Not necessarily. It should be fine. It is a lower wattage version of the 4590, but it isn't that much weaker than my 4690k at stock speeds.

He should have indeed gone with a better CPU, at least one that could be overclocked. Skyrim is old but it still needs a good CPU (poor optimization). Since the game runs only on a single core, he could have a Titan X and still not be able to get decent stable framerates.

To answer his question, yes, he still can probably use these mods, but he shouldn't expect a rock-solid 60 fps.

Skyrim uses two cores, actually, but no more than that.

Supposedly it does, but it does such a crappy job at handling multiple cores (core 0 gets 90% workload while core 1 only gets like 5% in my tests with an i5 4690k @ 4.4 GHz) that it barely matters.

There's only so much they could do with such an old engine. Splitting certain functions into multiple threads would have likely been more trouble that it was worth. Even enabling the multithread ini options adds nothing to performance and just leads to more CTDs.

Which is exactly the reason they needed a better one. They had the time and money to optimize it the way the did for Fallout 4. Bethesda just REALLY wanted to release the game on 11.11.11. They screwed many PC gamers this way, a $2,000 PC running the game just as "good" as a $800 one.

Indeed it is, but it runs a hell of a lot better on my personal rig than Skyrim does! And I can run Oblivion just as good as I can Skyrim, so that was pretty much the kick in the balls from Bethesda for me.

Bethesda just really needs a new engine.

Weird. With my previous build, Fallout 4 ran worse on low/medium than Skyrim did on Ultra, even with god rays disabled completely.

But yeah, a new engine would be nice, They can duct tape and staple Gamebryo as much as they want, but it's showing age for sure. It's weird though. I don't know how they can get away with claiming Creation to be a new engine when 1) it's obviously just a slightly updated Gamebryo and 2) Gamebryo doesn't even belong to them.

I can "max out" Fallout 4 and keep a steady FPS on my R9 380 4g (god rays low, shadows medium). I' m mostly 60fps, but in places like diamond city it sometimes drops to 50. The worst I have had is in one of my largest Spectacle Island settlements where I was going down to 25 when looking at my power armor hangar.

I seems the game behaves the way t wants to on every system. I've seen people complaining that their 970s drop to 20 fps when looking at walls, and I've never experienced that with one of the test benches. What I DO get, however, and it annoys the hell out of me, is texture corruption on my personal 380. Some support "engineer" told me my brand spanking new GPU was dying, and to get an RMA. I did no such thing seeing as to how F4 is literally the only game where this happens!

That's roughly what I'm running right now with a 4690K and a 280x. Slightly lower settings with an FX6300 and the same GPU would average between 30-50. A stable frame rate it was not. And before that, I was running a 7850 xfire, and since the game doesn't even fucking take advantage of a second GPU, it averaged around 30.

I have noticed drops in the most random places though. Most recently was at the Suffolk County school the one with the pink paste near the bottom of the map. I got drops down to the mid 30s in the big room with the hole leading to the lower floor. There isn't even anything major going on on screen.

But anyway, if you want to squeeze a few more frames out, look into getting faster RAM. Moving to 2400MHz from 1600MHz can net up to around 15% more.

Most games do not benefit from faster RAM. If you are running an APU build (like I was, before upgrading. My system was originally built around an A10 7850K) then fast memory is a must. I currently have 8GBs of 2133Mhz memory (Kingston Hyper X Fury OC)

I see, I did not know that! It does mention that it helps in situations where the CPU is not that great, so I can see this helping out a lot of people. Thank you for letting me know! I'm surprised I never learned of this from Digital Foundry, they're one of the channels I tend to view on a daily basis.
