Well thing is, at the level of the construction worker were not really allowed to just do or not do something because it makes sense, or is better or something. We are given the blueprints, and we build. When something comes out wrong its not our fault, its the fucking engineers fault. Believe me, weve tried reaching out to the engineers and they dont want to hear it. You dont know how many times weve had to remove a set of stairs because the engineers wouldnt fucking listen.

Just last week, we were doing fabrication drawings for a new recording studio, and the architect had royally fucked things up by drawing parts of the structure that just didn't make sense. We checked it and it was failing allover because he had missed some really important beams. He'd also sent the drawings to the fabricator and they were trying to work things out without consulting us. The fabricator ended up cutting some of the piles too short and rather than wasting a fucktonne of metal, it was up to us to re-work the whole building to accommodate. We have to put up with shit from all sides too sometimes.

That's the thing. Most engineers go to school for years, but never step foot on the job site, and have no real experience with what is going on, just what is on paper. And because of this they think they are always right.

That's why even as an engineering student myself, I find it fucking stupid when other people in the program try to pass themselves off as being something awesome just for being in engineering.

Most engineers are just intellectual dumbasses.

I would much rather our foreman talk to the company that wants the building built than have to go by engineers blueprints. There are ALWAYS issues that need to be corrected that are genuinely not engineers fault, but thats when they fuck up. Something fucked up so its back to the drawing board, and since they think everything they did was ok (even if it was) they freak out and rush to get a solution made. Weve had to reposition one set of stairs twelve fucking times before because the company changed their mind and wanted it closer to the entrance, and the engineers kept rushing their prints and giving us the wrong measurements.

I build multi-million dollar log homes with my father, most of which are originally designed on a napkin in the local coffee shop during the initial visit.
Yeah, I'll draw up some cheat sheets for the log tag requirements but there have been some jobs where we go from an initial meeting, to a down payment, to having the log walls, floor joists, and beams up in two weeks with no engineer. It takes about 2 weeks for the concrete foundation to cure enough to build on so we cut out the log package in that time.
On a house in Manitoba, the homeowner changed her mind (a lot) and wanted a 12/12 roof (*rise over run*, a 90 degree peak) instead of an 8/12. We found a sound dead aspen on the property and used it for the main post to raise the entire peak by five feet. An engineer would have had a meltdown.
2 years ago a homeowner had engineered prints drawn up, the retard put a log stair set into a roof line, tried to overspan a 10" log purlon by over 27 feet, and designed the deck roof two feet away from the building with no support structure.
Of course we ignored his plans other than to laugh at them. At the end of the 4 months (finished to lock-up) he walked in and said "yep, this is exactly what I had in mind"... The fucking stairs alone were on the other side of the house and turned 90 degrees!

TL;DR - Engineers don't know shit if it isn't written in a book.
