying as hell and im pretty sure the saints, packers, patriots and steelers have one superbowls without both a good defense or rb unless u count sproles as a rb when he was basically a receiver/runningback
User avatar #39059 - hawaiianhappysauce (01/04/2015) [-]
As for the argument on the SB wins by your select teams:

New England defense in 2001, 2003, 2004 in points awarded per game was 17 (6th), 14.9 (1st), 16.2 (9th). Patriots had Corey Dillon and/or Kevin Faulk as Rbs. They also had a smart QB in tom brady who didn't throw 49 TDs in a season like Peyton did, but Peyton lost the AFC game of divisional round anyway.

Pitt Defense in both wins 2005: 16.1 points per game and 2008: 13.9 points per game

Packers when they won gave 15 points per game (2nd in the nfl behind Pittsburgh who also went to the SB)

Colts won the SB with 3 TD passes and 7 interceptions by Peyton, but the defense held and the running game won them the games.

On the other hand. The undefeated patriots gave up the 5th most yards per rush. The giants won with a superior running defense and pressure.

Last year Denver had no running game, just passed the whole season, they had no secondary (allowed Patriots to make a 24 point comeback) they had a mediocre running defense, and to top it off they had a weak schedule. Vs a Seattle defense that was 7th against the run, 1st in passing, 1st in points allowed, and 4th in rushing offense given their division opponents also being rushing defense juggernauts. Denver didn't stand a chance.
User avatar #39055 - hawaiianhappysauce (01/04/2015) [-]
Further more, Ravens with the advantage of defense and running game will beat the Patriots

the same will happen if Seattle plays Carolina because Seattle is basically Carolina but better in all phases.

Dallas and Detroit is a push since Dallas has the running game and a smarter QB, but Detroit has a better defense. That could be interesting, but Dallas wouldn't stand a chance against GB who is good at everything (defense, running, QB).

I think the Colts should lose because they have NO running game. I think their RB got injured? Bengals have found a running game with Jeremy hill and Bernard. The bengals defense is better and their QB is about the same as Luck because both are inconsistent. I would bet on the Bengals.

The ravens beat Patriots because of what I said before.

Denver would beat Bengals or colts, wont matter (I don't think Peyton will throw 4 picks again). They can run the ball, stop the run, effective pass defense, and smarter QB. Overall Denver is better.

So now we have GB vs Seattle, that might be interesting, but seattle is just too good. So I pick Seattle to win the SB. I also pick Denver to beat the Ravens.

Finally I pick Seattle to beat Denver 36 - 6.
User avatar #39053 - hawaiianhappysauce (01/04/2015) [-]
And to further prove my point about the importance of Defense + running game:

Steelers lose bell and are basically forced to pass and become one dimensional and get their asses kicked at home. Their defense was also garbage.

Ravens have Forsett running, one of the best rushing defenses, and a secondary that played better because they knew they could drop back linebackers since they knew Pitt wasn't running the ball. Big Ben is a little better than Flacco, but the gap isn't far enough to justify an advantage (someone like Rodgers would).

Then you have ARZ losing to Panthers:

Panthers had Stewart + Newton running - Arizona lost Ellington
Panthers had a starting QB - Arizona didn't
Panthers and Arizona both had good defenses, but still, Panthers have the advantage in 2/3 of the categories.

That's not even the concern.

For one, he's got a lot of drama that goes on around him and we don't need another Vince Young.

For another, QB is not the big worry for the Titans. Our defense is awful, our O-Line is equally terrible, our receiving core is shaky and our running game needs a lot more development. I say we stick with Mettenberger for another year over drafting someone else at the position.
